Walt Disney World is planning to shut down its high-end California Grill restaurant for six months or more, to allow for an extensive renovation of the restaurant atop the resort's Contemporary Resort hotel.

Disney said last week that the restaurant will close Jan. 6 and reopen in "late summer 2013."

The company provided few details of what the renovation will entail, though it said it will be "tweaking" the menu, which features California fusion cooking and sushi, and ranges in price from $36 a plate to $60 a plate. It also plans improvements to the restaurant's "onstage kitchen."

Disney says the restaurant will keep its two private dining rooms, an important feature at the Contemporary, which is one of Disney's largest convention and group-meeting hotels.

The California Grill makeover has been timed to coincide with other construction at the Contemporary, including a new roof and renovations of the hotel's 14th-floor suites. Disney once planned to convert those rooms into "health-and-wellness"-themed suites but has since dropped the concept.

They are very lucky that I have chosen to cruise the Med with Disney next May rather than go to WDW LOL

Cali Grill was one of the best signatures we ate in,the Sushi was amazing, even the kids loved it.Suppose that means we'll have to go back then :goodvibes

Totally opposite for us, we ate there once and said never again, maybe we will after the refurb.

Awwww what a shame!

I've eaten here 28 times at the last count and a couple of the servers know me by name LOL it just ticks so many boxes for me and I've only had one bad server in that time and one not so great meal but otherwise CG and I have been life long friends.

Cinderfella and I are in disagreement about our upcoming trip because I want to do it.... ofcourse!.... but because we booked this trip so close to travelling the only availablity is at 5.30 or 9.30 Typically if I travel on my own 9.30 is my preferred time to eat here solo but not so much for the DH so right now we're not eating here unless we see a cancellation. Luckily I am back in November so I shall be going then before the refurb!

We probably had the same server:rotfl:

I think the main problem was it was our first Signature restaurant ever, we had such high expectations thinking it was going to be the best dining experience ever. I am not one for dressing up but at least 2 men next to me in shorts, OK I now know you can but I didn't expect it.
We usually dine at 7pm ish, couldn't get a res til 9:30pm so we were very hungry. Took 2 hours to serve us 2 courses even though we asked for food ASAP, told them we wouldn't take time out for the fireworks as we wanted to eat, he just wasn't bothered.
Sat under an aircon unit, far too cold.
Eaten about 60 meals onsite, CG was the smallest portions of any we have had. Not even the best steak, we had better at Le Cellier(when 1 credit)
So from start to finish a massive dissapoinment, our 2nd experience of a signature was Yachtsman, totally the opposite, nicer surroundings, atmosphere, service, & food, CG just didn't do it for us.

This was my meal, they are not giant potatoes (all 3 halves of them) or giant green beens, it really was the smallest steak I have ever had.

Compared to Yachtsman which was one of the best steaks I have ever eaten.
