Disappointed in Teppan Edo

I just wanted to put this out there. We ate at Teppan Edo last week and the food was OK. The performance was very good, but the service itself was below what I would expect. There were 5 of us: me, DH, DS7, DS6 and DD2. My main beef, aside from what I mentioned above, is that they charged me $5.00 for a juice box. A regular old tiny Minute Maid apple juice box. I know they can charge whatever they want, but come on. At every other sit down meal, they charged me less than $3.00. And, when it came on a separate check, the waiter had the gall to ask me if I would be tipping on the juice box. I had already tipped on the rest of the meal - $30! Seriously? Maybe I'm out of line to be so outraged.

Wow!

I know I've been there so many times and always promise to never go back, which I kept to promise for years until this year our parents went with us. We wanted them to try it out. The service is always exceptional I think. But the food isnt that great to be charging the prices they are charging. And this happens every time....

We are on the deluxe plan, and we're seated with another family of 4. We all order individually. The other family of 4 decides to order 2 main dishes and share. Guess what? We ended up getting the same amount of noodles, the same amount of chicken and beef as they did.

How is it that we're paying for a full entree each and they're giving us the same amount of food as the two people splitting their meals? Shouldnt each 2 person in their party get equal to one?

They got their bill and it came up to 100 something dollars. Our bill comes up to 250 :mad::mad: they basically got fed the same amount of food for less than half the cost.

We're on the dining plan, so we didnt make a big deal of it. We didnt complain we were just really upset and vowed to never go back. We still tipped 20% cause it's probably not the cook's or server's fault, but rather management that basically give them the instructions like this.

I can honestly say I'd never go back, never, even if I do, I'd split my meal with another person and pay out pocket....

Teppan Edo has never done anything for me. I can eat at a Teppan-yaki restaurant at home that has better food and a lower price. I'm not going to go to Disney and pay more for a worse experience than I can get a mile from my house.

I couldn't agree more. While I know that not everyone is lucky enough to have a hibachi restaurant closer to them and for them I can understand the desire to go to TE However, anyone who has one closer to them (in our case we have 6 really good ones and a couple ok ones within a 30 min. drive) is much better off going to the ones closer to home. Much better menus, much better food quality and much better prices than what TE offers.

We found the food extremely bland, the show was just ok and our portions were tiny compared to others at our table. It gets good reviews but we will never return.

I agree...not to mention we had to wait over an hour the last time we went!!! I know that ADR's are kinda like call ahead seating, but they were so unorganized!! We spent a big chunk of our evening in there and honestly, I am not at Disney just to eat!!

Just wanted to chime in that this place isn't for us.

At home we frequent the local hibatchi restaurants such as benihana, miyako and fuji at least once, if not twice per month.

Since we are fans, we assumed in WDW it would be far better. We waited 40 minutes past our ADR, the wait staff was not friendly and the food--i can barely give a "meh" rating to. We were very disappointed, and have found much better meal options!!!

Ought oh...this is making me regret my ADR here in October. May have to think of another one. We have several hibachi places around here that we have been to. Have to give this one some thought.

This is good to know. We never been there, but thanks for your input. Personally, I can't believe he asked you if you were going to tip on the juice box. I would have FLAT OUT SAID, "NO"!

I agree our hibachi places here are sooo much better.. That waiter was out of line to ask for a tip on the juice box when you already tipped.. I would have defanitely told him what was on my mind in the kindest manner I could and then asked for a manager w/o making a huge fuss..

We will never go back..

I agree. And the fact the Teppan Edo doesn't do fried rice is ludicrous to me.

I have to say that our family loves this place. We have had some "attitude" issues occasionally, but mostly good service and good food IMO. I would guess that if you get to eat at this type of restaurant often, its not the place for you. If you don't tend to eat out much (like us) or you don't have one of these in your area, you will probably love it as we do. Its seriously a not to miss place for us.

The only complaint I do have is that the desert for kids (on the ddp) is a pre-packaged cookie. Its kind of ridiculous that the child can't get a sccop of ice cream on the plan.

This is very wrong. Especially since they load up the cooking cart with food based on what was ordered, basically he split YOUR food amongst those people. Nice of you to share like that!! :rolleyes1

Totally agree, it has sadly gone downhill! Used to love it, but, the last time we were there the chef forgot to cook the chicken for 2 people who had ordered chicken/shrimp and burned my scallops! It is no longer in our must do list :sad2:

Its the soft serve ice cream, not scoops.

I personally love TE. But thats cause I have nothing to compare it to. I've never been to teppanyaki places in my hometown. But one place just opened up down the street from me....i'll be sure to check it out, just to see how it compares to TE. IF you have been to many teppanyaki/hibachi places in your home town, I would skip TE to be honest. But if you've never been, definitely check it out.

Being Asian myself, I took a look at their menu and thought "Oh, they made all this stuff up just for us tourists!"

That's one of the reasons why I haven't eaten there.

On a side note, most teppanyaki/hibachi places are chinese owned hence the fried rice. Shhhhh...u didn't hear it from me ;)

Lol! Thats why I find it amusing when I read how upset people are that there is no fried rice at teppan edo. LMAO.

Teppan Edo has been a must-do for us for many years. We just love the hibachi food overall. But I think the more recent dining plan changes, which led to menu changes at Teppan Edo, have resulted in a worse overall experience there. You used to get a salad as part of the entree and now you have to pay like $6 extra for that. And the number of options on the menu has been limited. After this summer's experience, I think I am finally over this place and won't be going back for awhile. Its not that it is bad, but there are a lot of other places to eat. I personally enjoy the variety of options at Benihana and you get much more for your money. Its funny about the fried rice comment since that is not japanese food, but I still LOVE it and always get it at hibachi places when available, so yes, I don't wish Teppan Edo had it.

Overall I think the food is OK, not spectacular. I would never tell anyone not to go there, and on the dining plan it is a good value, but if you have other similar places near to your home where you like to eat, I think you can safely skip it.

Dang, that sucks, and what do you do, especially when the other party is sitting right there next to you? "Uh, excuse me, but you have our food." Just would be very uncomfortable. :headache: TE screwed that up, and put you in an awkward situation, not to mention you paying for 4 meals ot out 6 and only getting half the food.

I'm normally more of a lurker than a poster (sorry about the stalking, fellow DISers :rolleyes1), but I couldn't resist sharing when I read this post. We had a very similar experience there two years ago, except my group of 6 was sitting with two off-duty TE employees. They split a meal, while we all ordered individually. Just so happened that I ordered the same meal that they did. They ended up with more food on their plates than I did! At the end of the meal, they pulled out employee discount cards and paid very little for their meal! Ouch. Haven't been back there since.

In all fairness, it was actually enough food for me (it's not like I need to eat the giant portions that I usually do at WDW), but the principle of it really turned me off.
