Dis Dieters October 09 (week 4 page 19 post 272)

Rachel, losing weight is likes maths, you put so much energy in and take so much energy out in a day. To lose weight you have to put less energy in or use up more energy. It sounds like one of these is too high.

The sensible foods to eat basically are the ones which have not been processed, ie natural foods and meals prepared from scratch. It is all about changing the way you eat and not really a diet as such.

You don't say how you are measuring your food intake. I just do simple calorie counting and use the Diet and Exercise Assistant on my ipod Touch to keep track of calories and exercise. You can get this programme for your desktop as well. What I like about it is that it works out your calorie intake for your height and age for you and by when you want your weight loss. As I have set a long target date of next June I can still eat a substantial amount of calories without feeling hungry. It also adjusts the calorie allowance when you do any exercise and allows you more that day as you have used more energy up. Your body needs so much energy just to function.

The other thing about the programme is that you use its data base of foods but you can also add your own products. As well as calories, you input the nutrients in the food. It automatically works out how much of each nutrient you require in a day and at the end of the day you can see if you have a green light for each nutrient or a red light. A red light means you have exceeded the allowance on that particular nutrient for the day. When you exceed an allowance that nutrient is not needed so will be converted to fat (which is just stored up energy) for a later date. Your body starts to burn the fat when you have not put enough energy in for the day so will use up its reserves to continue to function properly.

The main culprit in excess energy is usually fat. You do need a certain amount of fat in your diet to function, primarily it provides insulation both to protect your body organs and also to keep you warm but when you exceed the recommended amount that is when your body will convert it to stored up energy (fat). A lot of foods that have been processed can have a high fat content without seeing what you are eating it is hard to say if your food has a high fat content. What you can do is look at the labels and check yourself.

It may be that you are eating too much on a night and should be eating more during the day when your body will need more energy. If you think about it on a night the majority of us are just sitting by the tv and if you are putting a whole load of energy in on an evening other than the basic functions your body is running there isn't a whole load of energy required. However during the day when most people are more active your body is constantly burning up energy as you are moving around.

Try to think about what you are actually putting in your body, think of what use it is, ie very basically proteins for repairs, carbs for moving about, fat for providing insulation, fibre to keep everything internally moving out :)

I hope that has helped Rachel, if you want to lose the weight you can do it, you have the power. Go for it.:thumbsup2

And after all that I have to say I have STS this week but not bothered as I am in my 'normal' band for my height/age and just 4 lbs off my target.:goodvibes

Good luck to everyone on their weigh in's this week.

I'd like to loose another 2 stone, but I never like to take it in such large amounts. So at present I'd aim to loose another half stone by January, which will be hard I know, with Christmas and all that! :rotfl2:

I may take you up on the smaller portions and see how I get on :) I think on that one though, it would only be my evening meal I'd have to make smaller. I have cereal for breakfast, sometimes Weatabix, for lunch I either have soup or a sandwich with a yoghurt for dessert. Evening meals are the ones which do vary, as it depends what time I arrive in after my exercise classes. Maybe I'm eating too much after exercise and at a later time in the day?? The only problem is, I cannot eat before I do exercise, as this makes me feel very unwell.

Argh....so hard!!
Hi Rachel. I had a real problem losing weight a few years ago - however hard I tried I couldn't move it. Like you, I ate sensibly, went to the gym regularly and it was just so depressing!!! I had hit 40 and assumed it must be something to do with that...

Anyway, long story short, my DH tried cutting out carbs as he wanted to lose a few pounds, I joined in and the weight started to shift! I couldn't believe it!!! It turned out that over time, I had developed a wheat allergy and all the pasta, bread and cereal I was eating (however small the amounts) kept me bloated and heavy... So, I now keep my diet as gluten-free as possible and losing weight is straightforward - well, as far as it can be!!! I feel so much better in myself - way more energy etc - and generally life is good... It might be worth a try... :goodvibes

Well done to those who lost weight and those that have STS remember your scales will probably just not be showing the loss if it isn't a full lb.:thumbsup2

I lost 2 lbs this week which I am happy with.

Though I have got a terrific urge to go out for a slap up meal.:)

well done Bev :thumbsup2

Thanks Nat.

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:8 days Nat & Joh :banana::banana::banana: are you both excited yet?

As Nat says, we are both beyond excited - only 1 week to go

I put on a lb this week  I'm not surprised though, I've been ill all week and when I'm ill I eat loads

Good luck everyone next week :thumbsup2

Hope you're feeling better soon Jen and good luck next week :)

Hey guys,

Sorry I've not been about on the thread much. I've taken a two week break (so far) from weighing myself each week. I decided this as I was beginning to get myself very down on nothing actually happening or a couple of lbs creeping back on.

