Hi Guys. I am sorry for the drive-by, but things here are really stressful. DH works for Bear Stearns, and we still don't know whether he's going to have a job or not after the takeover. AND all of our retirement was in Bear (It's practically impossible if you work on Wall street for your stock holdings NOT to be in your company, since they give you stock as a bonus, then make it next to impossible to sell it while you still work for the company :headache: )

Anyway, Everyone's outfits look awesome.

Happy Birthday Tessa!! :cool1:

Teresa  - I hope everything ends up OK.

Sorry I'm not being very active. We leave in 31 days, and I haven't even sewn all week with this stuff going on....

what age/size are you looking for?

We have made a few... in maybe a 6 or 8... For a little boy. Looks like a fishing vest and we made rice bags in the shape of fish for the weights. You can heat up the rice bags in the microwave for a calming warmth.

The 1st one we made was from a safari/ cargo style shirt that had pockets already on it. We just cut the arms out and hemmed the raw edge. Then we folded the bottom up and sewed vertical lines up making pockets on front and back. In there we could fit heavy washers or rice bags.

A little girl in my son's class wore an apron with ribbons sewn on the front. They tied washers painted to look like flowers to the apron front with the ribbons.

This sounds as clear as mud... Good luck. (I imagine you could modify an actual fishing vest...) Walmart had kid sizes last year.

I'm just curious...What are weighted vests used for? What is their purpose? I have never heard of such a thing.

Wendy, I've made a couple for Ds(6) when he was younger. Here's the pattern I used:

Here's the Mickey weighted vest I made for Disneyland last spring...he never needed it, he did real good with out-woo hoo!!! :cool1:

Happy Birthday Tessa!!!:cutie:  Have fun at Build A Bear!:flower3: Heather, you truly are a Princess (or 'Rella) hanging in there till Midnight!princess:

Hi Everyone..thanks so much for your interest and ideas! I too am a Pediatric Occupational Therapist. Where I work, we use the weighted vests to give more input to the body to help it to know where it is in space. Also, in general, deep pressure like that has a calming affect. Think about the days when your tiny baby was upset and you swaddeled it tightly or how when you feel sick how you like to crawl under a nice heavy comforter or something - kind of the same idea. I also use it for children who need to work on strengthening - its something we can call our "adventure vest" and then do our activities like an obstacle course or something and it provides that weight that helps build up muscle. The weighted vests that are available like at Soutpaw Enterprizes are UGLY and even the smallest one always seems to big for the younger kiddo's. My supervisor said there must be a better solution out there than those $120 vests!!! I agreed, and knew exactly where to post my question!! It would be great to have one in a fun print for sure - then our "adventures" would be even more exciting!!! lol!!!

Thanks again, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TESSA :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

South Paw's prices are outrageous! I agree that they aren't worth the expense, especially when the kids outgrow them!

The In Your Pocket design/pattern was developed by a Mom with a son who has PDD. The pattern may seem expensive, but given how many you can create from it-it's not a bad deal. You can tailor & adjust the length on each kiddo as well. It may take more time to create them, but you can make them more fun & custom for the kids. Then it's not as much of a chore for them.

JMO, the "homemade" weights just aren't the same. Especially if you have a tactile defensive kiddo. Rice, Modeling Clay etc aren't fun to wear & I think cause more problems than they are worth. That's been our experience anyway. In Your Pocket Designs sells the weights premade, I believe. Or call her & talk to her about it.

good luck with the adventure & please post your creations.

You trace it onto a paper similar to interfacing. I used sweedish tracing paper that I picked up at the sewing expo - sold by birchstreetclothing.com - but I heard they also sell it with the interfacing (called pattern ease I think?) at JoAnn. I'm not sure if it helps but here are pictures of my patterns that I traced. The first line is the original trace of the size I want - then I added a 3/8" seam allowance on all sides except folds. It isn't too bad once you get started. What pattern did you get? The Easter dress I posted today was made with the farbenmix pattern Vida.

