Direct Purchase benefits announced!

Is this not illegal of them to do this? I will need to check but is this not spelled out in the deeds? This so wrong on so many points. This is only a way for Disney to make more money by driving down resale prices so they can then snatch up the cheap contracts with their ROFR and then sale them at market price with "full benefits"!!!

Why would it be illegal. You need to read your contract. These are perks they are taking away from resale members, which cam be taken away from all of us at anytime. You purchased points at a home resort. Period. Anything else is fair game.

Perhaps to some degree but Disney is a lot more invested in Aulani than the others. 300 cash rooms, 3 restaurants, wedding facilities, convention facilities. Their stake in Aulani goes much deeper than a couple hundred sold-out timeshare villas.

With regard to Vero and HHI, I don't disagree with Dean (much easier to envision those two sold off rather than a theme park resort) but I also don't know why DVC would consider getting rid of them either. Aside from the management fees received, it seems like those two resorts add value to the DVC product as a whole. The resorts don't seem substantial enough for another manager to want to pursue the business.

Perhaps in another 32 years Disney will find another home for the properties but until then it seems like a case of no harm, no foul. Owners pay for operations and upkeep and they give DVC two non-park destinations to market.

Good points, TJ and I agree. :thumbsup2

I agree nyck -
While our DVC guide didn't do an 'incredible' job of pointing out exactly what we were buying - she DID in fact go over the fact that what we were buying was the ability to vacation at our home resort - and as long as allowed - at other DVC resorts as well.

DVC would be making a terrible mistake to only allow members to stay at their home resort. That would take away all the 'WOW' factor from DVC IMHO.
We love the ability to stay at a different resort on every visit, see what they all have to offer - and say at the end of our trip "We liked it - but not sure we'll stay there again..." :lmao:

The only resort that was a totally different experience for us was Old Key West - we love it! We honestly didn't think we'd like it, and were kind of bummed when we decided to make a last minute trip over labor day last year and OKW was all that was available - BUT - we LOVED that resort, we will be back!

But yes - in no way shape or form is it illegal for this change to occur. Disney has every right to make a change that will positively effect their bottom line by resulting in more direct sales.

It also says to me that they are closer than what we all think to building a new resort! Can't wait for that one! New resorts are SO exciting! :goodvibes

OK you can't make a statement like that without details. What did you LOVE about that resort and what WOW factor did it have that the others didn't

The rooms are HUGE! The Balcony/deck is huge! We got to watch river otters frolicking on the banks of the river. I originally thought the theme was just a generic tropical theme - but it's not! We really felt like we had been transported to Key West! The resort is very laid back - not all the hustle and bustle of a resort like the Boardwalk! The pool was a lot of fun - and there were lizards everywhere! I know they are all over the place all around WDW - but we saw several different types at OKW.
The outdoor dining along the river was so nice!
The theme is far from generic!
Plus - we had a one bedroom and the Jacuzzi tubs at OKW are HUGE!!!
Neither one of us are light weights, yet both of us could sit comfortably in the jacuzzi! It was great!

It really does feel like a tropical paradise!

Next time we are definitely renting Sea Racers from the marina!

Thanks for answering, sounds like there is also a lot to do at OKW

People all look at using points for cruises as a waste, but that just depends on who you are. If you have already hit your "break even" point, how is it a waste of points? You are only paying for dues and I am not in this to make money anyway. I am not wanting to go through the hassle of renting my points, so if a cruise is what I want to do with my points this year so be it.I am only paying my dues, so the points values to me are what I make of it, not a dollar amount. That is the beauty of owning. If they took that away in the future that is fine too, but as long as I have that as an option I am happy. Also now that they are taking that away from resale folks I am happy so I can maybe exchange for a cruise even easier now. But I do understand that is a PERK and can be changed at anytime.
If you want to value your points so low that is your option. I prefer to look at the value I can get on the open market.

I quite agree with Dean the cruise option is an absolute rip off. In fact I consider that the likes of the disney collection is an absolute joke, how many people honestly book a room in say the yacht club during the week in say regular season for 45 points per night when a studio in the beach club villas is 16 points at the same time.
I find hard to believe people actually are even interested in stays at the moderates which are higher in points than any of the studios in DVC resorts. The icing on the cake really is the $95 booking fee added to the booking.

The nice thing about DVC is that there are options that are available, and are not requirements for members to use.

So for those who want to cruise, fine it is there, for now, lol. I really don't think any DVC Member actually chooses a Moderate over a DVC Resort, but may have distressed points to use, or have no availability for a desired travel date, and again it gives them options.

We all know, many of these options can go away (as they are doing for Resales in March) though.

So, let's keep the topic at hand as it relates to the announcement on Direct Purchase Benefits and let's not turn this into a debate. Thanks all! :)

When I bought in many years ago, they had just added the moderates to the Disney resort options. It was basically explained at that time that DVC recognized that no one was going to want to choose a moderate over a DVC property when they points were essentially the same. However, as Carol mentioned above, they were added as an option for those members who needed to use points before they expired and weren't able to get into a DVC property for whatever reason. We had a night to enjoy over Columbus day weekend this past October. We were planning the whole thing out last minute and weren't able to plan in advance. There was *nothing* available in a DVC studio for the night we would be there. Our only option was to try and grab a room in a moderate. Instead, we decided to shoot down to Vero for the night instead and were lucky enough to reserve one of the few remaining rooms there.

But it was touch and go for a bit.

We've only used our points for DVC stays so even if we were to buy resale, this doesn't seem to have much of an effect on us.

But what's next?

Maybe they'll make it so that you can only use your points in your Use Month. No, wait. They can't do that. Maybe they'll make it so that you can only use your points for 1BR units. No, wait. They can't do that.

And so on.

The point is that the things that they promised not to change, won't change, and we should never have been relying on anything else to not change.

Personally,

I think it will put a damper on resales, my question is, what's next? They already announced some MORE new ticket price increases.

I haven't looked at resaleprices, but it would seem that prices are going to shoot up until the change and then I think they'll drop.I agree with the poster who said that it will help Disney snatch up ROFR's

Anyone who is not prepared to own a timeshare they can't resale should at least consider getting out now. I think we can assume there will be further changes and that these changes will overall be to the negative. I think it's inevitable and always has been.

I doubt we'll see much increase though there may be more sales. My view is that prices will go down modestly though the higher cost options will come down more than the rest. For anyone looking to buy in this is a real opportunity because if they were looking to do so for the perks that are being segregated, this change will do them a favor and save them some money in the long run. I think the issue is going to be ebay and other private type sales where the buyer might be unaware and have expectations otherwise.

I used my points for POFQ for 1 night about 3 or 4 years ago. It wasn't that I sat down and said I'd rather stay at POFQ than a DVC, the issue was there were no DVC rooms available. I called 3 weeks out for mid October to add a Sunday night to a business trip. No rooms, any size. So I asked about moderates since I had some points in my account that I planned to bank. I believe it was 18 points. This was before the $95 fee, that may have changed my mind and I would have looked at CRO prices. But it is nice to have that option. But if I was buying now, I think I'd go resale for the lower price and not have the outside option.

Question...I recently booked PP for next week. There was no availability for VGC. I was not charged the $95 booking fee. Are there different rules for Disneyland Cali/

Yes, currently Disneyland trades are not charged the fee.
