Hi I have heard that Disney have scarpped the Disney Dollar, does anyone have any info if this is true

They were there in early March. I havem't heard that they're doing away with them, I don't see why they would -- kids love them, and it commits people to spending that money at Disney.

But, who knows.

^ What do you mean The Disney Store doesn't do Disney Dollars anymore? They wont accept them? Or they dont sell them?

They don't sell them they will still accept them I think. But if you go ask them for Disney Dollars they will tell you that you have to get a gift card now. (Or they told me that in Charlotte)

Correct, none of the Disney Stores still sell Disney Dollars, no clue if you can use them in the stores anymore. I could definately see them discontinuing offering the sale of the dollars, even in the parks, although, I think they'll be obligated to accept them for a very long period of time.

I think the "getting rid of Disney Dollars" has floated around for a while. Even Disney Stores would say they won't get any more, and then got more...but with refillable gift cards becoming ubiquitous they seem mostly redundant from the business point of view.

You can redeem your Disney Dollars at Disney Stores, you just can't purchase there.

:sad1: I really wanted to get some for my granddaughters, I think I will have to write to Disney

There's no indication of them leaving the parks yet as a matter of fact they sold them in Mickey's Groove at Downtown Disney when I worked there. Next time you go down you can go there and get some.:thumbsup2

If they stop making them... I wonder if they will be come Collectible?

Some of the rarer issues (such as limited edition commemorative bills in higher denomination amounts, like the ones issued when WDW had its 25th anniversary) are already collectibles and command decent prices among currency collectors. Early versions of bills with Princess art are also in demand.

Here are a few examples of valuable Disney Dollars:

The only $50 denomination ever issued, for the 50th anniversary of Disneyland. Produced in very small quantities, these now go for four figures:

2002 Tinkerbell, considered the best of the few she appears on. Goes for $150-200 when it appears for sale.

They are still available at the parks at both Guest Services and the Emporium on Main Street USA.

Right... they can stop making them. But they can't stop accepting them.

Oh they absolutely could stop accepting them, not that I think they will. All they have to do is advertise a date by which you must trade them in for real dollars. As long as you have a reasonable time or method to do this they most definitely could discontinue.

I can see them stopping creating them at some point. They have a significant cost to printing and then managing the currency.

I think there are a lot of limitations as to whether or how they can stop accepting them, especially when you are dealing with "same as cash" type currency. If there is no advertised expiration date, it is very difficult to then just say, "hey, they are going to expire..." even if that is two years or more out.

In most cases, bankruptcy is required to get out from the liability of such things.

Not true. See doc's post.
