Discovering DVC timandlesley style-A PTR, 19 days TRIP REPORT LINK PG.119!!!!!

Welcome back! We drive to Bakersfield - 10 hrs in one day, but we don't stop for anything, and I'm sure that it would be 12 hrs w/kids. I think I would fly if its in your budget. If we are going 12 hrs to Vegas or LA, we break it up in to 1 night and one early day to arrive mid-afternoon on the 2nd day.

I know, Donaldsgal, that memories can be made on a roadtrip - believe me I have lots of those from my childhood. :lovestruc And you can teach kids alot about the areas you are driving through. There- I appealed to the teacher in Lesley! But I love the convenience of flying!

Glad you had a nice vacation!

What I would do regarding the flying vs. driving thing is calculate how much it would cost to drive down and back. Then, set a price limit for airfare and if airfare hits the comparable cost you had in mind (which would make it more cost effective to fly), then purchase the airfare. Sometimes with the cost of gas and the possibility of having to stop for meals and an overnight stay (just think if someone doesn't feel well or bad traffic holds things up or torrential downpours, etc.) it might be cheaper to fly.

Congrats on the passes!!!

WOO HOO for annual passes!:cool1: I would fly for those prices! Less wear and tear on your car AND your bodies! You all travel so much that flying for this one trip really makes sense...at least that is what I would do!:goodvibes

I totally vote flying if you can swing it $ wise. That kind of drive can wreck you for a day or 2!!

I vote flying too. That is a great price for all 4 of you. I can understand wanting to make family memories on a road trip. Something else to think of is you will be tired after the long drive.

Good luck with your decision !

My vote = FLY!! There's nothing like getting there in a few hours. That is a GREAT price. We usually end up paying $1,200 for 4 of us from Boston to Orlando. Congrats on the AP's :cool1:

I'm three hours north of Leslie and we are planning on driving for the first time this year. When I look at airfare for $200/pp and I can drive for less than $150 r/t, in gas, it just seems more logical to drive. I know the time spent in the car is going to be a lot, and it may not always be fun, but our kids will remember that time. We drive to Omaha, which is 12-13 hours, so what's a couple more hours? Drive one time, see if you can do it, and if you decide it was hell, don't do it again. I think $690 for four people is still quite a bit, but airfare out of Cincy is probably a bit more than flying out of Detroit. We've been able to get airfare for $125 r/t. It's entirely up to you and your wallet. My DH was fighting me on the flying vs driving thing, but for us, this year, it was the difference in going or not going. Plus I'll have more money to spend when I get down there. The convenience of flying and Magical Express are great, but I am looking forward to having my car this trip so that we can take the kids to IOA. I remember family vacations in the car and there is still always something that we can talk about. Again, it's up to you and everyone has there opinions. I may never want to drive again either.

Okay, people. I know there were more people encouraging Lesley to drive a few pages back.*tap tap* Is this thing on? :lmao: I still say drive, but I'm shouting in the middle of a hurricane, apparently. ;) :goodvibes

I'm with you, donaldsgal! My vote goes to driving. My parents used to drive to all our vacation destinations (even New Mexico which is quite a trek from Alabama)! I have the best memories from those trips.

DH and I drove to WDW in December and had a BLAST! Of course, we have a much shorter drive at only 8 hours and there were no kiddos to keep entertained. Still, when you drive, the anticipation is drawn out, and having your car (especially for as long as you lucky ducks will be staying) can be priceless! You don't have to worry about limiting what you bring with you - or more importantly, what you take back!

What a great airfare! I would fly. We always fly (usually Delta) and then rent a car at the airport (ressies ahead of time) from Dollar.

I know you mentioned before that you were wanting to bring down more items with you since you are going to be there for so long, so I think driving will still be a better choice for you if you still really want to do that, but if you okay to forget about that stuff, I would fly then.

Boy, there are plusses and minuses to flying AND driving!! I'd do what your gut is telling you to do!!

