Disney needs to go to Asia!!

So with Disneyland opening in Shanghai in spring 2016, Disney needs to do a cruise to Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Tokyo!! Not an impossibility.... Any takers?

I think they'd have to do a repo from the west coast to Tokyo. From there it's easy to set up some cruises between the 3 cities. Two weeks would be great for a cruise! Could start in Tokyo and end in Hong Kong and vice-versa.

As the crow flies, it's 5600 miles from Long Beach to Tokyo. Without making any stops at all, that would be about two weeks at sea. It's hard to imagine that very many cruise passengers would want 14 sea days in a row. And there just aren't very many islands between the North American West Coast and Tokyo that would be able to accommodate the ship the size of the Magic or Wonder unloading 3000 passengers and crew for a port call. As a comparison, Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas transferred from New York to Shanghai this spring. It took them 53 days, going across the Atlantic through the med down the Red Sea around the Indian Ocean and finally to shanghai.

Quantum is Currently running four and five night cruises that visit Shanghai, Naha Okinawa, southern Japan, and Busan South Korea.

I've never seen one of the Quantum class ships in person, but in pictures they look like giant floating boxes. I just don't have any interest in sailing on anything that big, I don't care how many extra amenities they offer.

A southern route to Australia does include some places were ships could stop during the transit. Princess also offers a three-week excursion from Tokyo to San Francisco which is essentially 10 sea days and cruising Alaska.

Until Disney has more than four ships, I just don't see the making a passage to Asia. However, A cruise including Los Angeles (with Disneyland), Tokyo (with Tokyo Disney ), Shanghai (with Shanghai Disneyland), and Hong Kong (Hong Kong Disneyland) would definitely have some takers!

At a CC reception last year, the topic of new ports was discussed by the captain. Bermuda (my choice) was definitely a no-go, but they did talk a lot about Asia and about how that was a growing market that was exciting. The also discussed that the ship would need to change due to their cultural differences. It was a several minute discussion and the longest on any port/area that was discussed. It seemed like they had really looked into the possibility. I expect once the Magic or Wonder get replaced, one of them will be refurbished and sent to Asia permanently. Another interesting tidbit...the DVC website is now available in Japanese. I expect that Asia will happen sooner than later.

Great idea to cruise with DCL in Asia. I hope they will do that soon !

Was there any discussion at all about Disney's lack of casinos? Quantum of the seas has actually expanded her casino space in response to demand in the Chinese market.

Would LOVE an Asia cruise. I remember the crew members talking about it as far back as 2011, though it really doesn't make sense until they can get a ship there on a pretty permanent basis. Could be some really great opportunities to partner with ABD and get people to the parks so all our money flows to Disney (mwhahahaha!).

Sorry this took so long.............I did not have any charts for this , so the figures are courtesy of the navigation staff of the Training Ship Empire State, presently in the Med on a 3 month cruise.

I asked for shortest route (Great Circle) and the distances will be approximate, as that there are no diversions for land mass and ship channels. No port calls. 504 NM per day at 21.0 knots, economical sea speed.

San Francisco to Hong Kong........6100NM.......12 days

Hong Kong to Shanghai.................825NM.....1.5 days

Shanghai to Tokyo.....................1100NM. ......2 days

Lots of possible port calls along the way
