Has anyone done this? Is it really crowded? We thought it would be a unique experience (and apparently everyone gets a medalion which we thought the kids may like after finishing the walk) but given we are coming all the way from Australia and have limited time the other thought was to avoid the relevant park altogether those days.

Any thoughts or advice?

It will be pretty crowded at Epcot that day. The 1/2 marathon is the same morning (29,000 people) but that will be over by 9:30 I'm not sure how many are doing the 5k. My DH & DS are doing it. Just be aware there is a time requirement for finishing the race. They require a 15 min mile. On the marathon races they sweep you off the course & you cant finish if you dont maintian that pace. I'm not sure if they bother with that on a 5k or not.

i just looked in the official Marathon Weekend guide book and there wasn't much said about the 5K. It said nothing about the pacing requirements. I would check out the website to be sure. I know a few people who are running it, but no one walking.

I'd hate for you to take the time and then be swept off the course! I also think this is the first year they are giving medals for the 5K.

My understanding is they changed format this year to allow MORE PEOPLE in. Saturday is the 5K and half and Sunday is the full. After speaking to WWoS, the OP is right, they sweep on every race except the family fun on Friday. You may want to check that out

There will be alot of people there compared to normal 5k runs but it would still be something fun to enter if you get the chance. The kids that participate seem to have a blast and everyone gets a medal. This year it is supposed to be themed with chicken little. You can go to www.disneyworldmarathon.com and click on the family fun run link to get more information.

I did the 5K two years ago and plan to do it again this year. We started outside the park in the parking lot (near the starting point for the longer races), did about 1/2 the race outside the park through the backstage areas (behind Test Track and Mission Space). Then we entered Epcot on the left side of Spaceship earth near the bathrooms, headed around the left side of the World Showcase, finished up past Spaceship Earth again, then left the park near the kennel/stroller pick up area. It was a lot of fun for me and my son. My husband did the 1/2 marathon that year.

I was supposed to do the 5K again last year but got sick the night before, so my son and I didn't do it. Husband did the full marathon last year.

This year, the two of us are going the 5K, my husband will be doing the 1/2 marathon on Sat (and finishing before we start the 5K). Then on Sun my husband will try to complete the Goofy Challenge and do the full marathon.

My DH is doing the "Goofy" thing too! He ran a marathon this morning as a practice run for Disney. Crazy people!!

After the Goofy Challenge, I am putting him in the car and we are heading out to sail on the Disney Wonder. I am assuming he will be too tired/sore to tour the parks. On the ship he can sit in a lounge chair and kick back.
