Disney dining and kids menus

I feel like my poor kids are going to be stuck eating pizza and hot dogs everyday for lunch and dinner I really thought that Disney would have a better selection of kids meals. This will be fine for my 6 year old but my 7 year old is a really good eater and likes lots of variety. Am I missing something? We are on the ddp but I have a feeling will be paying oop for most meals for him. Anyone know if I can change his tickets to adult?

Have you looked at the menus? There are very few places for kids to get pizza or a hot dog for dinner at Disney. Yes you can upgrade you 7yo to an adult but would have to pay an extra $28 per day plus the price difference of the park ticket. It would be better to pay OOP for any extras he may want.

I agree, most locations offer one or two things that mimic the adult menu and at least one safe bet kids food that's in the kids 'norm'.

Not to say that the variety is great, but there's usually at least one option that's more like the adults menu. (The more adventurous things are usually in the Kids Complete Meal section)

Hi - I just got back from our first Disney trip. Yes, I felt like my kids were stuck eating chicken nuggets, hot dogs, mac and cheese or pizza. There are some places that offer other things like a chicken drumstick (sunshine seasons). The restaurants usually have something like grilled chicken or fish. The upside is that they alway offer carrots, grapes, salad, applesauce, etc. with all kids meals.

One thing that I did not realize until half way through our trip is that ALL counter service credits are pooled. That means your 7 year old can order any counter service meal he/she wants - it does not have to be from the kids menu. Now this is for counter service only. At the restaurants they must order from the kids menu and the credits are separated into adult and child.

Another thing I learned is that you can usually substitute your counter service dessert (these are usually not very good - chocolate cake, carrot cake, cannoli - I was not impressed with any of them) for another side, like grapes or carrots, or even a salad sometimes.

I found that if you order a counter service breakfast, you can choose whole pieces of fruit instead of the 2 drinks you are allowed. I don't drink coffee and really just want water in the morning, so we usually got a banana and orange with our breakfast.

Disney World is magical - you will have a great time!

For a family like yours....2 A, 2 C + a free child, I think that lots of buffets and family style meals are the way to go!

Any buffet restaurants or family style ('Ohana, Whispering canyon ...your son can get the skillet, Akershus) places are going to be your best value and your best variety, especially on the dining plan. I would NOT upgrade him to adult. You'll pay an extra $28/night for the dining plus the additional cost of his ticket.

I found that we did well when we shared 2 child CS breakfasts (we aren't big breakfast eaters) and 2 Adult CS lunches and then did the TS meals using our allotted credits. If we needed something to eat between meals, we got a snack. A pretzel, popcorn, ice cream, etc did well to tide us over between meals.

What restaurants do you have planned? Do you have your reservations? It's not too late to make changes so that you can best utilize your DDP credits AND make sure your son is happy with the variety of foods offered!

And as a bonus, at family style and buffet meals, your littlest one eats for free. No worries about buying the little one something to eat or having to order something that you can share! Imagine, a vacation where YOU can get what YOU want to eat because you don't have to split your dinner with the baby?!?? That was a real treat for me

Maybe I am looking at the wrong menus but every place I was just looking at offered hot dogs on the childs menu. I just feel like its very limited amount of items on the child menus like four or five options. He would eat almost everything on the adult menus though.

I forgot about the park tickets having to change also if I upped him in the dinning. thanks.

I did not know that about the counter service!! Thanks for that info!!! I would rather a fruit then 2 drinks and glad my oldest can have an adult meal!!!

Don't count on being able to get more than 2 adult meals at a time though. Your card says 2A/2C so you can order your CS meals ...for sure.... in those amounts at any given transaction. For example, you can go up and get 2 Adult meals and 2 C meals. Your husband can be right behind you getting 2 more Adult meals if you want, same card, same account, different transaction. If you'd tried to get 4 Adult, 2 C meals at one time, you may be turned down.

Since this is somewhat related to the op, I was wondering, if I am on the ddp and eat at AK's Restaurantosaurus, does my child have to get the happy meal, or can he get any item on the menu...i checked the menus on allears and it doesn't list a childrens menu. Thanks for you help.

We went to Restaurantosaurus in October with my DS4 and he did have to order the Happy Meal, sorry I don't have happier news.

On the plus side - he LOVED his toy! It was different than the regular happy meal toys - a dinosaur squirt gun. Heaven for a 4YO boy!

I do not have a child under 9, but those who do, this is what I know as for the basic DDP for children 3-9 years old. Your child between those ages on that DDP can order an appetizer with their TS meal (sadly, there's no appetizer for adult on the basic plan)

What about the TS that say $2.00 extra, i.e., Le Cellier's steak on the kids menu says for an extra $2.00. Does this matter, or is it included in the dining plan regardless of the price? My DD loves steak!!

When we did the DDP in October, DS ate steak every chance he had and we were never charged the extra up-charge.

Yes but it's a childrens appetizer not a choice from the adult menu & the appetizer is already included in the complete meals. Usually it's a salad, soup or veggies.

I am not clear about how it works to order 4 adult meals when your plan says 2 adults/ 2 children.

Won't it just come off your card that you used 4 of your adult meals? Even if both adults stand in line for 2 different transactions?

As far as I know, only the TS meals are separated by child/adult credits.

So when you check in for a 6 night stay, you'll have 12 A TS credits and 12 C TS credits, 24 snack credits and 24 Counter service/QS credits. They aren't/or weren't separated by age.
