It was likely a combination of both, but I have read some articles that also claims the bad marketing was planned to make it fail.

Disney did the same with Treasure Planet and Atlantis, which were also adventure type movies rather than musicals.

Yes, this movie has a similar vibe to those two - I've been worried about how well it would do as these never seme to "hit" like they should. It's too bad though because it was a good movie.

I agree in terms of similarity. Treasure Planet actually released around this time (Thanksgiving weekend) but Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets was released the week before..............yeah I can see why it didn't do well at the time.

It's so weird that Disney isn't marketing this. In comparison, I'm seeing a lot of ads for Disenchanted and in terms of kids animated movies, I see ads for that Dreamworks Puss in Boots movie coming out next month.

The couple articles I read was linking it more to being LGBT and making it fail to say those they kind of movies won't do well so they don't do it again. They are 2 for 2 on them failing....might be saying something.

I seem to have seen a bunch of ads, but I pretty much only watch the Disney owned channels anyway - lots of FXX. Clearly though they didn't have much faith in it, which really stinks. Also, I don't think that the failure had anything to do with a certain character or anything - Black Panther has made $600M!

Atlantis is probably my favorite Disney movie! Treasure Planet is also good, but the sotry isn't quite as good - VERY beautiful animation though.

There is a big difference in a kids movie vs a movie marketed for adults though and pushing hot buttoms.

Wondering if Disney will decide to cancel their purchase of that partial completed ship in favor of just putting their money into the two remaining Wish class ships.

That said the movie was visually stunning and I wish I paid the $ to see it in 3D

It will be interesting to see what Disney does marketing wise going forward for Elemental, Wish & Elio as they are “original” Pixar/Disney IP or if due to this and Lightyear bombing by Disney standards they start just moving most animated features to streaming (inside out 2 will be theatrical though)

Unless the lack of ads is due to the major character, how can it be the 2nd? There's barely any ads, if it wasn't for this thread I wouldn't even know about the character being lgbtq+. If people don't even know about the movie they can't be turned off by a character and decide not to go.

Which I also must not have seen anywhere or remembered. I really don't think outside the Disney fan base as many people know about the character than we think. There's been basically no advertising for this unless you watch abc or some other Disney station. That should be the question. Why do they bother making movies just to not promote them? They've been doing it a lot lately which I think is a far bigger issue than one character.

Feel like recently, most films I'm theatres go to streaming a month after, like Encanto did last year. The only major film recently to not go to streaming so quickly is Far from Home. Maybe if things don't go to disney+ as fast, people will be more likely to go to the cinema to watch movies instead of just wait for it to come to Disney+
