Snappy, thanks for asking! We are in better shape than in Maryann's area. I am in the mountains of NH so not right on the coast. The tides won't be a problem. The worst we are anticipating is that the basement could get some water damage if the drains can't handle the amount of rain we get. Stores in town are running low on stuff though. It seems that lots of tourists from NY and CT and RI are choosing to extend their stay and ride out the storm here. Makes sense to me.

Maryann - good luck getting your husband home! Are you in an area that is evacauting? Or are you staying put?

Good morning everyone. Just checking in, its like the calm before the storm.

Well I heard from dh from the airport lounge. His new phone is not working, hmm, I will stay out of that mess he created. Did enough screaming about that with ds21 before he left.

He made it to chicago and got on a flight to Hartford Conn. They got him a rent a car which he has to return to our local airport tomm. I told him the bridges will likely be closed. I dont think he was listening as usual. He did ask me to check on the 2 ferrys. One is non operation (The one Linda took), but the one closer to us is running, so that may be an option. I cant communicate with him because of his phone issues.

Ds19 is at the state college orientation, ds23 is spending the day with his godson and his mom since they were evacuated from the next county. guess they must live closer to the water there?? His friends grandma lives in our town.

They cancelled our church for tomm and ds19 comm. college is cancelled monday and also I looked at dh work website and supposedly they most likely will be closed mon. too.

Its going to be a LONG couple of days. I am sure we will lose power somewhere along the time frame.

Laurie,Lisa and Sha - guess you sistas are all pros at this. I only did one of these really bad ones once before. Pre kids too.

Also just got a letter in the mail that they cancelled my jan. endo visit again. Will call next week. This is the 3rd time I am rescheduling this because of them. So frustrating.

GTAGWTA.

All too familiar, Maryann. We have become THE place to evacuate for our New Orleans friends and family.

Good that your wiring is underground Mary Ann. Ours is as well. Came in handy for Gustav in 2008 that walloped baton rouge. We got power back in 4 days, others due to trees were without power for weeks. At least we dont have to worry about storm surge though, just wind and rising water. We ARE above sea level.

Worked some long shifts but now getting into the storm. Fascinating coverage. DH and kids did most of the yard prep and shopping while I was at work, so we're all set, I think. (He reported the store wasn't even busy at 11am so I don't know if people shopped earlier or what.) Ready to hunker down! Loved the tips, Laurie. Especially the ax. :rotfl2: (True, but would never have thought of it!) We are on the coast so we may wind up with some local flooding and loss of power, downed trees, etc. (Nice to know I can still Dis a bit from my iPhine, lol.) Crews were out in force this morning trimming as many potentially hazardous trees as they could. The last hurricane here was in 1991. I totally remember it because I got one of my dogs literally right then and with his first peek at the ocean from my lap I opened my car window and a sea spray came in and soaked us! We always joked about it but he loved the ocean anyway.

We have had some tough news here on this thread this week (and some good news). I've been thinking about you all, especially in light of the storm and our shared difficulties and celebrations. It's so nice to have this group here. Love to you all. :grouphug: Stay safe. Maryann, I hope your DH makes it home safely. Will be following news coverage of your area tonight.

I really hope that no one is impacted by Irene badly!! sounds like all here are getting well prepared, I think that is half the battle.
Lisa, you have been my inspiration all along and you continue to be. I am so very happy you are back to swimming, and enjoying things, and so happy you will be on your holiday soon  I continue to plan our trip at the end on Nov. beginning of Dec but I know we won't be able to bring our grand daughters, I know it would be too much for me to cope with. I so wish our daughter in law could see her way to coming with us, but it sounds 99.9% sure she won't. It will still be special to be there with our grand son though.
Cheryldan it's so good to see your posting here again!! Snappy, Pea-n-me, Luvmarypoppins, Sha, and Patsmom, you are all my friends and support system! thankyou!
Did some retail therapy.... hubby and I went and got a new 55 inch high def, 3D tv and home theater system. It`s the new type of 3D that is the same as in the theaters, so the glasses from there work.....and the ones from places in Disneyland that use them, not that I would ever borrow any from there!! lol...

