I am trying to decide if I want to stick with my 10-day hopper or upgrade to a DVC AP. (Cost difference is roughly $110)

Are there any major (mostly shopping) discounts not available to DVC Members that are available to AP holders? I logged into my DVC account and looked at the "perks" and compared it to lists on various websites for AP discounts. It is all 10% so that is not in the equation. I am just wondering if my terrible eyesight has caused me to miss something :teacher: .....perhaps there are stores on property that will not honor the DVC Membership, but they will honor the AP for the 10%.

Not sure I understsnd. The AP gets you 10% at all the stores. I think DVC only gets discounts at the DVC resorts and a handful of other shops...
If you're only going to be there for the 10 days and aren't going back in the next 12 months, I don't think the AP is cost effective (unless you're buying over $1000 worth ofmerchandise)

I am an AP holder & DVC Member.

Other than Park admission, there is no extraordinary advantage to having an AP if you are also DVC Member, because the same discounting is going to apply. If anything, DVC may get you some extra discounts (i.e., DVC is honored at some Swan & Dolphin restaurants for discounting) that are not given to AP holders.

But if you really want discounting for merchandise, buy a small item in the morning at a food service place in the Parks, and your receipt will be good for a 20% merchandise discount (with some restrictions). My wife enjoys purchasing Dooney Bourke handbags and that extra 10% we get from the food service receipt saves us enough for our snacks for the entire day.

Is this a year round thing? I never buy anything in the morning ... So I never noticed it before - I might just stop for coffee!

I am not sure about being year round.

It's just one of those things that you may have never noticed at the bottom of your receipt.

But how silly is it - the receipt from a lousy cup of coffee (actually we went to Starbucks, so the coffee was not lousy) gets a patron a larger discount than anything.....and it applies to Dooney Bourke handbags and other expensive merchandise.

Be advised - the receipt has some limitations - not all stores are included on the promotion (but the big shops in each Park are) and you must shop during the specified time frame.

Unfortunately it's not. Disney offers the 20% off coupons a couple of times each year.

Oooooooohhhhhh......

I may have to tone down my wife's expectations.

Somehow with her math - if we buy 5 handbags at 20%, we get one for free.

I'm being silly, everyone knows we'd have to buy 6 handbags.......

OK, we can both stop giggling.

Thank you for the information.

By the way, I'm not surprised, we typically travel during slower times, but not so much since our child started school. However, we will be going into July 4th this year and have every reason to believe Disney will be packed with people. I'll take my 10% DVC discount if I get no coupon....then I'd have to buy 10 handbags before getting a free one and my wife would then have too many Dooney Bourke handbags that look alike.....

;-)

No it's not year round. It's only for a short limited time a couple times out of the year.

It is not the actual merchandise discount that we take advantage of with AP's if you plan to go back twice within the same year that the DVC AP is in effect is where you save money on tickets. It makes it worth the purchase.

That math about Park days is far easier to calculate.

My family is staying shorter number of days the next few years and we are right at the border of AP versus Magic Your Way tickets.

We'll likely pay the few $$ more too have the option for a last-minute long weekend, particularly since my in-laws live close to Disney.

But I use my DVC membership more than AP for discounting anyway.

Thank you! :) That is what I thought I saw in my research as well. And I definitely like to take advantage of those 20% discount coupons when I can. I think I will skip the AP and save the $100.

Yeah, I did think about that part of it as well and that in itself is a great deal, but I intend to skip 2016 and do a Disney cruise instead, so the AP will be used only once.
