I didn't realise that Mickey and Minnie Mouse were bunnies. When did they have the animal change operation?

They are actually wearing bunny costumes... There is a bunny face embroidered on the hoods.I didn't realise that Mickey and Minnie Mouse were bunnies. When did they have the animal change operation?
