disney pool hot tubs closing at 11pm fences

I don't get the slide issue? At least at BLT, when the lifeguards left at the end of the night last summer they put netting over the both kiddie and main slide end and locked the entrances.

You couldn't get on the slide unless you climbed into from the outside...and that's a whole other liability defense right there.

I heard that you will have to use MB to get in as well (probably KTTW as well of course). Interesting if they could program the various RFID readers to know which pools are off limits for hopping and specifically keep non-resort guests out, while still allowing others pool hopping privileges.

We used our MBs to enter the pools at the Art of Animation in November. Some guests couldn't figure it out as the scanner was off to the side. They will had their MBs in the boxes.

I agree with those that don't get the slide requirement. The child that drowned at POP was in a pool without a slide. It just seems like a minimal fix.

The pools at Pop Century are larger than the quiet pools at the other resorts. I'm betting that there must be some talk of requiring fencing for pools over a certain size, whether or not they have a slide.

Either way, this is a Disney Resorts policy, not a DVC policy, much like the smoking policy. It is not under DVC control.

Perhaps Florida is considering a law mandating that pools with slides be fenced at hotels? Or maybe pools of a certain size and larger? Just a guess.

And again, perhaps it is a requirement of the insurance companies.

I believe that Florida already has a requirement to fence pools. Disney may have been grandfathered in, but the drowning made them change their minds.

At the annual meeting today questions were raised pertaining to this. Yes, our maintenance fees are increasing to cover the expense of adding lifeguards to the feature pools until 11 pm. Feature pools will close at 11 pm. No decisions have been made to the fencing of pools and who will pay for that.

So for now, pool hours will be in place and we will just have to wait and see how they enforce it.

ohhh can't wait to hear mtg reports! and glad they were taking/answering questions

Can someone explain to me again why it is that a child might drown in the main pool, but not in the leisure pools? Is it that they are only at risk of drowning if there's a slide? Even if they have "Swim at your own risk" signs at the leisure pools, we were always taught that any good lawyer can prove those signs are meaningless. Sad to say, but kids can drown in either under the "right" (or wrong) circumstances.

I suspect it has to do with guest awareness.

Under the previous setup, the feature pools could be either staffed OR unstaffed. In many cases, I'm sure guests arrived at the pool while lifeguards were on duty and remained after the lifeguards had departed.

It then becomes a question of how effectively Disney communicated the lifeguard departure. Are posted signs enough? Are announcements enough? (What if I'm in the restroom? What if I'm getting something to eat at the nearby snack bar?)

The death of a child + sympathetic jury can be an expensive combination for Disney. Even with their cadre of legal experts.

With the new setup, there's a very clear delineation at all pools. Feature pools will always be supervised when open. Quiet pools are always swim-at-your-own-risk. Zero ambiguity.

What I don't understand is why they were reportedly installing a fence around Hidden Springs pool at WL, this is the quiet pool! They started doing some work on it back in October, I haven't seen it recently to see if they finished whatever they were working on.
