Back in 2006, we had a DVC Trivia Contest here on (what was at that time) the "new" Mousecellaneous Board. It had 100 questions (well, 101 were actually needed - but only the last 100 were counted).

The winner was Pklein09 (with 84 correct answers), second place went to DVC_John and third place went to Bom_Noite (they actually tied for 2nd with 81 correct, but John's entry was earlier and he thus won the tiebreaker).

Honorable Mention went to:
Deb & Bill
Dianeschlicht
Disneychelle
Diziadzi
Elijahpep
Govac24
Hematite153
Hoosiergirl
JamesD
Vascubaguy

For those of you who were not around the DIS in the spring of 2006, here is a link to the contest. - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1071461 -It ran for a month and then the winners were announced.

I have taken down the page with the answers for a few days for those who would like to try the questions without any influence (like the correct answers), but will restore that post soon. Please do not send any answers to the email account listed for the contest, as I don't even recall who received those (I think it was Caskbill) - but no one will receive them now. If you want to post answers in this thread, please feel free to do so! :teeth:

DW and I are preparing to downsize to smaller personal accommodations (meaning from our home of the past 37 years into something a bit smaller) and during this ongoing process, I have come across a bunch of DVC promotional materials from the mid-1990's. We purchased in June 1993 (seems like yesterday) and, being a world-class packrat, I have several boxes of old Disney and DVC materials. My first Disney trip was to DL in summer 1958 when I was almost 11 and I still have quite a bit of memorabilia from that trip including ticket booklets (with some A and B tickets still intact) and a map of DL that hung on my wall in various houses we've lived in from 1958 until just recently.

There won't be any prizes or tags for these questions, but please feel free play along just to humor me ( :teeth: ) and give me something to do over the coming weeks (or until I run out of questions).

Today's DVC trivia question is from 1995. At that time Members (and potential members) were provided with information about Disney Vacation Club Cruises. The brochure describes the DVC cruise options to places like Alaska, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas. Obviously, this was before the advent of the Disney Cruise Line.

So today's question is what Cruise Line (or lines) provided the arrangements for these early DVC cruise options ?? How many total cruise options were available at this time?

Enjoy! :)

Premier Cruise Line (The Big Red Boat)

I think there were 2. A three days on ship four days at WDW or four days on ship three at WDW

Most people called it The Big Red Boat but it was actually operated by Premier Cruise Lines. They offered 2 different week long land/sea packages. You could choose either 3day/4sea package - OR - 4day/3sea package.

Let me say when DCL got their own vessels in 1998...big improvement in my opinion!

The "Big Red Boat" was one of the participants and they did offer 3 and 4 day Bahama cruises to DVC members. There was no DVC option for a 7 day package, since DVC members could reserve the land portion thru MS.

The answers are correct, but not complete. Thanks to both for getting this off to a good (but incomplete) start! :)

Just a side note - the original 1991 DVC logo included three mountains, palm trees, water, a big yellow Mickey head and a red boat. The red boat was gone by 1993 and a mountain disappeared in 1995 (many suspected it was used in the construction of BWV which opened in 1996) - leaving the yellow Mickey, water and two mountains which have now given way to the current "world" (tongue in cheek) class logo.

What other cruise line(s) participated in the DVC cruise program back in 1995?

We use our "Premier Cruiseline" waffle cotton bathrobes regularly. They've travelled all around the world with us ... likely a few times over.

Wasn't Holland the provider for the AK cruises?

Yep! Holland America did offer Alaskan cruises for DVC members among others.

What other cruise destinations were part of the DVC/Holland America Cruise line options? Were there any other cruise lines offering DVC cruises at that time?

:teeth:

1995
Holland American 7 & 10 day Caribbean, 7 day AK
Premier 3 & 4 day Bahamas
Carnival 3, 4 & 7 day Bahama/Caribbean.

1996 was the same except Carnival was added for AK.

The Holland American only outside staterooms, Premier Outside & suites and Carnival inside, outside and suites. For an adult the costs ranged from 71 points for an inside Carnival 3 night to 302 for the outside Holland 10 day.

Select options from the DVC Adventure Travel include 387 per for a Safari, 244 Salmon River Rafting trip & Biking the Rockies 5 nigths 218 pts.

Dean is correct for the DVC Cruise options. :teeth:

Holland America, Premier (Big Red Boat) and Carnival were the providers for cruises as outlined by Dean above.

The next trivia question is for the same time period. Dean has already offered a partial list of the DVC Adventure Travel options available. What other Adventure tours were offered at that time for DVC members using points? (Hint: there were 14 DVC options)

Also, are there any answers for the 2006 DVC Trivia Challenge questions? :)

I've got 15 on my list and at first glance they all look the same for 1995-7 but since I have it in front of me, I'll give someone else a chance to answer.

