Vikings are awesome. I have 4 Vikings sewing machines and a viking serger, and I love them. They are reliable, adn many dealer offer free classes on how to use your machine.

One warning: Vikings are EXPENSIVE. I used to sell them, and a lot of people got sticker shock. The huskystars are good, too, but if you have the $$, I would recommend an entry-level viking. Sometimes, they will have a "trade-up" machine which is slightly used, but still under warranty. Those are usually great deals. Good luck!!

I have the highest end machines, and one mid-level machine, and they changed the entry level machines since I worked for Viking, but if you have any questions, feel free to either ask here, or PM me.

My neighbor mentioned about the used machines, do you think that would be okay to start with? I mean, the machine I am used to only does a straight stitch, so maybe it would be good for me to start with the basics?

I so can relate. When hubby says something about fabric, pattern, ext. I say other than my sewing machine and serger all my stuff is little here a little there. His is always expensive hobbies. And is toy are too.

I like the service Viking provides. While I looked at Vikings, I opted not to buy one, sticker shock for sure!
I was able to get more machine for my money and a warranty at Sears.
I do take classes at our local Viking dealer tho and see lots of others use their. I would buy as much machine as you can afford. I believe I was looking at the Emerald (but its not computerized if I recall) They are supposed to be a wonderful machine. I knew a lady who had the Designer II- WOW!!! I was sooo impressed. It was the first computerized machine I'd used and the embroidery options were truly amazing!

BUT, the American Girl Doll folks have SOME nerve doing a 70's girl.

Course, I was barely born in the 70's.

I love them though!!!!

No wonder every one's making matching clothes, they are SPENSIVE!

I was soooo against Drew getting Julie (the insulting historical 70's doll) when we were in Chicago, but over time I warmed up to her. Her birthday dress reminds me of a flower girl dress my older sister wore that I thought was the fanciest thing ever! I think I'm gonna remake that one in Drew's size. I think it's funny that Drew thinks Julie has the prettiest clothes. Ick! But they are almost so funny that they are cute to me.

I just still don't see the logic of refering to all of us mommies as "historical" to get us to buy their expensive dolls. I guess it works though. I have one of them and Riley says she's getting Julie when she goes on her AG trip too!

Hey were not historical. I was born in 75. Sometimes I may feel a little old but never historical. LOL.

The used machines are fine. I have a few myself. If you can afford it, I would get a machine with an automatic buttonhole foot.

I have owned a few sewing macines in my time and I currently own a viking and I just love it. It is one of the best machines I have ever owned and I feel like it is easy to work with.
shopping for a new machine is fun! have fun I jsut bought a new Emb. machine! Love to shop

I love that top matrial. Is it new? I have never seen it before. I just bought that same dalmation print fabric yesterday. Jenna talked me into it. I think that I am going to put an applique of a puppy on it and use the Simply Sweet dress by CarlaC. What do you have planned for it?

Yeah I know how that goes. DH has a PS3, a Wii and an Xbox 360 that he bought within several months of each other. So when I buy fabric I just say "Well I don't have a insert console here." I end up winning those arguments.

By "Memorable Day" do you mean uber extended family teen drama including tears? Then yes it was very memorable. My 19 yr. old niece (who has wayyy too many funky body part piercings) darling Boy friend is in jail (again) and was in the middle of some personal drama that was really hard for me to keep a straight face while listening to. Now, my other niece,age 16, who every month thinks she's pregnant, wore shorts so short (she's at least 230 lbs if she's an ounce) that I told her "Her foof was hanging out" Except I used the "V" word. She just laughed but I was dead serious. My other nephew, foof girl's brother, brags about the porn he downloads on his phone....his parents don't care.

He's 13. I told him he's making the Baby Jesus cry....

Oh! I was missing a $20 out of my wallet I noticed after they all left.

Great way to start off my day!!!!

Hi Guys! I just want to tell you guys that I love everything that you all make. It is all wonderful! I don't have any kids of my own, but tons of nieces and nephews (and we just keep having them.....there will be three more this year!)

This is what I made this weekend for DD's 4th birthday

It's chocolate cake iced with oodles of buttercream icing, I think I gained 45 lbs just from licking the beaters!!!

What a great cake! I would love a piece right now!

She had her first ear infection about 7 weeks ago, and since then have gotten another 2...so 3 ear infections in 7 weeks. Normally, she is better and the pain goes away after couple days of antibiotic treatment, but she has been in pain since Friday. The pediatrician is thinking that we may have to go see an ENT specialist. I feel horrible for her, and feeling that it is all my fault after a friend told me that breastfed babies doesn't get many recurring ear infections. She also has wheat, eggs, and nuts allergies and again I was told that it was because I didn't nurse her long enough. I nurse her for about 7 months. My ds, on the other hand was nursed until he was 15 months, and has outgrew most food allergies except for dairy and nuts at 18 months old, and has not had been sick much or had an ear infection. I feel like a horrible mom! Sorry, I know I am rambling but I just want to cry every time I think about what was said to me and how my dd's allergies and ear infections are my fault! Anyway, we are off to the doctor's again today!

I know a lot of people have already commented, but I just wanted to comment, too. I breastfed both Tessa and Sawyer until they were 17 months old. Tessa had ear infections and Sawyer didn't. I have a friend with 7 kids. She's breastfed every one of them until at least a year (usually until she gets pregnant again) and a lot of them have food allergies. So, while breastfeeding is great, it doesn't prevent all of these problems!

