Disney on broken legs?

The worst possible situation has arisen for my family and the family going with us. I play hockey with my best friend and his wife. This coming Saturday we're on a plane to WDW for the week. A week ago, in a game, I broke my left fibula. As crazy as it may be, this past Friday, my friends wife broke the exact same bone.

I'm a massive boot (fortunately no cast), but no weight bearing for 4-6 weeks minimum. We won't know her situation til she sees the ortho sometime this week, but her break will probably need a cast at minimum, if not possible surgery. Surgery rules her out of the trip entirely, obviously. If she gets the cast or boot, we think we can still go, but rent scooters.

Has anyone done Disney with a broken leg? Even if we get scooters, are we allowed to use crutches up to the ride itself? Do they hold our crutches? Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Depends on which attraction.

Many will allow a "transfer" with crutches. Some can't.

You might want to check with the airline to see if you can fly with a cast or boot. From an earlier thread, I seem to recall that airlines don't want you to fly with a cast because the air pressure can cause the limb to swell. As for being in the park and renting a scooter that will probably work, but you do run the risk of further injury from other guests. At least with a boot your leg won't be stretched out in front of you. If that were the case, I'd recommend not going because then you'd be quite likely to have your leg reinjured. You might also check with your orthopedic doctor to see what he recommends as far as taking a trip to Disney. He probably won't come right out and say no, but you might get a feeling from the way he says you can go.

Good luck with your broken leg no matter what you decide to do.

Thanks, DekrRini...

Doc said getting around shouldn't be a problem, but to avoid rollercoasters...the more intense ones like Rockin Roller coaster (my fav!) and Space Mountain. Anything that might require bracing the leg. I'm not too concerned about other guests, as I'll either be on the scooter or on a knee cart, but as my DD is only 7, I don't want her going alone obviously. I hate the thought of cancelling, but if that might be the best option, all things considered.

I went through 4 knee and foot surgeries over the span of two+ years. In that time we went on about a half dozen WDW trips with at least half of those being completely non weight bearing. I think the only rides I skipped was Space Mountain and any water rides. I was able to transfer from a scooter with my crutches to all other rides. Disney is amazing about helping you accommodate to this situation. Unfortunately many of the WDW guests aren't so helpful. Beware that getting around in extremely crowded areas can be a very daunting task. People will step out right in front of you expecting that you will be able to stop your scooter on a dime and that isn't the case.

Check out Disney's website for info on transferring onto rides and no matter what enjoy your trip!

Ah, perfect!!! Thank you RebelHawk!!!!!

Siskaren's advice is excellent. There is an abundance of info on that forum, including a FAQ sticky for guests with disabilities. Info includes offsite vendors for ecv rentals and accessibility info for just about any attraction.

Both of you need to get an okey dokey from your orthopod for both the flight and the parks. Crutches are no problem- the CMs will take them from you and will have them handy when you are ready to off load. Some of the rides will let you take them into the ride vehicle, but not all.

Getting bumped into by guests with absolutely no situational awareness whatsoever is a very real hazard. It can help to have a member of your group walk beside you, near your booted leg, to act as a physical buffer.

Good luck with your trip