Good morning

Hope everyone is doing okay with the storm. I haven't seen much coverage from it in the last 24 hours. In regards to the power... our lines are above ground still. A bit of an eye sore to me when you look at the beautiful sunsets and of course when the storms hit us criss crossing the state a few years back. You would think that alone would've inspired the city/county to say "lets put these underground"... nope.

Hugs to all you wonderful ladies... there has been some tough news this week as Linda said. Lots of love and holding you ladies up in thoughts and prayers (always). And for the good news too.

Had a busy day yesterday, starting with taking my sister to work, the had to do 2 pages for a recipe book for a wedding shower, go to a baby shower (twin boys, and the blankets a friend made arrived the day before), came home got mom and headed to WDW to renew her AP and get a gift card as a gift for my friend who is getting married (I introduced her to her fiance, all because of Disney). It was POURING! luckily, we went to the Poly and had free valet with mom's handicap because I had white pants on :rotfl: Got the gift and picked up something for the Disney box that I will be using next weekend (Tigger coffee mug). Off to the wedding shower and then back to WDW. Not raining and got mom's AP. Decided to go into the park to find something that I wanted more than what I got earlier. Went to POC shop and nothing. Stopped in the Emporium and there it was. Pirate coffee mug. R. won't have to drink out of anything princessy.

Now, I haven't been into MK since June... and the bridge going into adventureland I swore was arched.... so I had to push mom up and down over it... it's flat now. I am sure this is a recent change or did I not notice it before???

Mom just came in... she thinks something is wrong with her tongue. She said it feels raw and is afraid it is cancer. Just to the tip. I don't know. She was kind of vague on what she is telling me. Told her I need more light to look at to give me a little bit. I know I have an additional pen light around here.

GAGWTA ladies.

I know I've been MIA this summer, but you are all always in my thoughts.

Welcome RealGrumpy

Smiley, I'm sorry to hear the latest dip on the roller coaster.

Thought I would check in here before we lose power... The wind and rain is really picking up here as predicted for mid-day and afternoon height of the storm. We usually lose power here in the woods even in bad T-storms, so we're resigned to it only being a matter of time. As prepared as we can be! (And I'm getting my internet fix while I can ;) ) Laurie, your insights to preparedness are invaluable...just as your support on breast cancer treatment has always been!! :grouphug:

Had my annual breast MRI a few weeks ago, all clear :thumbsup2
Been dealing with a neck strain thing, basically it's muscular. I took care of it at home at first with what I knew would be the primary doc's treatment: antiinflammatories and ice. Then I started seeing a chiropractor who is also an acupuncturist , at a place called Center for Integrative Medicine here, they have traditional western medicine providers as well as a slew of alternative/holistic/complementary therapies and providers available. Wonderful resource and people. Just a couple of chiro visits so far, has helped immensely. No acupuncture yet, maybe later.

DH and I are getting ready for a trip to Colorado again, mid-September. Some fishing on our own and also meeting up with family for a long weekend at some cabins in Estes Park. I can't wait :cloud9:

Thinking of you all!! XOXO

Ann, nice to see you! We are expecting to lose power later, also. It is very strange out - tropically warm and windy and rainy. Eerily quiet. I was out at 5am "inspecting", lol. Drove DH nuts watching coverage off and on during the night. :lmao: We'll see how the day goes. I just wanted to let you know that my annual MRIs have started to be denied coverage this year. BCBS! My docs appealed with no luck. I still have to as well but I'm going to do it when the kids go back to school - having too much fun this summer to think a lot about it. I also just had another cousin diagnosed this summer, too.

How are our friends to our south doing? :grouphug:

Ann, nice to see your update. I am also doing my internet surfing now in case we lose power later on! So far it is just a lot of rain up here in the mountains. No real wind yet but they still say we will get some this afternoon.

My husband is comforting himself by thinking about how many feet of snow this would be if it were a blizzard. At least we don't have to shovel rain.

I haven't posted in some time so I hope some of you remember me. I do read though so I am now up-to-date on all of you. Smiley - I'm thinking of you - there are always bumps in the road it seems - take good care of yourself and I hope the radiation will do its job well. Our Canadian strengths really kick in when we need them!