Thanks for the info and the pics that was very helpful. I opened the pattern and was just totally taken abakc. I just folded it back up and said "Maybe later." I do like that i will be able to do different sizes later if I want to. I bought the pattern that is named "Week". I was torn between the Vida pattern and the one I got.

This is the pic from the website.

I think what you are referring to is called "ductal carcinoma in situ." It is a very small tumor that hasn't broken out of the milk duct yet. I know because this is what I had. My doctor did what he called a lumpectomy and I call a chunkectomy! He took a wedge shaped piece from my breast. He was able to get the entire tumor with clear margins all around. They biopsied it and did other tests. Mine was "estrogen receptive."

I had radiation and took a drug called tamoxifen for 2 years. They also did a bone scan and other tests just to make sure it hadn't "escaped." It has been five years now and has not come back.

It is very scary while it is happening, but it sounds like you have a very good support system for her. It is manageable because it is in the very early stages!

Thank you for the information! It's good to hear from somone that has been through it. I'm glad you are ok now!

I just asked my DH (he's a Medical Physicist in diagnostic radiology), and it sounds like she's diagnosed with DCIS (Ductal Carcinoma In Situ), which is considered a pre-cancerous condition. It is VERY treatable, and has a very high survivor rate and the prognosis for DCIS is usually very good. Anyway, here is a website that my dh showed me that explains DCIS...

http://www.webmd.com/cancer/brain-c...-information-nci-pdq-ductal-carcinoma-in-situ

I am sorry that your SIL is going through this....and I will be keeping you, her and the family in my prayers. I can definitely understand being worried ...cancer is such an evil thing!!
Thank you for that! I'm reading through the information right now!
I am laughing so hard I can hardly breathe! (in a oh-I-can't-believe-how-sweet-that-is kind of way)Thanks I needed that! That is just the sweetest thing!! Tessa is going to love it!!! I dare say Lydia will be mighty impressed too!!! I can't wait until someone gets home so I can show them!!!
Quoting myself!!

I showed Lydia the picture and she LOVED it. I dare say she has her own little crush on Luke!

Oh man, this must be such a stressful time!

I know! I have been looking for 2 1/2 years now for some and still no luck!

Does your Walmart have a fabric department? It usually shows up around Halloween.

Enabler Alert.

Our Walmart had the Pirate of Caribbean pillowcases on clearance. They were marked $2.50 each, but rang up for $.25 each :cool1: We will actually use them as pillowcases in our camper, but some of you might like them for material. I was only able to buy what we needed, but maybe some of you will be as lucky

Happy Birthday Tessa!

Are Luke and Tessa getting married?

They say they are!

I'm thinking for the wedding pictures, everyone should do the "Luke" and stand on one leg with your leg crossed. Lydia has been practicing!

I sort of wrote a trip report, link in siggy.

Allright, here is a picture of a work in progress. This is going on the front of a tank-top for the daughter of a fellow dis'er. There is still loads of satin-stitching and hand embroidery that needs to be done. Mulan is holding an umbrella, but I still need to embroider the handle, and spokes. I also need to add the jade comb and flower to her hair. Her face will also be done by hand. Isn't she pretty so far though?

And here is a picture of the top I am working on for Edie. Not Disney, but pretty nonetheless. I think this is the Mod Girls fabric from Sis Boom.

I had a multi quote but got tired and no idea where it went!

Teresa, I am sorry to hear about your SIL. I will be praying for her and with as far back as I just read I am hoping hers will be just the same and gone pretty easily (if that makes sense).

Would love to see pictures of the BAB skirt! I just love BAB!

NO! No fabric department anymore! I about cried a month ago when i walked in and it was half gone. Ours sold a ton of fabric. DH's (that he works at) still has one but is ALWAYS crappy and we went searching for some baseball fabric today and found another walmart with fabric left. But in the 9 years he has worked there he has never seen the Minnie Dot fabric. Even asked them to order it the past 2 years! He is my little fabric hunter! (although he hates it!)