When we drive, we drive through the night. Not sure if you and Tim are into that, but when the kids are sleeping through at least 8 hours of the trip, it makes it much easier! Plus, traffic is pretty sweet at 3 in the morning. It also gives me lots of time to listen to my own music and Podcasts!

Let us know what you decide... either way, the end result it pure MAGIC!!

Hi Lesley,
My vote is for flying. That price looks really good to me. I know how you feel when the kids get bored and you just wish you were there already. We drove 10 hours last year and it wasn't fun. This year we are flying even though in the end it only saves us 2 hours with airport time and taking ME to Disney. I do like driving just because I can whatever souvenirs I want and I do tend to overpack.

That's a great price on flights! I would definitely fly! Time is money you know! Especially in a car with impatient kids that want to get to WDW!

hehe

Thanks to EVERYONE for chiming in on the flying/driving debate. I am 90% sure we will be flying now. Here is the deal. We are refinancing our mortage (getting a great rate and going from a 30 year to a 25 year). As long as it goes through, which it should and we close this week, as we should then we would skip this and next months mortgage and I would buy airfare this week. I'll keep you posted.
On ANOTHER Disney note. I made some changes to our reservations today. We now are staying at AKL from June 21-28th. Remember I had added on one night on the 21st at Saratoga Springs using our Developer points, well I decided that was stupid to stay one night there, then switch to AKL and then back to SSR. So I changed it today. That being said that freed up some more developer points that we HAVE to use by July sooooooooooooooooooo we now are staying at SSR from June 28th-July 8th instead of the 7th, so we have ONE MORE DAY OF DISNEY FUN!!!! :cool1: :yay:

Well, I am now going to post our Gatlinburg Mini TR below, so enjoy that. I'll keep you posted on the airfare!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lesley

So,why not have a mini TR inside of our Dis trip report. There was a Disney outlet there of course, so some Disney tied in. . . . .ENJOY!!!

Sorry guys, had trouble with the post, stay tuned.

So, we had a FANTASTIC time in Gatlinburg.
We finished up Luke’s Valentine’s party at school which went GREAT then headed home to get Mickey and got on the road. We made GREAT time and arrived in our cabin around 9:45.
FUNNY STORY:
We get to the cabin and are SO excited to check things out. We run from the car and like little kids (well two of us are little kids ; ) start running from room to room. As a family we go up the staircase to the top bedroom to explore and as we come down there is a huge bear on the wall:
Gatlinburg2009159.jpg

As we are going by the bear I look at it and saw a HUGE, I mean HUGE hairy spider on the bears eye. I freak out a bit and call Tim up to show him, and he freaks out. O.K., I'm going to try an fast forward this story, but NO LIE it was like 15 minutes of Tim and I throwing things at the spider to determine if it is alive (the kids meanwhile are freaking out crying saying they don't want to stay at the cabin and want to go home AND we haven't even seen 1/4 of the cabin yet). After this drags on and I continue to see my kids getting more and more worked up and my husband unable to get it from the wall I grabbed a broom and tackled the spider. I stabbed it, it went flying and................................... it was FAKE!!!!! We couldn't believe it.

So we calmed the kids down and explored the rest of the cabin. Here are the pics of the cabin:

The hot tub outside:

Gameroom:
Gatlinburg2009148.jpg

What I loved about the game room was that when you were sitting in the hot tub you could see the t.v., very cool!
We each had our own bedroom, with a king sized bed, bathroom and t.v., it was glorious. After the bear incident though Luke was too scared to sleep up there so Lauren and Luke ended up bunking together. Here is a pic of one of the rooms so you get an idea:
Gatlinburg2009145.jpg

We ended up having a pizza delivered that night and stayed up until around 12:30 eating pizza, unpacking and getting settled. Tim and I hit the hot tub and it was a great night : )
The next morning we hit the town. For those of you who haven’t been to Gatlinburg, it has A TON OF STUFF TO DO. Luke had b-day money burning a hole in his pocket and he wanted to do the Car Museum in downtown Gatlinburg. So he and Tim did that. Here is Luke with one of the cars:
Gatlinburg2009016.jpg

