Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

Surely this will continue into 2024 as well . . . right?! They can’t have a year and a half of the 50th anniversary and only 3 months of the 100th!
There is some Disney 100 already at the parks, so maybe that's "extending" the celebration as far as Disney is concerned. Sounds like December 31st, 2023 is the end though. Does seem odd, but even the 50th was a bit underwhelming due in no small part to Covid. Glad I will be going back before the end of the year to see more than what I just experienced in the last two weeks.

Do we think we'll still see The Hatbox Ghost and the Figment meet and greet this year? I really thought we'd be seeing them both by now.
Hat Box better be there before December or I’m going to have a melt down…lol They’re closing HM for three days in early August, so I’m thinking that’s the time he arrives.

We should have Figment by the beginning of November at the latest, since he’s the challenge host for the Wine & Dine race weekend and I can’t believe they wouldn’t have a character photo with him

The new fireworks is supposed to be a part of Epcot's 100th celebrations, but no mention of that in the blog

I would have thought that they would have included new fireworks because otherwise it feels a bit underwhelming. Maybe the fireworks will be a big announcement itself soon??

I saw the fireworks, dreamers point, comunicore will not open 9/22 and possibly not till early 2024

I've heard they have been testing different fireworks.... but in the end I assume there will be some structures returned to the lagoon for projections to be made on.

I'm wondering if they're waiting for Mickey and Minnie to move into CommunCore Hall, to free up the Imagination meet and greet space for Figment? That or they're finding a place in ImageWorks for him, but that might mean removing Vanellope or Joy?

New Jersey Dad Drove 17 Hours to Disney World After Wife and Kids Had Flight Canceled. Then, He Turned Around — Without Even Stepping Inside the Park.

By Richard Burkard
7/17/2023

Some people will do anything for a Disney experience. Knewz.com learned about one family which took an unexpected 17-hour drive.

Nathan Montanez simply planned to drive his wife and two children to an airport. He would stay home in New Jersey and work while they flew to Orlando to visit Walt Disney World.

But then came trouble. United Airlines canceled the flight 15 minutes before takeoff from Newark Liberty International Airport.

Wife Jill Tobin-Montanez tried to explain the worst to her children, since tickets on other flights to Orlando were unavailable for days.

But then came a surprise. Nathan Montanez messaged his wife, reporting he was back outside the airport. The family climbed into the car.

And then came a bigger surprise.

“He asked if we were ready to go. We said ‘yup,’” Tobin-Montanez told Good News Network. “Then he told us to get ready for a long drive.”

How long? From New Jersey to Orlando, with no overnight stops. The husband became a marathon man behind the wheel, driving more than 1,000 miles. He even had the song “On the Road Again” on radio.

Nathan Montanez dropped his family off in Florida past midnight, after a 17-hour drive. The wife and children didn’t miss a scheduled Disney day.

As for dad? He rested for a few hours, then drove back to New Jersey without them. He had to get back to work, but in the end, he only missed one day’s pay.

“Not many people in this world would do that,” his wife said. “The kids absolutely appreciate what he did for them.”

Tobin-Montanez went on to call her husband “our rock… wife to one amazing dad.”

Her Facebook posts are private, so Knewz is unable to report on how the trip to Walt Disney World went.

But that sort of loyalty to Disney seems to be lacking this summer in other travelers.

According to CBS News, attendance at Disney’s Hollywood Studios on Independence Day was the third-worst in the past 12 months.

Touring Plans, a company that watches amusement parks, found the average wait time at Walt Disney World on Tuesday, July 4 was 27 minutes. On the holiday in 2019, the wait was 47 minutes.

The Wall Street Journal noted attendance at theme parks in general is in a slump. For Walt Disney World, attendance on the long Independence Day weekend was the lightest in nearly 10 years.

While Disney did not comment on the numbers, several reasons could be offered for the decline.

Some people point to price hikes by Disney. A ticket to the Orlando parks now costs more than $100.

People with a political bent wonder if Disney is paying a price for taking on Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in the debate over gender identity laws.

There’s also a civil rights theory. The NAACP warned against any travel to Florida because of how minority groups are treated there.

I live in NJ. I know several people who have driven to Florida, rested a few hours and then turned around and came back home. Most to drop kids off to college, move kids into apartments, etc. I feel like it’s a normal New Jerseyan thing to do. Lol

Yeah, those happen all the time around here too, planned. But, this was a spur of the moment dad decision that would have been easy to chalk it up to a bad airline and kids be disappointed for a long time. Instead, he turned around and headed south. I hope United treats them fairly.

Disney Treasure Stern to Feature Captain Hook & Peter Pan

Disney Cruise Line has announced the characters that guests will be able to see on the stern of the upcoming Disney Treasure cruise ship. Here’s the announcement:

This Disney Treasure update is coming to you from sunny Celebration, Florida, the headquarters for Disney Cruise Line. Today, the Disney Cruise Line team is thrilled to be debuting an image of the ship’s stern for the very first time! For 25 years, each Disney Cruise Line ship has been adorned with characters from beloved Disney adventures. The Disney Treasure will follow this tradition with its own signature character sculptures that honor the ship’s motif of adventure, Peter Pan and Captain Hook. Harnessing the power of Tinker Bell’s pixie dust, Peter Pan will levitate next to the Disney Treasure to add the finishing touch to the ship’s stern filigree. Meanwhile, Peter Pan’s longtime rival, Captain Hook can be seen leaning out a porthole with a vengeful expression on his face. Paintbrush and paint bucket in hand, Peter Pan sports a mischievous grin as he glances back at Captain Hook, who is dripping in yellow paint.

Sounds like something a Texan would do. I mean, we have to ride our horse 3 hours to the nearest grocery store anyway🤣

I really like this, and cannot wait for more details about the Treasure. It feels like the Wish was like Fantasyland, and the Treasure will be like Adventureland. I'm just now imagining the Third Triton ship will be Frontierland or Critter Country themed lol 😂

I hope so too but I doubt it. I fly United a lot (probably more than any other airline) and their customer service is laughably bad.
