Disney Infinity 3.0 for Dummies (or the mom who is supposed to order it)

We already have 2.0 for WII U. Do I have to buy the whole starter kit for 3.0 with the base and everything? Is there an upgrade option or something I don't know about?

We also have an XBox 360 (recently acquired used). Would that be a better system for the Infinity game?

Can they play the 2.0 characters on the 3.0 game?

Anybody have a suggestion on the best deal? Prefer to pre-order and have delivered rather than try to get to the store.

I feel like I am totally out of my league here and I need help!!

Get the 360 version. The characters and toybox figures will work. Not sure about the base, though. However, I think the xbox version will have a longer life span - I don't think they're making 3.0 for the WiiU?

The characters should be forward compatible 1.0 and 2.0 work with 3.0) but not backward compatible (3.0 will not work on 1.0 or 2.0). We have always gotten the starter pack but I wait until it is released to the stores since there is rarely good pricing when pre-ordering. I personally would get whichever version your child plays most with. DS has an XBox 360, XBox One and WiiU. He typically plays with his WiiU so I'll probably buying it for that.
