Disney add-on limitations?

My wife and I are Disney lovers, and have decided after much discussion to buy into DVC. I am having a difficult time trying to decide how many points to purchase, however. I guess I am reluctant to make a huge point investment until we are sure that we are ready to jump in with both feet.
My strategy is this:
We purchase a small resale contract (75-100 points), stay at our home resort every other year, and decide after a few stays to either purchase more points or stand pat with our original contract.

Question #1: how small a resale contract can we purchase and STILL be able to do an add-on purchase through Disney?
Question #2: if we end up buying a small contract and later elect to do a Disney add-on, how important would it be to get the same user year (we would buy into BWV and add on at the same)?

In response to your question #1, I believe the minimum add-on through Disney is 25 points if you are paying cash, 50 points if you are financing.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe that all add-ons through Disney must have the same use year. We have added on twice through Disney and all of our contracts have the same year. However, others here who have purchased resales may have more information about this than I do.

The smallest possible resale would be 25 points - since that is the smallest possible number of points ever sold together.

Once you are a member - regardless how few/many points you own - you will have all benefits of membership including being able to purchase add-on points from Disney. As Minniefan noted, the minimum add-on is 25 points or 50 if you want Disney financing. While 25 is the minimum, any number may be purchased above that (26, 27, 28, etc.).

Disney will usually only allow add-on purchases in the same Use Year.

You can purchase any size resale contract, and then add on later through Disney. Once you've bought your first contract, you're an owner with the same rights as everyone else. So if you found and bought a 25 or 50 point contract, you could add on later as you wished. The minimum add-ons are in the above post, along witht he infor about use year.

Once you are entered into the DVC system as a DVC member, no matter where you purchased the points, or how many points you puchased, you are eligible to add-on directly through Disney.

If you want to add-on directly through Disney, you have basically two choices:

- You can add on as few as 25 points (50 if you want financing) that must use your current Use Year

or if you want a different/new UY

- you must purchase the minimum 150 points to go with that UY

Again, this only applies if purchasing directly through Disney. There are no such requirements if purchasing resale.

The real problem will be finding points. If your use year is sold out, you'll need to wait until Disney ROFRs a contract for them to be able to sell you more points. Sometimes people spend months waiting for a small number of points. Sometimes, they call and have them in their account the next day.

As having just recently added on through Disney onto a 100 point BWV master contract that was purchased through our sponsor here where we became new DVC members, I can second what Dean said.

As others have said, he was wrong. I just posted on another thread our recent experience. Just closed on a 25 point contract to get us into the system and immediately did a 55 point add on. We were going to do a 50 point add on, but our guide suggested 55 so that 3 years worth of points would give us a Sun-Thurs in a 2 br unit at our chosen resort (Hilton Head during the prime summer time). Not saying that this is how we plan to use the points, but if we had only purchased 50, then we decided to do something like this, we would be 15 points short and have to deal with that.

We purchased 100 points through resale. We ended up doing 2 more resale contracts until buying direct through Disney. We find it usually cheaper to do resales. We have been able to find the point amounts we want at the locations we want with fairly good success. Sometimes there is a wait involved, but we haven't found it to be that long.

Since we bought 3 different resales, we had 3 different use years. I will say it can be somewhat difficult to manage, but if you are organized and into DVC like I am, it can actually be fun to manage. At any rate, we finally bought direct through Disney this year and spoke to one guide who was willing to sell us points with ANY use year. We spoke to another guide who was only willing to sell us points in one of our 3 use years (we were looking for under 100 points).

Reading the posts here leads me to believe that perhaps we were not clear to the OP. I will recap so that we are all being clear:

The normal buy-in is a 150 pt contract. If you buy resale instead, you can buy whatever is available, whether it's 25 pts or more. Resale requires that you have the cash available up-front, but with Disney you can finance with them--and they are VERY lenient. Regardless, you will have the same rights as everyone else, no matter where your contract was purchased. When you purchase thru Disney, you can begin to make reservations as soon as you're approved, which can take as little as two or three days, while a resale requires a closing, which takes 6 weeks or more. When you buy resale you need to add the closing costs, which are $350-$500, slightly less for small contracts. This cost is the reason many people opt to buy add-on pts thru Disney, which does not charge the closing costs to you.