I'm so happy for you Cheryl - awesome news. Maryann - be safe throughout this storm. hope your DH will be coming home soon. I've been watching it and it seems to be calming down a bit over the NYC area. Linda - I know you live on the coast so I hope by the time it reaches Southern Ma. it will be weaker. Sha, have a wonderful Labor Day Weekend. Laurie - did you get to see your DD on Friday?

And for all the gals I did not mention please know I am always thinking of all of you and hoping for positive outcomes. I know it has been a difficult week for many of you.

No burden is too heavy when it is carried with love and from reading all your posts I think we have much of that in the sistas on this board.

Hugs,

Barbara

Barbara

Wow it is so great to hear from Barbara and Ann, it is so good to hear some of our long standing members.

Now if Laura and Merry would chime in, we would have completed the circle.

I did have a short pm from Laura in March, and she is doing ok, was planning a short trip as I remember.

Ann, my mom has had great results from both her chiropractor visits and accupuncture. Hope you do the same. And hope you enjoy your Colorado trip againt his year. It sounds divine:cloud9:

Hers two was muscle strain in the neck.

Barbara, My DH, our DD15 and I met DD21 and her boyfriend yesterday for lunch in New Orleans. We had not met him before and he was a little nervous about just showing up at our house apparently. Maybe now we broke the ice and they will come and stay sometime. It seems a bit serious there, who knows 21 is a very young age and he wants to be a neuro surgeon like his dad, so lots of schooling and hardwork ahead for this young man from new Jersey. DD21 did meet his parents and older brother during the summer, and they actually visited the Long Branch beach area that has been shown on the hurricane coverage some this morning.

Hope the electricity holds out a bit more. I forgot to add yesterday that email was by far the best communication avenue for us and our houseguests during Katrina. We only lost power for 8 hours at our house, but everyone was able to contact employers and figure out which city they were supposed to regroup in and what living arrangements would be. Also, we were able to make alternate school applications. We had multiple laptops going as well as our good old pc. Before the days of iphone and most of us were not using smart phones in 2005.

Obviously this won't work if you are using home computers and the electricity is out, but I am using my iphone now for email too. It is harder to see on the small screen but I am getting better it as time goes on.

Stay safe everyone.

GAGWTA!

Snappy, it is a great sugggestion about the phone and e-mail. Also texting. My lights are now flickering so I expect we will lose power. But I've been keeping the phones charged so we can communicate if need be!

I used to say I would prefer a good old fashioned blizzard to a hurricane! But Joe tells me that you don't have to shovel rain.

Happy to hear that those of you dealing with Irene are all safe. :thumbsup2

Hi Everyone!

Hi NH and Anne! Nice to hear from you two and also to hear that you are well!!! Stay that way! That's an order!;)

I hope all that are in the path of Irene are ok. I love all of the suggestions for preparation. Especially about cash Lisa. I didn't think that no power means no credit cards.

Lisa I am glad you are back to swimming. Hope your blood count is up.

Smiley- Oh Girlfriend! I am sorry for the bad news but I am happy you are sharing with us! We are here. Sometimes family needs a minute to digest news and then they are ready to fight with you. Give them a minute and you will see the change. You are a true Mother and Grandma. Thinking about the family. :grouphug: Hang in there Baby Girl!

Sha- I was laughing at the Princessy cups. That is so funny. How is your Mom? How many days?

LMP- How are you and did Hubby make it in? I can't believe they cancelled your appointment again. Really?

Snappy- Are you talking about Laura Belle and Mary Poppins? I remembered when I posted a while ago they were around. Nice you met your DD Bo! Seems like he is a Keeper.

PNM- Oh no about the power. I guess that is part of the aftermath. At least you are prepared. Stay safe.

Patsmom- Hope you are safe and doing well too.

Hang in there everyone and be safe!!

Sorry Linda.

Thank goodness for the iPhone, right?

No sexy posts for you (insider popdaddy joke from years ago), sorry to be cryptic.

Yes, Candy, Laura aka Laurabelle got us started on original thread I believe in 2005, after brainstorming with Linda aka PNM, in I think May 2005. Laura also started up the second thread with links to the original. Several, Merry, Ann, and myself were there from day one right along with them. Ann had just been diagnosed or was just going for the biopsy.