Hi! DH and I had a blast going through those trivia questions! Very cool to see it resurrected....even if it's just for fun!

:wave2:

Alright, if no one is going to bite, let me post the info.

1995-96 list
Tanzania Safari 13 day/10 night (not sure how that worked) 387 pts
Galapagos 9 nights 279 pts
Costa Rica 9 nights 317 pts
Rafting trips
Rogue River . 3Night 108
Grand Canyon 7 nights 341
Main Salmon River/camping 5N 194
Main Salmon River/Lodges 5N 244
Middle Fork Salm 5N 214
Biking Trips (4-5N)
CAN Rockies/Inns 218
Can Rockies/camping 125
CA Wine country 226
Tuscany 283
Loire France 283
Shenandoah 170
SE Vermont 186
There is another list for 96 alone which has the same options but a few of the items are more expensive.
For 97 the list is essentially the same.
98 was the same it appears except the galapagos exited the list.

The 1998 cruise list had DCL for 3/4 day Bahamas, HA for AK and Carnival for 3/4/7 caribbean.
1999 was DCL 3/4 day and HA AK only.

We were cleaning out our storage unit this weekend and I came across the 1995 RCI book listing Disney's vacation club resort (before the name changed to OKW). What I find more interesting is that they had a Bed & Breakfast escape list AND a separate CC list.

That is the list from the brochure I have also. The only difference is that the Canadian Rockies bike trips were all included as one category leaving the list numbered as 14 - the trip was described as Cozy Inns and Lodges or Camping under the stars!

I'll try to post another trivia question from the past again tomorrow and will probably restore the link to the answers to the 2006 contest.

Thanks, Dean. :)

NEW QUESTION(S)!

These are from the summer of 1999.

1). The Boardwalk had a number of "carts" offering a variety of attractions like games, crepe-on-a-stick, face painting, make-your-own-art, a caricature artist and also a Fortune Teller using palm and Tarot card readings. What was the name of the Fortune Teller who "Sees ALL, Knows ALL, Tells SOME"?

2). OKW had a new program called the "Room Ready" offer where guests received something if their room as NOT ready when they checked-in at the resort. What did they receive during this offer?

Was that Zoltar of the movie BIG fame? Not sure about question 2.

No - not Zoltar.

Answers will be posted tomorrow unless someone gets them in the meantime.

I think there's an Esmerelda at DL and I'm pretty sure there was a Zortar machine there at one time.

From page 9 of Vacation Magic - Vol 8, No 3, 1999:

1). "Visit Madame Morgana, the fortune teller of Disney's Boardwalk, who 'Sees ALL, Knows ALL, Tells SOME' ". This was a real person and not a machine.

From page 8 of Vacation Magic - Vol 8 , No 3, 1999:

2). "If your room is not ready when you check-in at the Resort, the Front Desk Host or Hostess will give you a special signed card which you can then take to Hank's Rent-'n-Return for a FREE 1/2 hour boat rental."

New questions will be posted later! :)

Today's question(s):

1). The original title for housekeeping services for stays 7 days or less was "Trash & Tidy". This was later changed to "Trash & Towel". What year was this change first made.

2). In 1999, the HHI Resort added three new "characters" who each hosted a resort program. While these "characters" are no longer hosting "Cooking with Matilda", "Longview Island Garden Socials", and "Fireside Socials" - what were their names? (Hint: none were named "Matilda" :) )

i don't know any of the answers (if there was an award for "trivia challenged", i would win it by a landslide :)), but i'm so enjoying this thread.
thank you for taking the time to do this :thumbsup2

Thanks! I enjoy looking these old items up and must admit I would not have gotten them all right without my old copies of Vacation Magic which was the first version of what has now become Disney Files magazine.

Vacation Magic was heavy on news from the DVC resorts with a little other Disney "information" sprinkled through the magazine. It featured little tidbits like the answers to these questions along with photos and articles about the resorts and DVC members. Over the years, many here have lamented the changes in DVC and the loss of Vacation Magic is one of those things often mentioned.

I wish I had saved all of my old copies, but do still have enough left to generate a few more trivia questions. The issues I do have are from 1993 - 1999 and, for that reason, focus on OKW, VB, HHI and BWV since those resorts were DVC during those years.

To borrow a quote from Walt's opening speech at Disneyland: "Here, age relives fond memories of the past ..."

These are all fond memories!

Thanks again! :teeth:

BTW - the link to the answers to the 2006 DVC Trivia Contest has been restored - so everyone is welcome to review those questions along with the correct answers - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?p=12650390#post12650390

Enjoy!
