Disney tries for SEAL trademark

The Walt Disney Co. has applied for a trademark on the name “SEAL Team 6,” the name of the unit of specially trained Navy SEALs that killed Osama bin Laden in a raid in Pakistan this month.

Three applications filed May 3 – the day after the raid – with the U.S. Patent and Trademark office by Disney Enterprises Inc. state an intention to use the mark for a range of products, including entertainment and education services, clothing, toys, games and Christmas stockings.

Companies have tried to trademark combat-related terms before. A day after U.S. allied forces entered Iraq in 2003, Sony Corp. applied to trademark the war’s catchphrase, “shock and awe,” for use as the title of a video game. The application was later abandoned.

Not so fast, Mickey: the Navy has decided it wants the trademark rights on the use of the term "Team 6" and is has picked a fight with Disney, by filing counter applications with the patent office.

Something tells me the mouse is going to lose this one.

Thanks for the link. Best quote in the story:

“Maybe they want to come out with an amusement park ride and the Navy’s not in that business, so there really isn’t a conflict there,” he said. “If Disney decides they’re going to invade countries, then there might be an issue.”

I wouldn't want to mess with these guys... Disney might want to back out gracefully :scared1:

5 am this morning.

MSNBC reports Disney has indeed backed out.

They got some STINGING commentary about the original decision.

I'll miss the new DVC resort!!! ;)
