Disney to eliminate plastic straws, hotel in-room plastics and plastic shopping bags

I don't think a refillable shampoo dispenser is going to be anywhere near as gross as the t.v. remote in any hotel room. At least with the dispenser there's soap involved.
I travel with clorox wipes for the remote and every other gunky thing i'm going to touch in the hotel room. Disposable gloves and clorox wipes are a must. Plus to me it's not the outside of the shampoo dispenser that freaks me out it's the potential for what could be put inside.

Oh man! I can still taste that tiny cup of vanilla ice cream that came with the wooden ice cream spoon. It was a very rare treat and we savored every last lick.
I remember Dixie cup ice cream that came with the little wood spoon and I used to suck on it long after the ice cream was gone. I've done that with popsicles too. I'm not sure why I'm addicted to the taste and texture of wood lol.

I wonder though, if these dispensers are going to cost Disney more in soap in the long run. We've seen "tips" by people who split one apple 5 ways for 5 people to have a snack. And then there's the Ramein noodles and whatnot cooked in the coffee pots. I can foresee some people draining all the shampoo & conditioner out of the dispensers to take home. :rolleyes1

Yep. They can fill up countless empty travel size bottles from the pump dispenser and take them home. It will happen.

Maybe they will install the dispensers that can only be opened with a key? Or have the type of dispensers that are refilled by inserting plastic bags of liquid soap with a nozzle attached to the bottom of the bag. Easier for mousekeeping to change out and the nozzle won't get all gunked up. It would also be easy to see if someone tried to open up the bag, tape it shut or if it's leaking from a needle prick.

Here's a stainless steel one with a heavy duty key lock. Solves the problem of people getting in to steal the bags of shampoo or to tamper with them.

I have already bought my steel straws because I need to use a straw and paper straws won’t work. I will also miss the plastic shopping bags because they are the perfect size to use as trash bags, so now we will have to start buying trash bags.

I've seen those public dispensers in gas station bathrooms & places where the bottoms, where the soap comes out gets all gunked up and MOLDY. :scared: So, the sanitized soap passes though the moldy opening and the mold can possibly be passed onto the soap. :crazy2:

If Disney housekeeping keeps those dispensers clean, fine. But, if they use the same rags that they used around toilets and other non-sanitary places to wipe off the bottom nozzles, they might not end up very clean. :crazy2:

For goodness sakes. I've stayed in probably a dozen hotels with theses kinds of dispensers this year alone, I've never seen a moldy one.
TBH, we have them at home too, we bought and mounted some about 4 months ago. They're not in the least bit difficult to clean. Anywhere that does a good job cleaning otherwise should be able to handle them without issue.
A gross gas station that has got mold in the soap probably also has disgusting toilets I wouldn't want to use.

My point is they need to offer reasonable alternatives like paper straws, paper bags, and paper cups.
Yes I said need. I'm not an entitled guest I'm just trying to get a reasonable alternative to plastic.
Like another poster suggested how about cutting down on plastic silverware too by using sporks.
They want to go green yet Ziploc who will sponsor Splash Mountain is going to hand out baggies? Seems like they dont care since they aren't paying for that plastic waste.

Why do the NEED to offer alternatives??????? If what they offer doesn't work, why doesn't the guest NEED to bring in what works for them (as long as it is allowed in the parks)? With a few exceptions a plastic straw is not a need. Good grief.

Again, they can't go completely green all at once. Maybe this year it will be straws and bags, next year it will be all sporks. Love to see anyone go completely green in their house all at once. Multiply that by a million and that may be what it would take to do the same at a theme park. The whole they can't do everything at once so why bother attitude is silly. Small changes help.

I feel like you are overlooking that k am all for change but they have not announced any alternative for the straws. No straws at at all is not reasonable in my opinion. I didnt say plastic straws are a need just that alternatives are in my opinion.
Also I'm not expecting them to go green all at once but how about they not add something plastic st the same time they are trying to take it away.
Again these are all just my opinions. I never sId people must agree with me just that I should be allowed to have my opinions without someone quoting me every 5 minutes just to try to make me feel like my opinions are wrong because it does not match their own.
You want to give me your view that's fine but don't judge mine in the process.

Why do most people over the age of 3 need a straw? That's a want. With a few exceptions. When my kids were small, I traveled with sippy cups...so that problem is solved without Disney doing it for me. And, if I'm an adult who NEEDS (medical reasons for example) or even just "wants" to use a straw, there are reusable ones that even come in handy carry bags. Get those. It's not up to Disney to solve this problem. Because I can absolutely drink my beverages without a straw.

Yes, I'm often made to feel guilty for asking for plastic bags at Trader Joe's instead of paper. But, I re-use them for trash. There is some trash that is just soppy & drippy. Paper bags will NOT work. I even mentioned that once to a cashier and HE said he also uses plastic bags for trash. So WHY the guilt trip for choosing plastic over paper?

As has been said multiple times, by others as well as me, that it is NOT your opinion that anyone has a problem with. It's your phrasing: "they better," "they need to," etc. It comes across as rather demanding.

I don't like guilt trips, either, but the environmental concern is that most people don't reuse plastic bags like you do, they just toss them.

Actually, most dentists will tell you that drinking soda or juice (or anything with sugar or acidity) with a straw is better for your teeth because it limits the amount of fluid that comes into contact with your teeth. Otherwise, they are washed in the full force of each drink. This can be detrimental over time.

Have they said for sure they are not going to give out plastic bags in the parks? I really don't think that will go over well. I think people will buy less stuff and that would never be tolerated.

Even if it's only a dollar or whatever for one of the reusable bags. I have so many of those they're sitting inside another bag in my attic right now. I suppose eventually those will end up in a landfill too.

If it's that much of a concern to Trader Joe's, then don't make it a choice. Just like Disney, just make a switch, in Trader Joe's case to all paper bags. But since they are giving us a choice, then make it a real CHOICE. Not the frowny faces when we choose plastic. Or when we choose paper the, "YAY! for choosing paper!" which I have gotten both of. Hence, the guilt trip. :headache:

Yes, that happened in the 80's when recycling first was done. I don't seen people pulling those bags out to finally use. I think they went in the landfills. The problem was that once they get really soiled, they were hard or next to impossible to wash to reuse. So they just piled up in homes, unused. That's why the trend went BACK to plastic bags.

There ARE some biodegradable plastic bags out now. They are pretty much only used for doggy poop bags right now, as once they get wet, they degrade too quickly. And they are too fragile. They tear too easily. Once scientists figure out how to make plastic bags to be strong enough and last long enough to hold some wet stuff long enough carry some stuff for a while and to make it to the landfill before degrading, that will solve a lot of our plastic bags & straws problem. I have faith in our scientists. :thumbsup2 I just hope it's in OUR lifetime. :upsidedow

At various times, I have asked for plastic and paper, and brought my own bags to TJs. Nobody has ever cared one way or another, and I've shopped at TJs in three different states in two different areas of the country. Maybe yours just has oversealous cashiers? Like I said, I wouldn't like that, either.