At the moment I'm not in the correct mind-set to keep weighing in each week, as I feel it will not help me out much. I will continue to check the thread and report in on how I'm feeling/doing as I've quite enjoyed the support and it's been good to see all your journeys since January.

I'm still continuing to watch what I eat, as I've still lost a total of 1 stone since starting out in January and I don't wish to put this weight back on at all. But for now, I'll be an observer on this thread and hopefully I can continue to give support to you all as you keep going on your journey!!

I will be back as a regular weigh-in person, I'm just not sure when.

I'd also like to add a massive thank-you to Natalie for keeping the thread running and lending tons of support to everyone! :)

I totally understand - we look forward to welcoming you back when you're ready. You have to be in the right frame of mind and, if you're not there, you're just going to be fighting against yourself all the time

STS for me this week.

Well done Claire

Result Bev :)

I have STS this week despite my efforts not to eat too much bad stuff, but I have been unwell which has made me much less energetic. I am not too concerned as at least I haven't gained any weight. Just 4 lbs to lose now to reach my next target of 10 and a half stone. Some brilliant advice on the thread this week - I try and stick to the plan where I take in less energy than I need to function, but often this leaves me really lethargic and tired. I am also trying to cut out bread, so thanks guys for all the advice.

That computer programme sounds really useful.

Good luck everyone for any weigh-ins this week, and for a healthy eating week ahead.:wizard:

I could never understand why, within a few days of coming home from Florida I'd start to get blocked up in my sinuses and my ears. I was convinced I was allergic to something in the house / bed and spent a fortune changing pillows duvets etc.,

When I started this diet back in November I decided to give up bread for a while and within a week my sinuses had totally cleared up and it was only then that I realised that, as it's so rubbish :rotfl:, I never ate bread in Florida so the "problem" when I got home was because I was having bread again. I also noticed that I didn't feel as sluggish and stopped snoring straight away

.....I am also trying to cut out bread, ....

I'd seriously give it a go - even if you decided to just try it for say two weeks I bet you'd notice an improvement in your weight loss and overall health.

Good luck to every one this week

Wow!!! That's another great side effect then, Jakki! :thumbsup2

I'm so glad I eventually realised the connection. In fact, this (in conjunction with several other factors) convinced my DD's partner (now a doctor) that I had coeliac disease! TBH I dismissed this at first BUT, at his instigation, I recently had a blood test which seemed to confirm his opinion and, as a result, so many health mysteries have fallen into place... I don't know if I ever would've worked it out (I was misdiagnosed with IBS for YEARS!!!) without trying a carb-free diet so it definitely worked for me in more ways than one... :thumbsup2

What a shame that your supposed IBS wasn't investigated properly :sad2: Well done to Joe for spotting it though !

OMG don't get me started, Nat!!! My GP is beyond useless, honestly - if she can't throw anti-depressants your way, she really doesn't want to know... :sad2:

I was unwell a few years ago with persistent flu-like symptoms - absolutely no energy, just wanted to lie down all the time, incredibly tired, couldn't do anything without massive waves of nausea etc etc. Anyway, it just dragged on and on. She was convinced I had ME FGS :faint: but it took an emergency dental visit to discover (via x rays) that severely impacted sinuses were the root of my problems!!! Two courses of antibiotics later and some over the counter sinus drugs and I was 100%!!!

 - thank god you found out the real reason. It just goes to show that what we put into our body seriously affects how we function.

I lost 0.7kg this week and I'm now 1.5kg off target. I've revised it slightly as my neck is starting to look a bit crepey :rolleyes1 so I don't want to loose much more for now. I might go for some serious toning over the next couple of months and then see from there.

I'm off to WW tomorrow and as I'm going from an evening class to a morning class so I'm bound to have lost on the scales :rotfl:

Wow guys, thank-you for all the great advice. I must apologise for not responding sooner, please accept this and I just want to let you all know, I was never ignoring the comments, it's just I'm away this week, so I haven't caught the boards much. I've managed to hi-jack my brothers netbook for a couple of minutes so thought I'd leave a quick hello and thank-you!

Once I'm back home I shall read everything through in full and take in the details more. I'm going to try out the programme for my desktop also if I can find it, sounds like monitoring what I put inside me maybe the best way forward for me.

I'm sure there will be plenty more questions from me at the weekend once I'm back online correctly. For now, I'm getting in as much exercise as is possible at Center Parcs...I've felt like a fish for the last two days, never been out of the pool and water rapids! :lmao:

Again, thanks for the advice, shall report in more once home!
