Disney Resort/Universal Resort transportation question

We are going July 2014. (I know its a long way off to be thinking about such details!)

We are flying into Orlando and taking DME to the Boardwalk where we will stay for 5 nights. We are a family of 5, 3 kids ages 8-10-13. We will be travelling with another family of 4, kids 10 and 13. At this point our itinerary will most likely be the same.

We will then head to the Hard Rock at Universal for two nights.

We need to figure out the best way to get from Disney to Universal. We are also going to need to get from Universal back to the airport.

Price is an issue, but so is convenience. I don't want to be on a shuttle that will stop anywhere else for others.

We plan on going in the middle of the day, which means we can't use that special Universal ticket that includes transportation, because the website said it can't be done between 10 and 3.

Renting a car is tough with a large group. And then we would pay for parking, and also to have the car for three days when we would only use it for transfer from Disney and to airport.

Suggestions? We also don't mind splitting up for the rides.

Take a taxi! There will be plenty available at the BW to take you to the Hard Rock. Bell services can even get you a mini van taxi or a large van taxi then you can all go in the same car & split the fare.

We went from AKL to US IOA and the cab ride was less than $40. Well worth it IMHO.

Then you won't have to worry about parking fees. I'm sure getting a taxi from the Hard Rock to the airport won't be a problem, but it'll probably be a little expensive.

First of all, you wouldn't have been able to use the Mears shuttle since they don't allow luggage on the buses. You can bring backpacks but not actual luggage.
I would either get a cab from WDW to US/IoA and then another cab from US/IoA back to MCO, or just book a car service. I prefer the car service..it's there when you want and it's a nice way to go. Both those options will cost about the same.

The absolute easiest way is to just go to the cab stand at Boardwalk and ask for a van to Universal. The bellhop will call a van and they will be there in a moment--they wait in the parking lot. A 10-person van is a flat rate of $70 to Universal (or at least it was last December). We have done this many times. You can do the same thing for a ride to the airport, although I don't know the exact cost.
