Disney in August

Two years ago, I went in the first week of September. I thought I was going to melt into the sidewalk. I was soooooo hot I wasn't sure I was going to survive a lot of days. It seems hotter in the parks too because of the asphalt and concrete ground.

I have a photo of me eating a Mickey Mouse Head rice crispy treat and my hair is plastered to my forehead and I have a towel around my neck. I look a mess. LOL

We were in between two hurricanes too and it was STILL hot!!!

I'll go back to going in Decembers.

We always go during the last 2 weeks of August. Typically that's when the resort discounts come out too. Free dining is already out for Aug. I think it starts the 19th.

So not only are the crowds less, the closer to the end of the month, but prices drop too! I notice a drop in crowd levels usually toward the last few days of our vacay, but the crowd level isn't bad when value season starts, usually the 3rd week of Aug. If you can tweek your dates I would.

We stay on site, and take a mid day break back to our resort for a swim, relax by the pool during the hottest part of the day. Then we go back to a EMH park at night, relaxed and refreshed.

The water parks are a fun way to beat the heat too.

I am hoping its not to hot, as we are going at the end of august. But then again will be use to the heat and humidity from the SW ontario summer.

Hi! We have typically travelled to WDW in January or March but due to the low cost, we went for two weeks last August. We camped at Fort Wilderness (which we love) but had no air conditioning so it was pretty tough and pretty horrible weather-wise. To keep your costs down it is worth it, but be prepared for the following:

It will rain at some point EVERY day. This is their weather pattern.

There will be a lightning storm EVERY day, typically around 4 p.m. when you get back to your hotel or site and want to go swimming. The pool will be closed any time there is any lightning. EVERY DAY this happened to us. If you think you will "outsmart the weather" and try to swim at noon- there will be a lighning storm at noon that day.

It will be so humid you may feel ill.

If you arrive at the parks after 11 a.m. you will be overwhelmed by the crowds. Always go at opening time.

You MUST book dining reservations ahead. There is NOTHING last minute for sit-down rstaurants.

On the VERY positive note...

It is cheaper, so you can stay longer.

The Florida kids are already back in school the third week of August.

Many of the Southern States are already back in school.

If you get to the park at opening time you can whip on and off 10 - 12 rides before leaving at noon. (Our first week Aug 15 - 22 was MUCH busier than our second week Aug 22-29)

If you have air conditioning in your accommodation you will be fine for sleeping. I do not recommend camping without it again!


It's Disney- you can suffer almost anything if you plan your time wisely.

I agree with all your points - we had similar experiences with our August 2007 trip. But due to the heat and humidity, DW refuses to go back when it's so hot again - "when Momma ain't happy.... ain't no one happy". Our preferred time of year is now April/May.

Yes it was hot and humid - but that gave us more excuses to go to the water parks.

The heat and humidity will drain you of energy (don't kid yourself)....get there early, drink lots of water, leave mid afternoon, head back in the evenings......take the advise from those who have experienced August weather !

On my latest Aug trip, it actually only rained on 2 days out of our 8 days there! I was really surprised! But the humidity was definitely still there.

It does typically rain briefly around 3ish, but showers are isolated, and short. It could rain in Epcot, but not MK. In Aug 2009 we had some afternoons our resort main pool was closed due to anticipated thunder storms in the area, but weren't there however we could use the quiet pools. Of course we wouldn't use the pool if we saw or heard any thunder/lightening. They have to close the main pools and will open them again after the storm has left the area, even if it never came near the resort.

normally, the middle part of august will be hot and humid. the crowds will be huge. Can't tell you if the heat and humidity are tough to take, it depends on your family.be prepared. Enjoy.

I went in the last 2 weeks of August a few times. I got caught in Hurricane Frances in 2004 (right after hurricane Charley). However, because of those hurricanes, the parks were literally dead. I walked on every single ride, and was able to stay on ToT 4 times in a row without having to get off.

The weather otherwise was great! Hot, humid, but not that bad (although, I am someone who loves the sun!). I think the earlier part of August will be busier as most kids aren't back in school yet. The last week of August was truthfully the best week that I've ever been there! I have more pictures with characters from those 2 vacations than probably the rest of my trips combined.

We love going in August. Been there 3 times in last 5 years during August.
We don't have to take the DS's out of school.
Crowds at the park are lower - especialll last week of August.
Cheap. In 2009 we stayed at POP for 14 nights for $2,700.
The heat was a great excuse to go to the water parks.

Seriously though, it is SO hot in August, yet we keep going

Yes it is hot. Reality is that the temp means that an August trip isn't for everybody. If you want to spend all day - rope drop to when they kick you out - in the park - pick a time of the year that is cooler. We go out for approx. 3 hours in the morning. Go back to the resort for the worst of the afternoon and have a swim/nap. Head back out after the afternoon t-storm.

Plan accordingly and you will be fine. Lots of water. Lots of stop into A/C cooled areas. A few frozen drinks. All good.