That one as from Fast and Furious. Tim said it was awesome, they had everything from the Ghost Busters car, Elvis’ car, Jurassic park vehicles, Dukes of Hazard, Herbie, the Batmobile, Kit from Knight Rider, etc. They loved it!!!
While they were doing “boy stuff” Lauren and I headed across the street to the Wacky Bear Outlet to stuff a bear. She loved it but that place was such a rip off. The bears were super crappy and expensive but Lauren absolutely loved it, so that was fine!
Then we had fun walking around and looking at the stores. Here is Tim and the kids with the big ball in front of the Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum, they always try to stop the ball to no avail:
Gatlinburg2009057.jpg

Then we headed to the Village (our FAVORITE place to shop/hang out/eat in Gatlinburg)
Gatlinburg2009059.jpg

It’s just so quaint there. It’s also home to the Smokey Mountain Candy Kitchen. Here are the kids watching them make the Taffy in the window:
Gatlinburg2009060.jpg

We went to the Life is Good shirt, the entire upper floor was clearance, I got a great shirt there and Luke spent more of his b-day money getting a shirt there too.
After we were all shopped out we headed back to the cabin to relax, squeeze in a nap for Lauren and I (the kids had been up REALLY early that morning after a late night so we were tired). It was Valentines day and we wanted to go to the Park Grill Restaurant, luckily they did call ahead. Here are the kids dressed and ready to leave for dinner:
Gatlinburg2009068.jpg

We got seated right away and the food was great. Steaks/prime rib/ great salad buffet, etc. It was a good time. Here are the kids at the table:
Gatlinburg2009071.jpg

They had a gift shop there and the kids wanted their picture taken with the huge bear there :
Gatlinburg2009069.jpg

After dinner we hit the town again. We had SO MUCH fun doing a mirror maze attraction they had there. We went along for the ride because the kids wanted to do it but Tim and I LOVED IT!!! The kids kept heading towards the exit and we’d pull them back in. we’d take turns hiding and finding one another, HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS, such fun! Then we played Circus golf and kept shopping. Here are Tim and the kids outside that night:
Gatlinburg2009083.jpg

Tim found a sports store that had tons of Yankee stuff so he was in Heaven buying that stuff for the basement. While they were inside buying stuff Lauren wanted to pose for the camera : )
Gatlinburg2009085.jpg

We walked by the Wax Museum and saw this guy:
Gatlinburg2009089.jpg

What a great night. We headed back to the cabin to relax, and Tim and I enjoyed another hot tub night, I could get used to that!!!
The next morning we wanted to go out for breakfast, but we let the kids get in the hot tub first:
Gatlinburg2009002.jpg

Tim shot some pool:
Gatlinburg2009005.jpg

Mickey had fun exploring the cabin:
Gatlinburg2009006.jpg

Gatlinburg2009078.jpg

Luke enjoyed….. um……… warming himself by the fire : ) : ) : )
Gatlinburg2009079.jpg

We headed to downtown Gatlinburg and ate at Flapjacks, what a yummy breakfast. Luke ordered a bear waffle, so cute:
Gatlinburg2009092.jpg

Then we headed to Gatlinburg National Park to hike. We stopped by the cabin and grabbed Mickey and were on our way. I had heard good things about the hike to Laurel falls and was excited to try it. Well, when we got there we got Mickey out and headed to the path, I was SO disappointed when the sign said “no dogs”. Poor Mickey. As we were standing there reading the sign that said no dogs, Mickey was so excited to go on a walk, he darted towards a couple coming up and his leash completely clothes-lined Lauren taking her legs out from under her, not a good start to our walk. Oh well, we put him back in the car and headed up the mountain.
Gatlinburg2009095.jpg

All the signs said this was an easy 1.3 mile hike. I swear it HAD to have been longer. Don’t get me wrong it was so worth it, but it was a long hike, about 45 minutes straight uphill to get there.

