Disney and immigrants..this is interesting..

The Senate hearings held just last week where the laid-off Disney IT employee broke down in tears was largely ignored by the mainstream media. I figure it is because it was 1) old news or 2) simply overwhelmed by other stories or 3) against the media's agenda(s) or 4) some mix of the three. I'm guessing 4...

Also, remember Disney owns ABC which makes up a large segment of the media. Seems pretty easy to keep a damper on negative coverage.
The story has been developing for some time now, and I have to admit, it makes me uncomfortable. Very disrespectful to their employees.

Betterline up many US companies for doing the same thing!.....slimey yes.............our fault for not forcing these companies to keep USS jobs. US jobs! Buy Made in the USA.

Just thank your representatives for this immigration law. Next you can count on non-citizens voting.

Net immigration is zero...and "illegals" yield billions into the economy and then spend it right back in...

But you know...don't let the facts...

Oh, the times....

Maybe where you are, here in Chicago you could not be more wrong about that.

Facts are funny things.....

  • From 2009-2014, net migration was -140,000. Because of the recession, roughly 140,000 more Mexican nationals left the country than migrated in from Mexico.
  • Yet, from July 2014 through June 2015, the trend was completely reversed. There was a 740,000 net increase in Mexican migration. The population from Mexico grew 449,000 in just the first 6 months of 2015 alone!
  • And this doesn’t factor in the massive influx from Central American countries. There has been a 460,000 net increase in immigration from Central America since July 2014.

It's a political red herring...much of the country is convinced that their "good paying" jobs are being taken from them by immigrants...

The reality is those were given away by businesses and governments since 1970.

Add a little ingrained American bigotry and you got yourselves the classic fake political football.

Basically we're talking about the new Irish/Polish/Italians/Pick Your Nationality. At one point or another they were all going to steal our jobs, not speak the language and "destroy" this country.

I've said this so many times, but the problem with Disney's actions had nothing to do with the country of origin of the workers they were going to use and everything to do with the fact they wanted to lay off well paid employees and hire cheaper replacements.

I agree, with an addendum:

... by conspiring with a 3rd party contractor and a corrupt congress and administration in order to violate immigration laws ... which for anyone not connected to a major US corporation would have resulted in hard time in a federal prison.

If the facts are as claimed.

Sure, but do we really doubt they would have happily violated other laws if it could save them money and they could get away with it? The fact it was immigration laws strikes me as a detail rather than a key point in the whole endeavor.

The headlines on this always come back to immigrants because it's an attention grabbing hot political topic, but it's mostly a red herring. Corporations (not just Disney) are driving down wages any way they can (legal or illegal), wages have been largely static (after factoring inflation) for decades now. They will continue to do this as long as they can find ways to do it regardless of immigration policies. Chasing after immigration policy will not change the fundamentals of how the US economy now works.

My response was to your claim that "net immigration is zero". That is simply not the case and certainly has nothing to do with bigotry. I think you are the one looking for a pickup game if "fake political football".

I didn't make any claims about net zero immigration...

Oops, thought this was a response to one of my posts. Ignore the brain fart.

I don't see Disney happily violating any other federal laws by committing tax evasion, polluting, robbing banks, kidnapping, securities fraud, or transporting a minor across a state line for an immoral purpose. And I can't imagine them getting away with those things for long even if they did feel so inclined.

So the question, if you're interested, is why can American corporations happily break federal immigration laws and get away with it with complete impunity? When anyone else who tries the same thing is called a "human trafficker" and thrown in prison?

That's not an unimportant detail, that's saying something pretty big about the USA, its corporations, and Disney Corporation in particular.

But I think you have to look at it in the context of general population growth. There has been no net gain according to the us census since 2000...

But over time our population has risen and therefore the "rise" in immigrants compared to the whole population has not increased.

I was clueless about these things until I started looking at some studies and figures and after realized that there really is no problem. But I should have trusted that when I realized who was pushing it...because it's easier to manipulate people when you make crap up...so says the talking picture panel and fair and balanced coverage.

I think my friend is right when it comes to Disney on this issue - they have had some bad publicity of late because they are trying to save some pennies off skilled labor. They are guilty as charged but will not suffer at all.

Is that rhetorical? I think you know the answer to your questions...
