All these ideas are so cool! :flower:

I love the tye dye ones.I've read the directions several times but I still don't "get" how ya do the head.

zurgswife...I'm really hoping you post some pictures of the process. It would be greatly appreciated! :)

Great job everyone!!! :cool1:

zurgswife thanks for sharing those turned out reallly good :)

I think on the other ones I'll use a little less color...the mickey head gets a little lost...

I will post pics of what each set looks like but I haven't got all the pics loaded on the web yet...

Time Estimate

1.Wash shirt.....25mins
2. Draw stencil....1min
3. Baste stencil....10mins
4. Soak in activator...10mins
5. Put on all rubber bands...10-15mins
6. Put on all the dye....10-15mins
7. Soak in Plastic bag 24hrs. (very important step)
8. rinse (I just throw it in the washer cycle by itself) 25mins.
9. dry..

I just glanced through this and LOVED the shirts. I did not read through this whole thread but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues raised about copyright infringement? I would love to make a shirt, but I am kind of concerned about using the mouse image. Does Disney seem to mind? :confused3

I think as long as you're not selling them you should be fine. There are sites that have Disney images for you to use for whatever as long as it's for your own personal use not for profit. I could be wrong, but I'm sure someone on here will correct me if I am.

Claim: Disney forced the removal of murals featuring their cartoon figures from the walls of three Florida day care centers.

Status: True.

Origins:
Disney discovered in 1989 that three Hallandale, Florida, day care centers had 5-foot-high likenesses of trademarked Disney characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy painted on their walls, Disney threatened to go to court if the centers did not remove the drawings. The threat of legal action did not need to be carried out, as the centers replaced the drawings with cartoon characters belonging to Universal Studios Florida and Hanna-Barbera Productions,

It was in the back of my mind when I made DD's bday shirt but figured that Disney's copyright lawyers were highly unlikely to be wandering around MK that particular Saturday so I willingly took the risk. No one said anything at all about it.

A family creatively using the characters does violate copyright law, but I highly doubt Disney would be willing to take such "little guys" to court over it. Could you imagine the negative publicity if the "big bad corporation" went after a family that loves Disney enough to make shirts using their characters? Not to mention that said family would not have the resources to pay the type of fine warranted in typical copyright infringement cases.

If someone posed the characters in an obscene manner or with bad language, however, totally different story. Disney definitely does (and should) protect their characters' image from that kind of thing.

As a long time craft seller, I have personally seen Disney reps shut down 2 different homemade t-shirt craft concessions for using Disney characters on clothing. One was in Saybrook, CT and the other was in West Palm Beach, FL. The characters in CT were painted on onesies and toddler t-shirts. The characters in FL were painted on adult t-shirts. In both cases, the shirts were confiscated with no financial restitution made to the crafters.

Having said that, I seriously doubt Disney would do anything to people who have made shirts for their own personal use to be worn in the parks. However, I would absolutely not attempt to sell any of these shirts on ebay (as I believe one poster suggested).

the kids are having their b-day about two weeks before we leave for WDW. I'll have to make us some family tie dye mickey shirts.

Love all the dyed MM shirts. I went a different route- I used my embrodier sewing machine and a Disk with all the characters on it and made a bunch of stuff with embrodieried stuff on it. Did 2 dresses and several shirts.
I then wanted something for Flower and Garden, and used a free downloaded floral wreath desige. I put a big one in the center and then shrunk the same design and put 2 smaller "ears" on the big floral center. I make 2 shirts this way. One had a large floral MM head in the center. The other had 3 smaller floral MM heads across the front.
For sewing/embrodier machine users-
I used the designs that came with my embrodiery program and just made them into circles, sized the different designs in 2 sizes for each head and then combined stitches. I created 5 different floral MM head designs this way.
Also Brother Sewing machine company is the Authorized Disney dealer, and they have at least 5 different disks of designs for use. NOT resale, as I understand. And some programs will convert the Brother disks to any othe sewing machine laungage. I have a Viking Hus. Designer 1. and the editing software, and have done a lot of Disney stuff with it, all for personal use!
I also combined hand fabric painting with embrodiery Charactes for a shirt or 2. For a dress I used an Applique MM head and put "hidden" MM's on it, one on the sleeve and one at the hem line near a side slit.Lots of fun!, specially since the dress if lavender with lime pooka dots on it, and I used a lime fabric as the applique fabric.
I will try and figure out how to make the digital camera/computer work together- they seem to have "issues" with each other when I am trying to get them to work together!

Also if you want to tye dye shirts and then have MM heads on them you can make stamps out of fun foam and use Dyna-Flow or other fabric paint to stamp the design. After dyeing, washing and drying you would stamp the MM heads, and follow the directions. There are also several other products you could use. I have used the color changing powdered Pigments that are also used in a lot of other crafting area. As long as you mix the powers with a permant fabric paint, not dye, they work great.
I get a lot of my stuff from a web site called Darma Trading Comp. in SanRafeal Cal. Fast, fun, and very easy to work with. http://www.dharmatrading.com/

Also made a Cindy dress last year and used several heat set crystals on it. They do not wash off, and are used on wedding dresses and the Ladies Harley Davidson shirts. Lots of other stuff too.
http://www.suesparklers.com/
http://www.creative-crystal.com/
http://www.ejoyce.com/pmain?cmd=e_listmain

Both sites sell designs that have circles in different sizes that could make MM heads... or other designs. I like the 2 site a little more, they are some times cheaper and faster getting stuff to me.

great thread, and as you all can see, I love fabric, and fiber stuff! one can never have to much of it! for me it would be like to many trips to disney, and no one can ever go to many times!

What great shirts-I am going to have to give it a try for our next trip.
Now I wonder if I can get DH to wear one...Hmmmm.... ::yes::

Will you please post a report on them (on this thread) when they come in? I'd appreciate it!

Hey!

They came in and they are great quality. They came exactly as we made them on their site. My friend and I were worried about the design peeling off before we recieved them but after getting them, we are confident that they won't. Hope this helps. The delivery was pretty fast I thought too. I will definitely be using this site again!

I made everyone a t-shirt for a big family trip in August '03. Not everyone was thrilled to be wearing matching t-shirts though.....................

I bought some spray dye at Michaels, I forget the name but it was with all the fabric paints. I used five different colors and tryed spraying it on a dry shirt and wet shirt for different looks. I wound up using the wet application because it gave a look of watercolor to the shirts. I made a pattern on funfoam using plates to get the dimensions right. Then on the back I used a scene from the kids Disney Magic Artist cd rom, Cinderella castle with the monorail in the foreground. Using Disney font I wrote Mathews-Caswell-Engler World Tour 2003, wrapping the words over top of the castle.

For my kids birthdays last year I made birthday shirts. This one I made using Microsoft Picture It. It says "Celebrating five years of adorable faces" and on the back it says "I brake for cake" with a little picture of a birthday cake.

This has the front of my sons shirt, without the pink ribbon trim.

HM...this could be done in reverse, I think. Why couldn't you cut out a foam mickey and spray the rest of the shirt? Would it be too much to spray, using too much product? (meaning too expensive) Will the spray dyes work on colored t-shirts I wonder?
