Disappointed with upkeep of rooms at SSR

strange odor upon checkin in studio and food on floor quite visible in 1 bedroom area, a/c broken. Got manager involved, asked for new room. Could not get one as it was January 2nd, so would have to wait till next day. Housekeeping merely sprayed carpet a few times with something and left. The air was repaired. Manager did compensate us and we do appreciate that. We weren't beligerent, but were very clear how disappointed we were with condition of room upon check in. We did not ask for anything. We wanted manager to know the condition of room. Later we have found that: kitchen sink faucet is very loose, needs a new one. Several kitchen knobs are loose; shower grout is looking dingy; kitchen table has several ink 'art work' written onto it. We did tell the manager this and he said to request a new table. We did. Of course we don't have a new table. Pretty disappointed in this room. Love location, not condition of room. We stayed at a gorgeous Hampton Inn this summer that would put this to shame.

And this resort was just newly rehabbed. This clearly indicates a lack of cleaning and maintenance that a newly rehabbed resort can get in that condition.

It really burns me that DVC will not step up make guests that damage furniture pay for it.

If we are going to be treated like a timeshare, then do what other timeshares do, make the guest responsible for damages.

We were just in the Springs on Thursday night and our room was spotless. Pristine even. Made me fall in love with SSR all over again.

we were just in 2 different 2bedrooms at the grandstand and 1 had obviously not been cleaned prior to us getting it. It appeared maybe just trash and towels and bed linens as all counters, stove and table was filthy, the toiletries in the master were used and all dated items (schedules, etc) were 2weeks out of date. I had to write everything down on a paper towel to hand over to the front desk too as I didn't have any paper with me and there was none in the room. The front desk CM was less than helpful or even nice. We checked in at 8am and the room wasn't released until after 6pm too so I'm thinking they just released it without cleaning it as it was so late.

2nd room was the normal 'clean' that we see there at SSR but not hotel clean. Wrappers, etc left in places, not a good cleaning job in the showers. And DH asked me on the last day if I had given the kids hershey kisses because there were a bunch under the sofa and wrappers plus wrappers next to the bed in the 2nd bedroom. Those weren't from our family!

Makes me wonder about guests. Do people really bother not picking up after themselves anymore?!

You'd think we all turned into a bunch of lazy prima donnas.

Maybe it is because I maintain a vacation condo with my dad. I've been on the receiving end of an apartment that other guests left looking like crap. Had a toilet that was used and not flushed! Made us so mad. This is our vacation home. And some people think if they pay money for it then it must come with a full 24/7 cleaning crew. And of course their money will pay for the replacement of furniture even if it barely covers the increased gas&electric bill from their stay.

Because of that, we always try to leave our timeshares in decent shape for housekeeping and report maintenance issues while we're in the room (not after checkout). That way the problems can be fixed with the least amount of time involved.

They definitely get trashed. I saw one that had happened at SSR, it probably looked like the apartment you were talking about.

There were even holes in the walls.

We noticed that in the park yesterday. We ate at the Tall Tales Saloon (Pecos Bill's) and saw so many people just leave their trays of garbage or the garbage just strewn on the table.

I keep telling myself my mileage may vary but with my first two trips to SSR being bad, I am kinda dreading our trip there in 4 days... :guilty:

But the kids are VERY excited to stay there for their first time, so I am going to ride their enthusiasm coat tails and hope all goes well :cool1:

I hope everything is great, actually SSR is the "only" DVC resort we have never had problems with.

I think it will be great. Every place has it's share of problems. SSR's are more limited to their housekeeping issues than anything else, IMO. And as long as you know that in advance, you can keep your expectations low. ;)

I am optimistic..... I mean I booked it 3 months ago and didn't even wait-list anything else... :lmao:

I just checked in here yesterday. I didn't have any cleanliness issues just issues with the way the rooms are designed. This resort isn't that old. They have a tiny "key" locked safe. It isn't big enough to hold my camera. Every resort I have stayed in at Disney, DVC or regular, has had a bigger safe. It also has a regular tube tv. The layout of the 1 bedroom is strange. The bathroom in particular.

I switch to AKV on Tuesday. I know they are more up to date.

Spent 8 nights at SSR over Christmas/New Year's. Our room was immaculate! No issues at all. We were in a studio in the Grandstand.

Love the regular tube TV, truly makes me feel at home. :goodvibes

Unclean rooms can happen anywhere. We met up with some friends last March in Vegas and stayed at the Venetian - so a pretty nice hotel. Our friends upgraded their room - so it was supposed to be a "nicer" room. They walked in and it smelled funny. My friend went to put her stuff on the bed and noticed the carpeting was soaking wet on the side of the bed... that is when they realized what the smell was... someone had thrown up (I guess it is Vegas!) and housekeeping "tried" to clean it up - but it was still wet and smelly. Yuck!

So - they got a new room pronto. :)

I think Disney DVC rooms are just used so much that they are bound to wear down faster...unfortunate. Also - I believe that most people who rent hotel rooms don't pick up so well (they feel they are paying for someone else to do that)... and with the great number of rooms that mousekeeping needs to clean before the next group arrives - I think they are able to do the basics - and miss cleaning behind doors and getting the wrappers under beds.

So - here's to hoping my first visit to SSR in March ends up with a decent room. :)

I think this is just an issue of popularity of room. I stayed at SSR, specifically requesting a view of DTD, which was beautiful- I rec'd congress park GV & it was definitely worn but I knew it was not a brand new resort, or at least that bldg wasn't. I probably just noticed it a bit more bc I had come from AKV & couldn't get the last night of my reservation so I switched to SSR. I would definitely still stay again, it's worth it for the view & large accommodations. We did have a much longer wait for buses at SSR vs AKV but I heard that rumor prior so it wasn't a big deal.

Ahhh, the old tube TV argument.

As with any timeshare, every upgrade is paid for by members who already bought, and did not have to be resold. (well unless the developer screws up enough hat they have to eat the bill). At the time SSR was first opened, tube TV's were the right choice. (No Disney resort had flat screens). AKV was the first DVC to get flat screens from the first day. And since disney used TV furniture, the upgrade is more expensive than just a TV swap..

Plus I think I heard an upgrade is scheduled in the near future...

Patience! We just got flat screens at OKW and SSR isn't that old, all in due time. I have to laugh at the importance people give to what type of TV's are in the villas, I guess TV's not that important to me on vacation!

considering there are no decent channels to watch anyway, the type of TV makes no difference to me either.

Ain't that the truth. There was nothing on TV the past few days when we were there. You'd think Disney would broadcast the marathon and half marathon on their own channels. Nothing but last year's marathons and half marathons over and over.
