Direct purchase point timeline question

Hi folks, I've been hit by add-onitis hard after my first trip to WDW. I'm debating buying some direct points at one of the Epcot resorts, but I'm confused about when points load.

My use year is June. If I call today and buy points, does that mean the points will be loading in June of this year in a few months, and must be used up by June of next year unless banked? Or, will I get points immediately that then must be used up by June of this year since it's too late to bank them?

You'll get them immediately, but you can also call in for a courtesy banking of those points even after the banking deadline. It's one of the benefits of buying direct.

Does that mean I'll get points right away, and then get more points come June, meaning I potentially get double points if I manage to bank them? Will I only be paying this year's dues though?

Basically ... if I buy now vs after June, am I getting some completely free points?

Thanks!

Yes, and it won't be a problem to bank them. Talk to your guide to confirm. You will only pay this year's dues - and they'll be prorated from the date you buy through 12/31. So, if you are in the market, definitely buy before June.

Thanks a lot! I better get researching then.

I should add that this is the case at every resort except VGF. At VGF, the new building is not open yet so they have no 2021 points to sell. But everywhere else, a June UY purchase receives full 2021 points (good from 6/1/21 to 5/31/22 unless banked) as long as you buy before June.

Also, ask your guide which Epcot resorts have a June UY available. Probably all of them. Riviera for sure, but check just in case. They can't sell you points that they don't have.

When you buy direct, you get current UY points…the exception being the VGF points being sold for the new building which is not yet open.

Because you are looking at some of the sold out resort…BCV and BWV. they may or may not have June UY points in stock to sell you right now. They must have the 2021 points to go with it.

Now, if they do, you get the 2021 points, and will be allowed to bank them into the 2022 UY even though you are beyond the banking window.

You will pay prorated 2022 dues from the day you agree to buy for The remainder of the year. So, about 9 months.

YES! After I saw this post I called my guide to ask about UY for new members and 2021 points. She told me that since we are new our UY for Riviera would be Oct and I would get all 2021 points to use or bank immediately. I also wouldn't have to pay dues on 2021 points and would only pay pro-rated dues for 2022! That did impact the total cost of ownership a bit because we were planning to rent points for a July trip and now we could potentially use our own! Now just to wait on ROFR and see what they do. I'm tempted to just move forward with direct because I don't see any scenario where my contract passes but it would be just my luck..... LOL. And, TBH, my contract is so low that if it does pass, I'll be absolutely thrilled.

Just want to be sure that you know that if October is not a good UY for your usual/expected travel patterns, you can buy a different UY. Our UY of September was assigned to us by our guide as well, and now we realize we're fortunate because May through August are the months we are least likely to visit Orlando. Not all new buyers are so fortunate.

She did say that if we didn’t have a preference she would assign Oct but we would likely pick May or Aug.

I want to thank everybody who helped me with this question, I am now the proud owner of 150 points at Boardwalk! This is my first direct contract, and wow, it was quick, I had the points within 30 minutes of ending my call with the guide and immediately booked a trip with them. I'm also stoked to finally get that blue card! (I didn't think I would care ... but apparently I do.)

I want to say that members of this board are so, so well-informed, and things happened exactly as described. I basically got an extra 150 points from last year that I was able to bank, and did not even have to pay dues for. That definitely cuts the sting of the direct price tag a tad.
