I'm trying to decide between to places, one off-site and one on-site and before I made my decision I wanted to know....Can off site guests make priority dinner reservations for disney resorts and can they visit disney property (ie the boardwalk area or Fort Wilderness campground) without an on-site reservation. Thanks in advance to all of you veterans

Yes, ANYONE can make a PS for a meal at any Disney restaurant, and anyone can go to the Boardwalk. Not sure about Fort Wilderness but I don't see why you wouldn't be able to visit the grounds to look around.

As to getting into a resort from off-site, it depends on how you travel--if you use Disney's transports (busses, boats, monorail) there is no problem going to a resort (except AKL had and may still have a rule that only AKL guests and those with reservations at the restaurants can enter--even other WDW guests were blocked out). You can use Disney's transports as long as you have any multiday pass ticket (hoppers included). If you are driving, you will not be able to get into a resort unless you have a reservation for something at the resort; the exception is Boardwalk where all you need to be doing is going to the boardwalk in the evening.

Yes, you can make PS reservations whether you're staying onsite or not. And yes, you can visit the Boardwalk in the evenings too. You can also go to the Hoop-dee-doo dinner show at Fort Wilderness - just park your car in the main parking lot and take an internal bus to Pioneer Hall.

But, it is much more convenient (and fun!) to stay on-site! The transportation system is wonderful! We park our car and we don't move it the entire trip!

And, it's wonderful to be totally immersed in the Disney magic! You don't get that same feeling when you go back to an off-site hotel. I would highly recommend staying onsite!