I have been watching this on the news and I feel for your family. I hope the buy out turns out good in the end for you guys!

Very pretty indeed!!! I love your Mulan. I really love Mulan, and we just don't see much of her.

And, Edie's top is gorgeous!!1

When you post pictures though, don't use the th_ we want to see nice big pictures of your work!!! All the more to admire it!!! :thumbsup2

I thought your husband worked at Walmart. Wow, that is really bad that he can't get them to get it in. When I see it again, I will let you know for sure! So far, they haven't closed too many of the fabric departments around us. The one in our town has a rather small selection, but it's better than nothing I guess. The ladies running it are less than friendly though. Every time I find a piece of fabric that I know is on clearance and ask them if it's cheaper than what it's marked, the lady says, "I DOUBT it." EVERY stinking time!!! You would think she would know that I know what I'm talking about by now!!!

When Heather and I went there a few weeks ago, she bought some Diago fabric, that had a big square cut out of the corner! They discounted that piece thank goodness. But, the last time I was there, there was a sign up on the cutting table that said that fabric was to be sold by the yard, not by the inch, and that they were NOT to cut squares out of the fabric for customers! I found that pretty funny.

oh I had an awesome walmart price too on monday. went to Walmart to pick up a yard of fabric -yes and I only got the yard I needed - and jojo saw a swimsuit that was brown zebra with a pineapple on it. it was marked regular $8 something. It rang up as a $1. I pretended I didn't even see it ring up as that!!! oh yeah got a cute summer swisuit new for a $1. Thank goodness it fit when I got home!

Okay, we had fun making this "card"--it was my first real attempt at making something with my new Cricut (other than helping Sugarbees with something). It was fun! Nothing is too good for my future DIL ;) :lmao:

th_IMG_0099-1.jpg

How cute! I was determined that I did not need a Cricut, afterall I have a Sizzix and love the Girls Are Weird die cut font. Well, while home on maternity leave I caught an informercial for the Cricut and now I really want one. I spent the rest of the day day-dreaming of all the great projects I could "whip up" with the machine. Of course the next question is the basic or the newer one?

I will keep your DH and family in my thoughts. My DH and I both work for financial firms and know how touch-and-go it can be sometimes... missed earnings, reduced dividends, subprime, market timing charges... and that's just the last couple of years :rotfl: Oh well, after 12 years in the industry I don't know if either of us would know anything else to do.

You guys are too fast! I can't keep up! And I lost my multiquote, but Happy Birthday Tessa!!!princess:

Anyway, I've finally finished the underdress for the peanuts dress!:woohoo: I was up until 2 am last night and still had some finishing touches to do today.

Here it is by itself and twirling (of course!)

I sort of wrote a trip report, link in siggy.

I was engaged to my "best boy" by the time I was two. (He called me his "best girl"...)Our mom's were best friends and we were born 6 months apart! We were deeply in love...he told his parents when we were four that he and I would be living in their home so mom and dad would have to move down the street.

We held hands everywhere we went, he opened car doors for me, helped me buckle my car seat and tied my shoes for me! He got VERY upset one day when he saw my sister HIT me! He told his mother to talk to my mother about it before he had to "step in"...we were about five then.

Alas...we hit 7 and everything changed. We were on the teeter totter at my house and he broke it to me that we couldn't get married. He said he couldn't marry me b/c he was going to be Magnum PI...

*sniffle*

I cried my heart out. Went in and told my sister and his older brother. They made him say he'd marry me...and he did. Reluctantly!

I would just like to point out that even though he and I did not ever marry, he DID name his first daughter for me! He DID! We have the same middle name...even though his wife doesn't know where he got it, I sure do!

The boy carries a flame!

 ;)
