Disney News, Discussion & an Element of Fun - 2023 Edition

So happy the VIPassholder stuff is happening right on our trip! I just wish it started when we get there since we are hitting Epcot more heavily Sun - Tues while we're at YC but I'm still really excited that we will get to take advantage for the rest of the time. Shaping up to be a fantastic birthday trip.

Disney to Host Royal Ball for Wish Families During World Princess Week

Hear ye, hear ye! We’ve got some royal news to share here at Walt Disney World. During World Princess Week taking place Aug. 21-26, we’re hosting one of our biggest wish-granting events ever with “Once Upon A Wish Party” – a special event dreamed up just for wish families. This party will be a full day affair filled with enchanting surprises, inspiration and adventures fit for a hero or heroine.

There will be tea and treats, character meet and greets, and wish kids visiting from all across the country will be proclaimed royalty for the evening at a ball they’re sure to remember forever. So, where do all royal balls begin? With invitations, of course! Happening right now, wish granters and magic makers are working hand-in-hand to deliver magical invitations to our guests of honor.

Earlier this week, Minnie Mouse joined Disney cast members and the Make-A-Wish team at Ventura Elementary School in Florida to let 7-year-old Scarlett know her wish of having a “Disney Princess experience” was coming true – the very first wish kid to be invited to the event.

“She’s going to have this super special experience and be able to go to the royal ball as a princess … I know she’s going to enjoy every single second of it,” Scarlett’s mom said. “To see her happy and completely fulfilled is every mother’s dream. It means so much that she’ll be able to experience life as a normal kid at a theme park where we don’t have to think about a lot of the medical stuff that has consumed our lives in the past.”

A lifelong fan of Disney Princesses, Scarlett was surrounded by nearly 100 of her fellow first grade classmates and teachers when she heard the news. When she was just a baby, Scarlett’s family learned she would need a heart transplant. After undergoing many surgeries and a transplant at 18 months old, school was always a place of comfort for her after so much time in the hospital, so we worked with our friends at Make-A-Wish and in the community to make it happen right before school lets out for the summer. Talk about an unforgettable way to wrap up the year!

Make-A-Wish Reveal with Students

“Disney is the largest wish granter in the world, and over our more than 40-year relationship, we’ve granted some pretty incredible wishes together,” said Leslie Motter, Make-A-Wish America President and CEO. “Whatever Disney does, they go all out. I can’t wait to see the new happy memories Scarlett and our other attending wish families will be able to make at what is sure to be an unforgettable event.”

While this will be a first-of-its-kind wish event here at Walt Disney World, we know wishes have the transformative power to change lives. In fact, we recently celebrated the 150,000th Disney-inspired wish with 16-year-old Mikayla from Palm Beach Gardens, Florida who began her battle fighting cancer three years ago. As you may remember, we filled Mikayla’s day with some pretty suite surprises at Magic Kingdom which you can read all about here.

Singer Tina Turner Passes Away at 83

A representative said in a statement on Wednesday, “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ’n Roll’ has died peacefully today at the age of 83 after a long illness in her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland. With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model.”

Tina Turner has several connections to Disney. She sang “Easy as Life” with Angélique Kidjo for the original “Aida” concept album released in 1999.

Turner performed “Great Spirits” for “Brother Bear” (2003) and a pop version of “He Lives in You” for the compilation album “The Lion King Collection.” “Cruella” (2021) featured Turner’s cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love.”

Angela Bassett portrayed Turner in “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” a 1993 film by Touchstone Pictures, a now-defunct production label owned by Disney. The biographical film was based on Turner’s 1986 autobiography, “I, Tina: My Life Story,” and named after her hit song.

Turner also performed at the grand opening of Euro Disney (now Disneyland Paris).

Silver Anniversary at Sea Fireworks Won’t Happen on All Sailings

As part of Disney Cruise Line’s Silver Anniversary at Sea celebration this summer, guests are invited to partake in new offerings across the entire fleet of cruise ships. Guests can meet favorite Disney Characters dressed in new, shimmering outfits, enjoy festive décor, limited-time food and beverage, special merchandise, and more.

As a reminder, the 25th anniversary fireworks show will be featured on most4-night or longer sailings visiting The Bahamas, the Caribbean, and the Mediterranean this summer. Guests who have a cruise booked during the Silver Anniversary at Sea should keep an eye out on their email as DCL will be sending itineraries with more information about their sailing’s entertainment offerings. Guests sailing on Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings aboard the Disney Fantasy and Disney Magic will not receive Seamails from DCL.

Sailings receiving these Seamails will include:

  • 3-night Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings aboard the Disney Wish: The fireworks presentation during 3-night cruises will be the popular Pirate’s Night fireworks, weather permitting.
  • 4-Night Disney Wish Sailing Departing July 3: This sailing will feature two fireworks presentations, weather permitting. Instead of the 25th Anniversary-themed fireworks, this sailing will feature our July 4th fireworks and the popular Pirate’s Night fireworks.
  • 4-night Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings aboard the Disney Wish Departing June 12, June 26, July 24 and Aug. 7: The fireworks presentation on these sailings will be the popular Pirate’s Night fireworks, weather permitting. Due to the speed and location of the ship on the other evenings, DCL cannot present a second set of fireworks.
  • 4-night Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings aboard the Disney Dream Departing Aug. 26 and Aug. 30: The fireworks presentation on these sailings will be the Silver Anniversary Fireworks at Sea presentation, weather permitting. Due to the speed and location of the ship on the other evenings, DCL cannot present a second set of fireworks.
  • Alaska Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings aboard the Disney Wonder: Fireworks are not offered on Alaskan cruises. During Alaska sailings, Freezing the Night Away with Anna, Elsa, and Friends deck party will be presented instead of the pirate night fireworks and 25th anniversary fireworks.
  • Select Disney Dream Silver Anniversary at Sea Sailings: Due to the speed and location of the ship, fireworks are not offered on select European cruises.

Slightly annoying that this is mostly focused on locals. (Short Notice and just a month in duration). If you are going to say during “summer” make it all summer long. Grr

Universal is doing the same thing right now. I would love to go and get my universal magnet since we became passholders for the first time April of this year when we went down for spring break but they are only doing it only for this month. They will more than likely be out of the magnets when we go in August. Wish Disney and Universal offered a way to order a basic passholder magnet and have it shipped to our address.