We have a lot if history here.

I always worry about losing touch with any or all of you. Very big fear of mine. Forget about those silly hurricanes I am talking about a real calamity here, lol.

Its funny, I can remember seeing the threads way back then and thinking it was nice that you ladies had a support group going here on the Dis. Never thought I would be joining you!

Irene is gone but she has left a mess behind her here in my area. My road is still officially closed due to heavy flooding. The river changed course and was running right down the road! Fortunately I am on high ground. The dirt road that serves as my driveway was washed out but we have already started repairs. And my drainage ditch is full of mud, which then flooded my lawn. But the water stayed out of the house and we have someone lined up to dig out the drainage ditch.

After the rain slowed, we took a walk around the block and were amazed at the damage by the river. We saw one seasonal camp slide into the river. Fortuantely it was unoccupied. They won't be rebuilding since all of the land went with it. I believe there were three seasonal residences lost in that area. The river shifted quite a bit. There were also folks evacuated by boat on my road. They were at the lower end closer to the highway. Most amazing thing to me is that except for about an hour in mid-afternoon, my lights stayed on!

Hope everyone else that was in Irene's path is OK. Has anyone heard from MaryAnn?

We are still without power - and I mean the whole region. It was an intersting night to say the least. We took a ride aroung late last night and it was just blackness everywhere. We holed up in the sunroon with flameless candles and the one radio we could pick up a station on. Had it on all night listening to a storm related talk show that people were calling from all over the eastern coast. Somehow then understood why we had no power as elecrical workers and linemen called in to explain it.

Really happy when the sun came up but then began my quest for a hot cup of coffee! :scared: i managed to manually light the gas stove (there's a firzt time for every thing I guess, lol - darned city girls!) to jeat water then pour it in loke a Melitta type. Problem is I usually use whole beans but I managed to find some ground Hazelnut in the freezer, tha kfully. My mother doesn't usually likd Hazel ut but she Was happy to get it this morning!

Speaking of freezer it looks as if we might be losing everything if we don't get power back soon. :guilty:

Charging phones has been a pain, too. We are noe using ghe car as our laptops are dead. I love my iphone but fhe battery life isn't great. But it is nice to have it.

I imagine MaryAnn is without power still also.

GAGWTA :umbrella: wish us luck tonight!!

Good afternoon ladies

Linda - I so feel your lack of electricity pain. We have finally gotten it restored. PTL! Hope you will be able to get yours back soon too.

PatsMom glad you have made it through the storm safely too

Ann - so nice to see you posting. Hope your neck heals quickly and hope you have a great trip to Colorado. Sounds fun and relaxing

Barbara - so nice to see you posting. That was such a lovely thing you said.

Laurie - glad you enjoyed your visit with your dd. Her bf sounds like a keeper. Seems motivated with his career and he is a Jersey boy on top of it all too!

Smiley - its good you have the trip to look forward to.

Grumpy - I am praying you are safe and that you have power now or soon. Our town really took a hit for sure. Some roads are still closed.

Candy - how is your ds driving doing?

Sha - hope mom is ok and glad you got all those things done and still those yet to do. I am sure you are in super planning mode for the week end. I am sure it will turn out jut wonderful!!

Lisa and Cheryl - thinking of you both sistas.

Well dh drove home from ct. as he missed the ferry. It still was decent weather. Then he took the rental car back to our local airport. Our power went out sunday around 10 am. We did eat lunch, played a long, long game of Monopoly. resorted to the flashlights and candles. Tried not to get on each others nerves. Grilled 4 lbs of chicken cutlets and a lb of bacon and 2 lbs of hamburger on the charcoal grill. Dont ask. Dh idea so it wouldnt go bad.

Dh didnt have to go to work till noon. Both ds had no classes. Ds23 had work. Our town is pretty devastated with lots of closed roads and downed trees. Nothing fell in our yard, just small branches, thank god.

I am really questioning the food in the refrig. as it was 24 hours. Reminds me of the summer when the refrig broke twice and I had to throw it all out then too. There are over 350,000 without power on the Island I think.

GTAGWTA. Keep safe everyone. Thinking of you all.
