Disney to eliminate plastic straws, hotel in-room plastics and plastic shopping bags

I’ll humbly accept your self-righteous label. I strongly believe in protecting our environment, and I guess I do judge all these excuses for why one must have a straw on vacation as entitled and quite frankly uneducated when there are suitable alternatives.
Hey I said give me a reasonable alternative only about a hundred times now and said a paper straw is more than reasonable but just because I said they need to offer a suitable alternative I was judged for my opinion. What I don't think is reasonable is to tell people to bring their own throw away or reusable plastic straws. In fact I don't see how telling people to bring plastic into the parks is reasonable at all if we are trying to cut down on plastic.

I have no idea what Sea World switched to. Haven't been since 2014. Do you know?
No, which is why I asked.
I have friends at Universal right now who say they're still using straws. They definitely were when I was there 2 months ago. Sea World is apparently using paper straws.
Are Universal's straws still plastic (making the Orlando Sentinel incorrect)? Or are they paper?
SeaWorld, based on the bolded segment, apparently eliminated plastic straws and replaced them with paper? Why does anyone think Disney will cease straws completely? It makes absolute sense that they, too, will replace plastic straws with (probably) paper.

As ive pointed out that would be what i would consider a reasonable alternative but just because my opinion includes that they need to offer alternatives my agreeing with changes gets overlooked.

Guess I just try to live in moderation as much as possible without being overly zealous one way or another. And, to me, not having straws & lids as a way of trying to appear eco-friendly is over zealous. We are talking about a theme park. If they significantly increase the amount of things that are reusable at WDW, wouldn’t that then probably just significantly increase the water & likeky electricity consumed?? Not to mention the electricity & water consumed already just to operate a theme park. So, yeah, I think it’s a little hypocritical to say the use of straws & plastic bags are where we draw the line. But, it’s ok to waste those other valuable resources for our entertainment.

I just read today that the top 4 ocean plastic polluters were Asian countries. I think it was China, Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Am I the only person who regularly drinks iced drinks without a straw?
I love ice and always add lots to my drinks. It never occurred to me in my 45 years if drinking them that I need a straw when drinking, and I've never used them at home (where the ice machine barely keeps up with me and DS in summer) and have asked wait staff not to waste them on me going back at least 20 years.

Those if you posting you need a straw if there is ice, can you explain why?

Mine is due to extreme teeth sensitivity. I never drink a beverage with ice without a straw. I don’t use straws at home but never put ice in my beverage. I’m the type to melt ice cream in the microwave just a sec before eating if it’s not soft serve b/c that causes sensitivity too. I know a lot of ppl that have this similar issue so suspect that’s the issue for many who seem to care.

Ice hurts my teeth. I hate super cold drinks.
I prefer no ice at all but anytime I'm not somewhere that is self serve and I ask for no ice I end up with it anyways.
I like room temp or just a little chilled. I even prefer things like wine room temp.
About the only drink I prefer cold is milk. When it's too warm it gets a funny taste.
And in case someone is worried about my dental health you need not be. I get a cleaning and check up every 6 months and have not had a cavity in 18 years. I've tried sensidine toothpaste and it does nothing for me plus I like a more fresh taste than it offers.

Hah I thought I was the only one to let hard ice cream melt a little before digging in.

Sounds like Disney should just do away with ice and then the straw controversy would solve itself. :tink:

And that bottle can be recycled whereas the straw cannot, so cool, you’re opting for the more environmentally friendly choice now. :thumbsup2
Ok really do you not understand that if another form of straw is provided that those of us that require one will be more than happy to use it?

Thank you both for answering. I'm still rather confused. Does moving through the straw actually significantly warm the beverage?
Or do you mean the ice physically hits your teeth? I find that odd. At most, when lots of ice remains in a glass with little beversge and I tip it way back, ice hits my lips, but not teeth.
I'm beginning to wonder if growing up using straws all the time affects how one learns to sip from a glass? I am trying to imagine keeping my mouth open enough to have ice hitting my teeth and it seems like it would be very unnatural.

The straws allow liquid to come into the mouth farther back. Drinking directly from the glass usually causes some of the drink to wash over/behind the teeth.
