Can I tip our server with Disney dollars?
Will they be annoyed?
Thanks

I have no OFFICIAL info on this, just my opinion. I would be annoyed. It would be like being paid for my job in slips of paper that are only good at the company store and the company cafeteria. I could not buy clothes for my family and groceries at my company store...so getting the company credits would not work for me.

BUT...I could be wrong here....just my opinion.
:)

I agree, I woulld carry around cash to tip your servers. I think it's tacky to give Disney Dollars.

I agree!
Its like making you spend your money with Disney.
The money might be needed for gas, food etc .....
Sort of like the Disney Visa!
Rewards that are ONLY good with Disney ?????

But Disney Dollars can be exchanged for cash. It's not like giving them a giftcard.

Now, it's not as simple as giving cash, but it's not that much more complicated than how they must get their tips if you tip on a credit card or on your room card, yes?

Wow, I can't imagine this would be an issue. They could just exchange it in the register, no big deal.

Hopefully a Mod or CM will chime in on this discussion. I'm really surprised by the "energy" on this one.

I agree with crystalcml on this one. This is not a gift, but for services rendered and would indeed be considered tacky. It would be like working for Wally-World and be paid in Wally World bucks to be redeemed or exchanged in the store for cash.
Try to think how you might feel if your company paid you this way!

I was always under the impression that that could be exchanged for cash because when you pay for something in Disney Dollars you get cash back

This leads me to another question. Since we can't include tip, would we still be able to have to Tip charged back to our room with our door key? I'd much rather do that than be forced to bring cash.

You can pay for disney food with your rewards points, right? I have over $500 in points and I was planning on using that to pay for some of our dinners on site.

On the disney rewards website it states that the disney rewards card will pay for room charges at disney resorts. If you are on the dining plan, you can put the tip on your room key, correct? Then just pay for your room charges when you check out with the rewards card?

here is my offical response from disney:

Thank you for contacting the Walt Disney World Resort.

Yes, you can utilize Disney Dollars to tip your waiter or Waitress. It
is acceptable form of gratuity.

O.k. I have to admit, I have never worked as a server before, BUT I have worked in an amusement park. (So I guess I am half informed).

1) They are easily converted back to cash
2) The employees I am sure spend some money in the parks. I know I did when I worked at the now defunct Geauga Lake Park. Lunch, or a drink, sometimes a snack... or a gift for a family member, it is Disney after all.

Now comes my question, when I put a tip on my credit card or my room key, how does that get paid to the server. Do they get cashed out at the end of the day, or is it added to their pay? Either way, it almost sounds like disney dollars would be the better deal.

when i worked at a hotel and people did this we never saw the tip! it got put into the hotel's profit pot

That's illegal, although I'm not sure there's anything you can do about it at this point - unless "when I worked at..." means up until the last few months or so.

But, when you charge your tip to your room, just as with a credit card the Cast Member DOES get this money, in their paycheck that covers the period during which you dined. Say they get paid on the 15th and 29/30/31st, and you eat at Spoodles tonight.

The amount you tip (minus taxes and other applicable payroll deductions) will appear in the paycheck dated 4/15.

These are fine. I have seen more than one cm cashing in the Disney dollars at registers of the stores. It is a common practice.

previous CM here...

if you have automatic gratuity, that will be paid to the server in their next weekly pay check.
optional tips, wether they be cash or on credit card, are paid to the server at the end of the evening when they cash out.
I would not be upset if i was paid in disney dollars, they have the same value as the cash and they can be easily swapped out with the GT at the end of the night.

Thank you so much princessjilly I didn't want the CMs to think I was tacky! Thanks for the clarification.
