Disney Cruise/ Giftcard ?

I'm trying to avoid using credit cards, can you use a Disney giftcard to pay off tabs and stuff on the cruise? If you can, where can you purchanse the giftcards? I know my kids recieved one from a relative and there only good at the Disney parks and on the cruise.
