Disney Riviera Resort

Disney doesn't seem to do a lot actual up market amenities well...or I'm just spoiled. Being able to walk to a park(s) is compelling though. I'm not going to even suggest that staying in the CR Atrium isn't cool. Grew up doing it as a kid, and still think seeing the monorail go through the hotel is super cool...
Agreed! Monorails right outside your window are pretty darned cool, too! I'd pay extra for this and views of MK and fireworks any day.

can someone maybe answer this for me its something I have wondered for a long time: what makes a resort DVC? are only DVC members allowed to book there?

Woah...we at going basic here, aren't we?

Anyone have a sticky for this one?
I know this is basic, but as a 20 something who has never even come close to making enough for a DVC membership, I don't actually know very much about it, other than I want it.

I can answer the 2nd question easily- no. You can stay in a DVC resort/room on a regular (cash) reservation. It's actually not a bad idea to do this if you are considering a purchase.

For the first question, I will agree with @lockedoutlogic and say that there has to be a sticky or other thread that goes over that in detail...

Thank you...that's what I was looking for.

Thanks everyone! This helped! Im glad you don't have to be DVC to stay because this is definitely one I am going to want to check out in the future if the price is good! (let's hope for Old Key West value lol)

I don't know much about DVC either but I don't like what I see so far. It's just too convoluted and I'm biased because it has too much affect on regular onsite visitors. At least I think so.

This notion of turning CBR into a deluxe is really something else. I've stayed there and it is far from a deluxe in many ways. They'd have to start over.

I understand. We were ignorant of DVC;
I assumed that you had to be super rich to own DVC!

When we honeymooned @ the BWI,
they were selling the BW Villas.
I had NO interest in stopping @ any of the sales kiosks!

In 2008, still ignorant about DVC, and assuming the minimum buy-in was prohibitive(except for the rich, lol),

I got tired of seeing the DVC kiosks every time we were @ Epcot.
First words out of my mouth to the Epco DVC kiosk guide:

What does it cost to get in?!
Like $40,000?!?!

For a fraction of that we became DVC Owners :)

This notion of turning CBR into a deluxe is really something else. I've stayed there and it is far from a deluxe in many ways. They'd have to start over.

They are starting over with the DVC portion, maybe CBR as well. Asking top dollar would require a brand new resort as others have posted.

To the "target" DVC buyer - one that knows nothing of historical pricing, resale market, etc. and is blinded by the pixie dust sprinkled on them from the DVC salesman, it may as well be a brand new resort.

Some of us have concluded demand will be there (so its obvious they should build it), I'm not worried about pricing on this one or the next. I only buy what I want and can afford. Others can worry about pricing if they want.

If it sells they are giving guests what they want. Adding more options for me is a good thing, I hope they keep adding.

My worry is not lack of demand. It's selling crap at high price and then doubling down on the next one and the next one.

I think there are 2 main reasons to be concerned about the project.

#1 For DVC owners, could cheapen your points if you already bought in at >$150/PP. You will probably be a little more tied to your home resort, since you might have CBR Villa Riviera folks who paid $180/pp breathing down your neck to trade into another resort. And it wont work the other way. How many BLTers would be pining at staying here? How many VGFers wanna give that up for a chance at surreying around Jamaica?

#2 For us "regular folk", could make mods >$50-$75 per night more expensive, same with values.

Or, perhaps the brigade is right.

It will drive up values for DVC, and the "regular folk" will be more than happy to pay more since they will get to rub shoulders with DVCers at their mod now.

I don't know... if they do this at all "right", I think they'll attract people who like the resort itself and are jazzed about the gondola access to two parks. This is decidedly NOT an SSR situation IMO.

I say this as an SSR owner since 2006 who has NEVER stayed at SSR since I bought. :)

How many BLTers would be pining at staying here?

As a BLT owner, too... "pining" is strong, but if gondola access proves to be VERY EFFICIENT AND PLEASANT, we would certainly try booking it once to check it out.

I'm not kidding when I say that I think A LOT DEPENDS ON HOW GOOD THIS GONDOLA SYSTEM PROVES TO BE.

Count me as not concerned at all. Just more options.

Many of us (including LOL) have concluded "lack of demand" will not be an issue.

Could easily see a split stay with BLT and Riviera.

SSR will at least get spread a bit further-always a good thing.

Agreed-it will drive up our investments.

You are probably right, in that in the first year or so, these scenarios will definitely play out.

But in year #'s 5, 6, 7, 8?

That's where the problematic scenarios could play out.

Time to dump your 401K and start buying up DVC contracts.

You heard it here first....

IF the gondola system stinks, and IF they have insufficient amenities at DRR.

I don't think the gondola system will stink (unless there is no AC, then it literally will).

But will it be better than walking to EPCOT?

What about to MK? The gondola wont be going there (maybe it will one day?).

And you can gondola back to POP. It's not some exclusive perk.

I guess the value of the gondola is more than I'm giving it.

I just don't get it. But apparently people are willing to buy a DVC with a themed pool and a gondola. Good for WDW's bottom line.

But I still have concerns that a shared gondola with POP will be enough to keep people booking there down the road.

I won't know til I'm 40, but initially I'm extremely skeptical.

On the bright side, if my concerns turn out to be valid, people will be scooping up more $40-50 pp resale contracts.....

Both those things are guaranteed to happen from the seats up here on the bridge...
