I don’t imagine the investors preview will be the forum for this moving forward. I think they had 2 very specific problems that doing this now solved:
1)
Disney+ is 1 year old and not only are the launch subscriptions rolling off, but the free Verizon ones are too. Meanwhile, Disney has been hard pressed to actually make any of the original content they wanted to have rolling out by now. So not very enticing to renew, right? What if I told you about EVERYTHING we’re coming out with, all at once, right when you have to decide?
2) Disney is beginning to be valued like a growth/tech company rather than a blue chip. Chapek obviously thought (or was convinced) that making a big show of how they’re beginning to think of themselves like a tech company too would pop the stock.
Looking at the market today, hard to argue with that. But he won’t get a huge pop next time - now this is the expectation. I would expect instead more traditional forums, even if they stick with the ‘huge drop of everything at once’ thing they’ve now done twice.
