Disney Dollars being scrapped

Some of the rarer issues (such as limited edition commemorative bills in higher denomination amounts, like the ones issued when WDW had its 25th anniversary) are already collectibles and command decent prices among currency collectors. Early versions of bills with Princess art are also in demand.

Very much agree. The 1997 bills (Sorcerer Mickey - 25th Anniversary) often go for 500% over their face amount (ie. $1 bill sells on average for about $5). It's a small denomination bill and a ton were made, so the fact that they sell that far above face is pretty impressive.

I think this rumor resurfaces for a couple reasons. One gift cards. Two they don't issue the disney dollars every year. A rumor as old as the internet.

Guests have been collecting Disney Dollars for years. Disney was smart by issuing different characters and different poses each year.

There are a lot of them out of circulation that will never be used.

I bought some back in 1987 when they were first issued and my ex wife bought me a matched set of a one and five dollar bill framed that I have seen selling on ebay for ten times what she paid for them.

The 1987 Disneyland and Disney World (series A) seem to command some pretty high prices. I bought some sets off ebay that had one Disneyland and one Disney World bill sets that have stamps on them (a six cent Walt) and others. The last time I saw these sets for sale they were five times what I paid for them.

As to whether they can stop redeeming them, i doubt it....we are planning on buying 100 crisp new uncirculated bills next trip!

They could stop redeeming just over a long period of time not in a short span of time.

Disney won't stop with Disney Dollars. I was reading an article about the fact that there are millions in Disney Dollars that have never been reclaimed. As other point out - sure some end up as collectors items and you can get value for them...but either way, Disney keeps the money you spent on it.

This is like saying they are going to stop Pin Trading. So much money to be made off little pieces of paper. It'll never happen.

PP is correct though, they DID stop selling them at the Disney Stores. Not sure why, though.

So are the no expiration gift cards. Just like gift certificates before them. That's why a lot of companies have been trying to add expirations to their cards, but the government has refused in a lot of cases.

When they issue any sort of cash equivalent, they are trading the immediate income for the later liability. By adding expiration, they are gambling/hoping that some will forget them...nearly free income.

Color Xerox machine, scanners and color printers are making it easier to counterfeit paper gift certificates. I understand that is one reason for the switch to plastic cards. I doubt it would be cost effective to counterfeit a Disney Dollar. Weren't Disney dollars released in $10 denominations?

Disney would have an issue unilaterally declaring Disney dollars worthless. I suspect Disney could limit the places which will accept Disney Dollars. Guest services or mail them in.

Southwest sold drink coupons without an expiration date. Those coupons will soon be expiring. Airlines aren't subject to local laws so the situation isn't exactly the same.

My guess is Disney could stop accepting the Disney Dollars and require guests mail them for either real money or for a gift card.

Coupons fall under different rules. Gift certificates, gift cards and Disney Dollars are all "cash equivalents".

But yes, Disney could stop accepting them at all locations and require that they be redeemed at a central location - they just have to still provide the cash equivalent.

But then they are still accepting them...they can limit them to needing to go to Guest Services and converting them to a gift card if they want, but again they are still accepting them.

Chances are fairly unlikely that DD are going anywhere soon--many (possibly most) of the people who buy them aren't interested in using them as cash. They want to keep them. That's not a bad deal for the company selling paper at that return.

Disney Stores still are accepting Disney Dollars, however we are no longer selling them. I can't tell you how many guests come in asking for them. We were told that Disney wanted to make them 'more park exclusive' so that is the reason they stopped selling them in the stores. Whether or not that is the real reason, I don't know. 99% of the guests will then purchase a gift card, however I know DD are more fun and receive.

A while back when the stores stopped selling them Disney "claimed" it was part of a green initiative.
