Solid weekend for Sequels and well known IP ahead. Moana 2 trending towards $200M+ domestic, Wicked with another $100M weekend, and Gladiator 2 holding steady and will prob get around $40M.

Should easily break the 5 day Thanksgiving weekend record of $315M from 2018

The death of theaters has been greatly exaggerated.
It’s still dying, this year despite the successes of certain films, is projected to be $1B less than last year in revenue. Some of that may be less volume with the strikes so we’ll see with 2025.

It’s like linear, there’s a reducing market but it can still provide returns. Right now, Sequels and IP (this year Wizard of Oz) rule the day. All 10 of the current top at the domestic box office are sequels. Wicked will soon jump into the top 10 after this weekend. Moana 2 will also be in the top 10 after 5 days.

Box Office: ‘Moana 2’ Serves Up Huge $57.5M Wednesday, Heads for Historic $175M-Plus Launch

Moanapocalypse has begun at the Thanksgiving box office, where the animated sequel is set to serve up the biggest opening of all time for the holiday (sorry, 'Frozen').

Ummm, why is she using "apocalypse" in a positive sense? That isn't what it means...Something like "Moanamania" would be better.

I think I read somewhere that this would be a first, although it's been trending in this direction for awhile so it was inevitably going to happen one year.

It would be the first if it ended that way. It won’t with Wicked likely to take one of the 10 spots. The only remaining films with a chance at getting into the top 10 domestically are Sonic 3 and Mufasa.

I guess Wicked doesn’t count even though, well… eh, nevermind.
Yeah, you could put a film adaptation of a 21 year old musical, that’s an adaptation of a nearly 30 year old fan fiction based in the universe of a beloved 85 year old movie adaptation of a 124 year old book into whatever category you want to.

I would say the death of non-conventional theaters is greatly exaggerated. Our EPIC theaters, with the amenities, hold up pretty well in terms of attendance. There are some films that practically demand the EPIC XL experience, but we often go to the smaller theaters at EPIC on Tuesdays for $6 and still get the full recliners, etc.

AMC appears to have done pretty well this past week.

"The Company roared to its highest domestic revenue (admissions revenue plus food and beverage, including merchandise) on the weekend before Thanksgiving in AMC’s 104-year history."

The plural of anecdote is not data. That said:

We went to the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor last night for a White Christmas Sing-Along.

When you enter the theater, you are handed a goodie bag of props to use during the show (instructions below). Many attendees dress up in costume or wearing film-related gear. (I saw several different Columbia Inn sweaters, and a couple of Wallace and Davis t-shirts.) The event starts 30 minutes before show time, when an organist plays a variety of Christmas carols, with lyrics on the screen. The theater was packed, and it was a great time.

What a wonderful idea!

Theaters are having a great weekend with 3 tentpole films to fill seats.

Doesn’t change that for the first 9 months of the year AMC Theaters was down nearly 14% in attendance. Cinemark theaters also down 11% in attendance for the year. Haven’t checked others but a weekend blip does not save the overall trend of less people going to the movie theaters.

Moana 2 is going to blow away what Frozen 2 did for an opening weekend, it’s still trending for less people to see it than Frozen 2.

I put a lot of the blame for theatres failing on all streaming services. They want their cake and to eat it too. Studios want the money from the theater but also want the subscriptions to their services. Due to that they have quick to put new films on their services that people now opt to wait til it's they can watch it at home.

IMO they should be going back to how it used to be when DVDs where a thing. Let it be at the theater but don't release it to streaming for 8 months to a year later.

Theater ticket sales have been diminishing long before the streaming wave. Ticket sales peaked in 2002 and have been reducing ever since. Streaming certainly added to the downward trend for sure.

At this point anything longer than a few months before going to streaming probably isn’t going to matter much in terms of box office success.

Various theaters in N.A. are doing the Wicked lyrics overlay sing-along starting December 25th. I think this is going to become commoner in theater releases. For the First Time in Forever methodology in your local theaters could inject new life into the congregational experiences which a home theater doesn't offer.
