Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2024 Edition

Thanks for the memories. Walt was the first celebrity whose death I mourned, having grown up watching him every Sunday night for ten years. I still miss him!
Funny, my mom just said nearly this exact same thing after I showed her @wabbott 's excerpt. She got a little teary eyed (the fact that we're currently at MK and just watched the flag retreat ceremony probably contributed to that)

1966: Thursday

Walter Elias Disney passes away at St. Joseph's Hospital of acute circulatory collapse (caused by lung cancer) just ten days after his 65th birthday.

When the news of Walt's death reaches Disneyland in Anaheim, consideration is given to closing the park for the day, but instead it is kept open (as Walt would have wanted), but the flags on Main Street USA are lowered to half-mast.

On the CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite, commentator Eric Sevareid states this about Mr. Disney: "He was a happy accident, one of the happiest this century has experienced. And judging by the way it’s behaving, in spite of all Disney tried to tell it about laughter, love, children, puppies, and sunrises, the century hardly deserved him."

That evening Disneyland's Fantasy on Parade (a special presentation for the holiday season) steps off for the first time. An unusually cold night for Anaheim, a somber Disneyland experiences a light snow.
I didn't know about the snow at Disneyland that night. Wow!

1952: WED Enterprises is founded as a private company owned solely by Walt Disney to design and create Disneyland and to manage Disney's personal assets. WED stands for Walter Elias Disney.

Already hard at work on the theme park project are Walt's first 3 Imagineers ... Harriet Burns, Fred Joerger and Wathel Rogers. (In 1986, WED will be renamed Walt Disney Imagineering.)

"Well, WED is, you might call it my backyard laboratory, my workshop away from work. It served a purpose in that some of the things I was planning, like Disneyland for
example… it’s pretty hard for banking minds to go with it… so I had to go ahead on my own and develop it to a point where they could begin to comprehend what I had on my mind." -Walt Disney

Yes it is. If a parent wants to discuss the topic with their child its up to them. Disney is about making money, not this

In the idealized world that I wish we lived in, I would want the media my kids consume to show all different types of people to help reduce bullying and exclusion and help everyone feel accepted. A talk with parents is one thing, and should happen, but as we learned from Glee and Will and Grace and many other forms of media, being represented makes a difference. But of course, you’re right that Disney is a business and will operate like one. I just agree with those that think it’s sad.

Also, I’m really glad that this conversation has remained fairly civil. 😊

The big difference is Glee and Will and Grace weren't shows for children.

Genuine question: what is it about kids seeing different kinds of people that concerns you? Are you worried that seeing a transgender kid will make a child want to change gender? Okay, I suppose kids might see a superhero on TV and want super powers so while it feels a bit like a stretch to me, I can see it. But even if that happens, why is “I want to prentend to be a girl” different than an “I want to pretend to be a ninja turtle”? Isn’t it all just kids being kids?

From my perspective, I see it as a way to increase acceptance and reduce bullying - particularly in schools.

For what it’s worth, I might mention that I was in elementary school when I was watching Will and Grace 😊. I loved the show, but it didn’t suddenly change who i might have a crush on or even make me want to dress up as them for Halloween for that matter. Before that I was watching Family Matters - it never made me wish I was black. Although who knows, maybe for some child, it did 😊
