Disney Fantasy -- Mechanical Problems

I saw what looked like the harbor escort boat lined up and waiting a few minutes before 5:00, then he left again a few minutes after 5...

Just home from this cruise. Had a wonderful time. No complaints from us. We booked our next placeholder before all this happened. Enjoyed the $200 onboard credit and free drinks Friday along with an extra chance at Palo brunch. We will book a 20% sometime in the next year and no, there is no onboard credit with that. It does have to be used for a 3,4 or 7 day cruise. We were deck 9 mid ship and felt no extra bumpies except last night crossing the Gulf Stream about 2 am. There is NO WAY we could have gone to CC. It took us all day Thursday and Friday just to get to CC. We averaged 16 knots. Besides, the weather was not nice anyways. We think DCL did a great job keeping us all very happy and entertained. We never felt in any danger. Hopefully the next cruise will go out just fine!

The best part about this onboard offer is it applies to concierge cabins as well. 20% off- yay!!

Someone from an earlier post mentioned our late arrival. What I heard the captain saying is that we missing our arrival window and as such those ships arriving in time have priority to enter the port at their arrival time. We had to wait out turn.

That is correct, we arrived later than normal. Luggage was off late for those who choose to set it out the night before. We decided to keep ours because we had an early flight. We were allowed to leave at 8. Those who had luggage onboard were not allowed to disembark. Easiest check out ever for us! :drive:

Who's the captain?

Wow, is all I can say. The Fantasy had an event. :scared1:

I am sad and concerned for my favorite vessel. She is in need of care, and I am too far away to hug her, and assist in her restoration. :tilt:

Some rods, bearings, shafts and blades were likely stressed during the Hurricane Sandy event, that possibly finally failed. :duck:

We have missed CC prior and received nothing for compensation.

For DCL to offer 20% discounts and OBC for future sailings to these pax, something must have really gone wrong, besides missing CC.

Perhaps since it was NOT weather, DCL was kind enough to compensate.
Or, current prices are so high, they need to give out discounts aboard to get folks back. :lmao:

DCL ships miss CC all the time and receive no discounts on future sailings.

Interesting

I read more of this event, and perhaps that vibration in the aft may be repaired after all. :duck:

Some have always felt she had a bad prop from the get go. A prop slightlty out of balance. That also could have led to an event.

I was aboard during the Hurricane Sandy event, and I wouldn't discount this current event may be related.

The props and stern were out of the sea every other set of waves, ship running at 4 knots, winds above hurricane force, surface seas 10 m, rogue sets delivered every 20 minutes, at 18m, for 4 hours. Believe it or not. I was there. A Force 12 for a cruise ship. :crazy2: Unprecedented.

After that many more spoke of vibrations in the aft cabins, more than the Dream. :scratchin

Interesting

JMHO

A reminder to those aboard this sailing, often these discounts can be combined with the Onboard Booking Discount. So keep that in mind.

Most likely the waves and the props being out of the water did not cause any stress on the drive line. The reason is that the motors that turn the props are electric. Typically they have safeties on them so that if they do overspeed, the computer will catch it and automatically limit the revolutions. The diesels are constant speed gensets, and are not connected to the props in anyway shape or form. Any of the 5 gensets will put power in to a distribution box, that powers the ships. 1 genset will be dedicated to each drive motor, and the others will be started as needed. Its not uncommon for a ship to run on 3 gensets. Unless you knew what to look for, youd never know how many engines are running at any given time. I'm not doubting that the props were out of the water, and wouldn't be surprised if one of her props were out of balance. But I doubt that that event hurt the ship.

Still in port as of 5:45 pm. She has normally sailed by now.

I would assume if they were not going to sail they would not have boarded? On the other hand, no one has a hotel for the night. They could still leave in the middle of the night and have plenty of time to make the ports. They could leave tomorrow and make the ports.

They would have boarded people, based on estimates on how long it would take to fix the problem. As you say, even if they leave late, they still can make their ports. They have one at sea day for this cruise before the first port. Technically, even if she remains docked until tomorrow, the activities can still go on, just like it was a sea day.

Any significance to that door being open in the bow? That made me think they were getting ready for departure, but maybe I just didn't see it open before the lights came on.

I was wondering the same about the door. Pilot boat is out again. I hope they are able to sail away soon. We were on the SWDAS cruise that got back on the 30th. We almost didn't make Castaway Cay as the winds were so bad. Took a few tries and a few hours to get in. Lots of really bad vibration in our aft cabin, along with a verandah full of soot. I thought it was maybe "normal" for this ship but maybe not.

From the company's side it's obviously a manageable hit. The point is it's still a good deal of money and if the credit were extended based on passenger and not stateroom it would be an unmanageable hit.

Even if they had to refund everyone's fare it would still be manageable. Of course no company wants to not make money so they will only give you as little as they can but DCL or any cruise line for that matter won't go bankrupt if they refunded an entire ship.
