Disappointed in Teppan Edo

I used to work at a Teppanyaki Restaurant in Durham, NC. For what its worth, Teppan restaurants usually charge a "split fee" (which was $8 7 years ago at this particular place) which includes the full soup, salad, vegetable and shrimp 'app', and rice for each person. One couldn't sit and eat off other's plates without paying for it. I do know from speaking to other servers that the policy is the same at all Teppan restaurants in our area.

Hopefully it's the same at WDW.

Off subject, but at the restaurant where I worked, they made fried rice right on the grill as the meats were cooking. It was done with a little frozen veg, steamed rice, egg, butter and soy, and the chef would make a show of cracking and egg in half over his spatula in mid-air. It's such an integral part of the shows around here that I'm very surprised that they don't do it at WDW. :confused3

My family loves hibachi. We have several very close to home that are great. So we thought TE would be great. Very basic and very bland. I'll give the guy points for making the onion slices into Mickey Mouse, but that's it. It's on my "never again" list.

I'm normally more of a lurker than a poster (sorry about the stalking, fellow DISers :rolleyes1), but I couldn't resist sharing when I read this post. We had a very similar experience there two years ago, except my group of 6 was sitting with two off-duty TE employees. They split a meal, while we all ordered individually. Just so happened that I ordered the same meal that they did. They ended up with more food on their plates than I did! At the end of the meal, they pulled out employee discount cards and paid very little for their meal! Ouch. Haven't been back there since.

In all fairness, it was actually enough food for me (it's not like I need to eat the giant portions that I usually do at WDW), but the principle of it really turned me off.
I happened to us each time we went the last half dozen times. That's why we stopped going for years, until this past March. We knew they were splitting their meal cause they told the server when they ordered that they were going to order one entree and share it. So they werent eating off each other's plate but had their own individual plate. And like you the other party got more portions of everything than us.

Dang, that sucks, and what do you do, especially when the other party is sitting right there next to you? "Uh, excuse me, but you have our food." Just would be very uncomfortable. :headache: TE screwed that up, and put you in an awkward situation, not to mention you paying for 4 meals ot out 6 and only getting half the food.

Yup you hit it right on. It's not as if the other party is grabbing food from our plate, so we cant blame them. The cook was distributing the food. We didnt want to cause a commotion either, so it was really uncomfortable. I could feel my ears get hot when we got the bill and they paid about 120 including tips  then our bill came up to about 250 not including tips yet. If we didnt have the dinning plan it would have hurt to pay almost 300 out of pocket when the other party paid half that.

It was an awkward situation and I dont think complaining would help cause we already ate the meal. The best solution is never to go back, that should speak volumes

We just had lunch there for the first time. We were paying out of pocket and thought the prices were truly outrageous -- and they don't take Tables in Wonderland. Plus, although others in our party like it, personally, I find hibachi "cuisine" to be pretty much sliced and diced slumgullion over rice.

Some in our party had the entrees, but some of us just ordered the sushi appetizers -- not much selection (and they would not give us the option of ordering from the sushi menu at Tokyo Dining), but the sushi sufficed.

We enjoyed the "show" and had a delightful chef, but eating there once was more than enough. We much prefer Tokyo Dining and their more extensive sushi and sashimi selection.

Overall I think the food is OK, not spectacular. I would never tell anyone not to go there, and on the dining plan it is a good value, but if you have other similar places near to your home where you like to eat, I think you can safely skip it.

We enjoy Teppan Edo and it is almost at must-do level for my family, but I'd second this. We enjoy it precisely because we don't have a hibachi restaurant in our neck of the woods and seeking them out on vacation has become something of a family tradition.

TE is good but not great and I certainly wouldn't be happy with the price OOP relative to what is offered (the no soup/salad irks me), but my kids love it so we make a point of fitting TE in about every other trip. If we could easily get our hibachi fix at home we wouldn't bother with Teppan Edo on our Disney trips.

We used to like this place a lot but after our last two experiences....NOT SO MUCH! Our most recent visit was last November and our family of 4 sat with two parties of two. The couple on the side of me were clearly on a date & were acting worse than a couple of teens in heat (they had to be in their 50's). My teens were totally "grossed out", they were completely loud & obnoxious and made everyone feel uncomfortable at the table including the chef who kept making faces & tried his best to "break up their show" while performing his show. The guy, who was sitting right next to me, was so rude that he started making demands to the chef that he not place any of his veggies near any meats as he was a vegan. The chef was clearly annoyed by this guy's tone as were all of us at the table so I just couldn't help myself and ordered all steak, knowing very well it was going to go up his butt :). The chef cracked a smile and the guy got so annoyed that he turned his back to me which ended up being a blessing for all of us. As for the food, it was really bland this time and we all agreed that we wouldn't be returning for a while.