Tim and Luke being silly on the trail:
Gatlinburg2009102.jpg

We had fun exploring the rocks on the side of the trail:
Gatlinburg2009104.jpg

There were HUGE drop offs so we had to keep a close eye on the kids:
Gatlinburg2009107.jpg

Finally we made it to the top, it was BEAUTIFUL:
Gatlinburg2009117.jpg

We took our time enjoying it. Luckily I packed granola bars and water for the kids, so they had their snack and we headed back down. After the great hike we took Mickey to a creek so he could do some nature exploring too:
Gatlinburg2009120.jpg

We dropped Mickey back at the cabin and headed to the Tanger Outlet Mall. OH MY GOSH they had a DISNEY OUTLET THERE!!!!!!!!!!! Let’s just say I did some SERIOUS damage there. We got so many shirts it was insane. I will post pics soon- promise. Also got some good finds at the Old Navy and Nike stores too, such fun!
Luke was begging to go to the Nascar Speedpark next door so we stopped there after the shopping:
Gatlinburg2009121.jpg

Both kids got to race, they had a BLAST. Here is Luke in his race:
Gatlinburg2009126.jpg

And Lauren in her “Baby Bristol” race, so cool they have this for the little ones too:
Gatlinburg2009133.jpg

Then we headed to MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT IN GATLINBURG- APPLEBARN. If you go, you MUST eat here, just love their food. Here are Luke and Tim getting crazy with the Apple Fritters:
Gatlinburg2009124.jpg

Gatlinburg2009141.jpg

We had a GREAT meal and left there feeling SO STUFFED!!! We headed back to the cabin for our last night of relaxing. We enjoyed the fire and the hot tub one last time. In the morning we slept in and called for late check out and got it so that was nice. The kids got in the hot tub one last time as Tim and I packed up, then we headed to downtown Gatlinburg to shop around one last time. It was such a beautiful and sunny day.
Gatlinburg2009161.jpg

We decided to save some money and get hot dogs from a vendor on the street. Tim and I ordered and then the kids and I walked across the street to find a bench in the sun while Tim paid and got the food. We literally ordered;
3 smoked sausages (one for Tim, Luke and myself)
1 hot dog
And 1 diet coke, and 1 lemonade for us each to split.
Tim came over with the food and had this sad look on his face. I said “what’s the deal?” He said, OH MY GOSH, we could have had a great sit downmeal for the amount we just paid for this lunch. It was 35 dollars and some change!!!!!! YIKES!!! It was our stupidity for not looking at the prices, but SERIOUSLY!?!?! Anyway, as we shopped the rest of the day we kept saying “could have gotten 5 of those for the amount we paid for lunch”, “ our whole family could have gone into that attraction and actually gotten change back for the amount we paid for lunch “ Oh well, you live and you learn.
We headed to the Village one last time, it was so beautiful!
Gatlinburg2009163.jpg

We got some Taffy and Peanut Brittle for the road. By then it was around 1:30 and we got back into the car and headed home. Made GREAT time, only took us about 5 hours to get there.
WHAT A GREAT TRIP!!!!!
My current countdown now is: 50 days to Kiawah and 121 days to Disney. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!
Lesley

OK, I am confused:rotfl2: If you fly, are you still leaving to go down on the 21st? I agree that staying at AKL makes more sense than switching back and forth! WOO HOO for an extra day at the end of your trip! Will that be your Universal day, or will you skip Universal if you fly:confused3 Congrats on the refinance! Your trip to Gatlinburg looked AMAZING! Love all of the pics! The one of Luke warming his hind parts is HILARIOUS!:rotfl: Poor Lauren getting clotheslined:sad2: I HATE it when you think a vendor is a cheaper option than a restaurant!:headache: That happened to us in ATlantic City for breakfast too:sad2: GREAT UPDATE!:goodvibes

Diane
