Disney should institute price breaks for health care workers like they do for the military

Maybe she need to look at where she lives. Teachers in our area are paid very well. They start right out of college at about $50K, quickly moving into the 60s. The majority of teachers in the 2 districts that cover our town make over $80K & many make well over $100K. That means they make as much as or more than most nurses. Without working the nights, weekends & holidays, including Christmas, that nurses are. Teachers in our area can afford a Disney vacation just as easily as anyone else can.
Wow, in our state the starting salary is maybe $40K!! Where are you?? Well, never mind—she can google salaries by state. Of course, I’d rather she stay close to home.......🙄 But you never know who they’ll meet in college, marry, and move to who knows where......hey look, something to cry about besides this virus! Thanks!!! 😝

I’m not with you. They are making a very good income often with over time pay. They chose the profession. So many are out of work and going to lose many things. These nice folks will continue on earning lots of money. I would rather see them pay into charity to help people so effected by this get back on their feet financially.
I’m not saying they need discounts, but my sister & all the others (an ER nurse) did not sign up to do a dangerous job without proper PPE. She could quit, but she feels a duty to help.

I’m a Professional firefighter medic. 25 years now Ohio. Here teachers. Police, fire and other civil servants along with nurses and doctors make imho a great income compared to cost of living. I can easily do a Disney vacation every other year. And I’m a single( divorced ) dad with shared parenting.
I’m also a veteran . I do appreciate Disney’s offers to me due to that. But I wouldn’t expect it just for being. Fireman. I always felt my military service was more important than anything I did after. That’s just me.
And as for PPE. Here in Ohio. We are well taken care of. Screw this virus. I want to goto WDW or Disneyland. NOW.

I’m an essential worker. I am not in healthcare. I am personally tired of seeing all of these other essential fields say they are on the front lines. I’m not and they’re not either.

Unless you’re in healthcare and specifically working patients with COVID then you’re not on the front lines.

We went into it to care for others. We have a right to expect proper equipment and supports to do our jobs. Discounts won’t do us much good if we’re sick or worse. And really, it’s about the last thing on my mind right now.

I told my daughter about this thread and she pretty much said the same thing. They are now down to ONE mask for an ENTIRE WEEK!!! Now I can worry even more. Yesterday she and a co-worker searched the hospital for wipes to clean their equipment and were thrilled to find a couple canisters. They can't even get sanitizing wipes in a hospital to try and help prevent the spread so units are hiding what little they have.

She had to break the news to a patient she was positive and try to convince her that she could be OK as she was telling her the steps that would take place before she is intubated. No family is allowed to visit so my daughter was all she had to calm her fears. Then she had to argue with another patient, who is also terrified and lashing out, that they are doing everything they can.

One mask a week for her to use to treat 50+ COVID positive patients on her unit alone. I am so proud of her but so terrified for her. She knew she would be treating sick people when she went to school and got this job. She did not know she would be struggling to save patients without the proper equipment to protect herself from this horrible disease and yet she goes in every shift ready to risk her life.

Thank you for whatever you do also.

I am so sorry. Praying she stays safe.

My BIL was a marine for 18 years. Yes, the pay is crappy, but they got free housing, free medical for the whole family, and a commissary on base that sold food and clothes at a reduced price. Plus he got a free education that when he got out of the military, was able to get a job at a good company for good pay. That counts for something.
almost free, they pay taxes on the money they get for housing and such. Also not all military housing is created equal. Mold is a huge issue in the barrack. And the housing at Ft Polk was very hit or miss. So yes there are some benefits, but there is a lot they give up. (mom of a Soldier, aunt to an Airman and friend to many different branches. All that to say, the military benefit should remain just for military.

But how would they tell who worked the front line and who worked in a doctor's office that never saw any "action" One of my friends is an RN but her dr is only doing phone appt and then sending to urgent care if they need more then Tylenol.
What about grocery store clerks who have no masks, unless they buy the masks themselves?
Agreed. I work in a state with low covid admissions. We’ve been at 50% capacity for a month. It’s been the easiest month of my career. I certainly don’t deserve anything.
I think theres going to be plenty of discounts coming when the economy collapses anyway.

Because that grocery store clerk, or truck driver, or gas station attendant, isn't going to be the one you call or see if you get this virus.
Grocery store clerk is surrounded by people and can't get away from them.

How about Lowes? On the local news last night showing Home Depot with a distancing line waiting to go into the store while right next door Lowes is slammed with their "Spring Black Friday" ad. No hand sanitizer or time to wash hands. Busier and the customers are nastier than ever.

It's one thing to have chosen a career that may expose you to stuff during a pandemic shutdown, but when a place of business stays open with sales and the people flock to it because it's the only place open...

And get minimal wages and little to no respect for their efforts.

Do you really think it’s going to stay that way?

BAH and BAS (basic allowance for housing and basic allowance for subsistence) is not taxed. Not quite sure why you state otherwise. And agreed, enlisted get paid crap, but officers do more than alright for themselves. Especially upon retirement.

Yes my sister is an ER nurse. She said the same thing. 1 mask per week. It’s supposed to be one mask per patient contact! Outrageous!

Curious what state?

I'm a nurse. But I've found grocery store workers, truck drivers, sanitation employees and teachers are just as important at keeping things normal. Add to that the restaurants, gyms and yoga studios, retailers and many others who are adjusting and trying to stay afloat to keep things normal for themselves, their employees, their families and their local economies.

I can only hope that those people who don't think certain jobs are meant to have a living wage will realize the importance of everyone.

I'm aware of two different practices going on in Michigan with regard to sterilizing masks in order to resuse them. One was developed at Michigan State University where they are using heat and effectively baking the masks and then packaging them for three days before returning them to a Lansing area hospital. A hospital system in the metro Detroit area has announced they've come up with another method that enables a mask to be used 3 times.

Hopefully every little bit helps protect a few more people.