1st- My husband 28lbs loss 14.14%-wins a free 1 year gym membership
2nd I tied another woman at 9.6% I lost 18lbs, she lost 14.5lbs

Because my team won (which included my husband) both DH and I win $50 Amex gift card.

Just finished cutting out my first Disney outfit for DD. With Mickeys on it- first time I have used fabric with pictures on it.
So do I attempt an appliqued Mickey head or just leave the fabric as is?

I have Heat n bond lite- do I need stablizer too? IF I do the applique I would do it on fabric prior to sewing bodice lining on (which comes very early in the directions.
Do you need photos to help decide?

Yes, you need stabilizer even if you use heat 'n bond! If you don't, it will pucker around the edges.

Ok guys I need some help. Jenna and I can not decide what to make with our prized Minnie Dot fabric. She will be wearing the Minnie Dot outfit to Chef Mickey's. We need help deciding between the three following outfits.

This one is Jen's favorite. I can't remember which one but this is by either Teresa or Heather.

Thanks for the pic. It helps, I dont know what to do. I know DD loves dolls and this will probably be the last opportunity to get her one @ WDW- but they just bug me. Stuffed animals- LOVE THEM! But DD- doesnt really care about them. You should see her with this baby doll. Covers it with a blanket, looks for it, carries it around, gives it a bottle- shes not quite 2- where did she pick this up from???? But I also want to make her happy- my ultimate goal. Im just hoping if Im going to drop "real money" it's a doll I can handle looking at day to day. LOL. Do I sound really really weird?

Coming out of lurkdom to comment...my DD who will be 5 in June got a Bitty Baby for Christmas at 18 months. She takes the doll everywhere with her..."Baby Alexa" has even been to WDW and Epcot. She gets her dressed every morning and puts her pajamas on her every night. She has a few outfits to match the doll. I have finally convinced my mom to make her some so I can quit buying them. This is a great doll for this age. I am debating on getting her a "big" AG doll, but think I am waiting until she turns 6.

Now...a little about me. I have been wanting to learn to sew, but promised DH I would get caught up on my scrapbooks first. So, I have my mom and MIL making outfits and costumes for the girls for our trip in Oct...many ideas came from lurking here.

But I have a question... why would some of you wait until they are older? Just because they appreciate it more and take better care of them? Or is there some other reason? Remember... no kids of my own. But I am a very indulgent aunt. It's my job.

For me, the waiting is because she still has so much fun playing with her "baby" that I don't want to rush her to stop playing with her. That and I have a 4 month old, so Claire takes care of her baby while I take care of mine. It is too cute, actually.

My DH DID have a cow....and some kittens. Hence the "fire sale" I value my happy marriage more than my fabric....and he promised to get me REALLY drunk that night.

Now THAT is love!!! Wow...your fabric "store" is impressive!! I showed my husband and he looked at me very pointedly and said "I would be forced to end my life..." He's not kidding. Poor hubby is obsessive/compulsive. He gets upset by "piles" of anything...and two magazines are a "pile" to him.

I'm massively impressed myself!!! You'll have a TON of money for Disney!!!

My DD10 has Bitty Baby and some AG dolls and still loves ALL of them. DD2 got Bitty Baby for Christmas and really loves her as well. She calls her "Baby Anna".

My husband and I took my step daughter to the AG store in Manhattan. That place is HUGE!!! She looked and looked for the "perfect" doll...finally found her...red hair, green eyes...girl of today. When all was said and done we'd spent well over $150...and do y'all want to know where I found that doll a week later? Oh...in DD's closet, in the box...under her shoes.



She said the dolly was "looking at her and it freaked her out!"... My step daughter LOVES to buy things...loves to pick stuff out...but has little interest once we get it home. This infuriates me. We had nothing when I was small and I loved my babies I did have to ribbons...quite literally. After the AG trip I put a stop to that sort of thing. We stick to art supplies now! And books!

I wonder if they'll make a historical 80's AG doll!!! Leg warmers and mile high bangs!!

As a Mom-sewer I'd put my head together with my Disney-neighbor and we'd knock out some outfits with Hancock fabric in Ohio-in the early 90's they were the only ones who would have odd bolts of disney!

Now we can find it almost everywhere! I see all these beautiful children enjoying their outfits and wonder- Lucky little ones and KUDOS to you talented seamstresses!

Does Dad and MOM ever craft something for their wearing pleasure- (Or do I need to go to another thread to show my Ariel painted levi's or my other Little Mermaid cloths that I wear and the CARS stuff for my hubby?).

My youthful 55 yr old DH wanted Cars clothes....in three trips in 11 months we had not found anything for men. That meant I had to do a wardrobe with Car's fabric.

I am an analogue woman in a digital world so it will take some practice to get the photos to show....

I made a Titanic "Rose chooses life" (red/black dress) for my trip last September, lots of fun to wear after all the hours of beading and handwork-

I forget to tell you all that I saw build a bear sticky notes in the $1 section at michaels- they were kind of like paper dolls. There was a pad of bears, an accessory pad and a pad of outfits. thought some of your kiddos would love those!!

I don't actually sew clothes but I am a quilter. Or trying to be one at least. I actually just got done making three baby quilts for a shower on last Saturday... which is why I actually have time to post and keep up with all your wonderful creations. Not that you all are easy to keep up with... I kind of feel like I need to quit my job to be able to read it all! Not sure my hubby would like that. What does he know anyway?
