Jud -- What is in the tree at 9:42 in your video?
I returned to Harambe to uncover the facts about this mysterious tree that many have noted. The reason I took the picture in the first place was because our guide had stopped to speak about it, but I missed what she said.
It is a Kigelia Africanius, or African Sausage Tree. Hippos (I think it was hippos?) love the fruit, which is the hanging stuff. It is not agreeable to humans as food, but can be brewed into an 'adult beverage'.
I will also note that directly across the street from it is a 'baby' baobob' tree, a real one, for as some may know, the huge old ones out on the savanna are fakes, concrete replica's, as the real ones simply would not survive in Florida despite several attempts.
I also learned today on the regular safari (guess I wasn't paying attention before) that the purpose of the huge trunk on the baobob tree is to store all the water it will need for the year in the three months that it is available.
Also, how far apart are the largest spans (board to board) on those bridges? I have short legs and don't think I could get across some of those.
If you are tall enough to meet the minimum requirement, I am sure the spacing is workable- kids over 8 are allowed. I think it's 8... and there is a height requirement, though I think that is so kids aren't hanging from the safety line and having to be pushed across the bridge and doing the whole Peter Pan thing.
And there are nets that are quite secure- yes, I tested.
