Disney Store Manager

I have been there, done that. The disney store at my local mall closed a couple of months ago--from one day to the next. Retail sales are down right now across the board. It can be a tough business. And your hours are not set in stone and you have to flexible to meet the needs of the business.:

You have hit the nail on the head. I work PT for my local TDS and if sales are low, which they have been in recent weeks, your hours will get cut. However if sales are up and if you are not scheduled, you may get a call from your manager asking if you want more hours that day. The schedule is based on how well the store does in sales and if the store isn't doing well that week then you may see very minimal hours, or in my case last week I didn't see any hours. I was scheduled 2 days and had both of my days cut. With that said, I love my job and am very happy with how flexible my store is because since I am not the sole bread winner in the family, I have to work around my DH's schedule, and they understand that, but on the flip side I am very flexible with them because I do not raise a stink if they have to cut my hours, of if they call me and ask if I could come in and my DH can stay home with the kids, I always tell them to give me 5 minutes and I will be there.

I give so much credit to all of you who work in retail! I grew up with parents who both worked retail management full time (talk about having a hard time on holidays!) and it was a huge motivation for me to go to college and get my masters. Quite honestly, I felt (and still feel!) that I did not have what it took to do what they do! It takes a lot to work in retail long term. I did it while I got myself through school, but I don't think I could have sold cell phones for one day longer than necessary. Nothing like people coming in and being mad that their Blackberry is too expensive at 5 AM on black friday :rotfl: I much prefer being in my library!

The only thing I don't quite get is the degree requirements. I know most places want a 4 year degree, but don't care what it's in usually. How does a four year degree in something really random (ex. music like mine is in) make me a better candidate for retail management? I've always been really curious about this.

I did four years in retail back in the Jamesway days. I don't miss it at all! Long hours, hard work, minimal pay, the occasional boss that was a real idiot, the more frequent coworker that was a real idiot, and the daily customer that was a real idiot, and I had it good. For most of my four years, I had a regular Monday through Friday work week, 5:30 am - 2:00 pm. Still, I don't ever want to go back to retail again.

I really think this varies from retailer to retailer.
