Direct Price Increase Today

I would have loved to been in the room when these decisions were made. Just a morbid curiosity as to what goes into that process. Honestly, after 35 years in the business world, I don't think like the DVC folks.

I swear they are trying to make up for the losses of this past year all in the upcoming year. And I'm a bit fascinated to see how high they can go while reducing services. And saddened too. It's really not the direction I believe in for a company that built itself on service and "magic".

I don't feel so bad about my purchase last year now. I bought 300 points at Riviera and with the sale they were having my total was $45778.74 with zero down. Looking just now and the same contract is $8000 more. I have made a few principle payments on top of the monthly payment so I only owe $33k. My goal is to have it paid for by 2025.

This is the current offer ...
Disney's Riviera Resort
One-Time Costs

Purchase Price
$58,500.00
(300 Vacation Points x $195.00)

Closing Costs
$1,284.43
Savings
– $6,000
(Offer Ends Feb 5, 2021)3

Total One-Time Costs
$53,784.43

I think these price increases are intended to lower demand for these resorts.

I agree with this, accordingly, it is making RIV and ALU price more attractive.

Maybe I am missing something but doesn’t the price hike help current owners? It gives you something that has more value. The only negative is if you were going to buy direct and the common group think on this site was not to buy direct anyways.

I agree with this too...if you already own, you are happy, also shouldn't hike in direct price boost resale? For a lot of people, direct purchase is financially out of reach or making no financial sense, then only one option left, resale...

It’s fascinating to me that Disney still feels super confident in raising direct prices right now. I hope their sales plummet to unexpected lows. (I know, I’m bitter)

Maybe that's the point? I think they aren't trying to sell right now. They have no construction to back up RIV, so this is it for a while. They're not exactly in a hurry.

I see your point. I'm not so sure people are currently in a hurry to buy into this "less than magical" experience either, so perhaps prices don't even matter. Just charge whatever, and see where the chips fall.

I’m not so sure how they would expect to entice anyone to come back to the parks with all of the magic and perks that are disappearing. It’s a sad time for Disney. And we’re feeing the brunt of it.

There really has to be some super duper secret plan that no one is sharing because it is very strange to increase like this at this time. Just surprised.

Actually this is incredibly smart. You keep the increase quite on the resorts you don't want to sell and throw it through before people are making a final decision.

Now when everyone talks to their guide about adding on before the price increase next month the sold out resorts are already higher in price.

Whoever came up with this is doing a fairly good job.

Also said a while back thought a price increase was coming again in January. This January/February increase is going to be annual I think moving forward.

Aulani didn’t sell at the current price. Or any of its last 7 prices. So I’m not sure they care?
They didn't care about Aulani because pre-pandemic the resort was always somewhat near capacity. Can the same be said moving forward with a post pandemic & partly sold Riviera?

My guide actually told me about the increase early last week. When I told her I thought it was Feb she told me its 1/13 for the sold out resorts in case I was interested in them, so I don't think it was any big secret. It did make me jump on a small contract but now I don't know what to feel with all these bombs Disney is throwing our way.

Agree with all of that, but Aulani’s next 2ish years (excluding DVC) are probably bleak. Hawaii vacations are planned way out. So again, I go back to they know the prices are too high and don’t seem to care. I have a few speculative ideas as to why that might be but it’s very striking. The Riviera/AUL increase is about 3%, inflation is 2%, sales are down like 70%. Supply and demand is not the driver here.

Next time a guide tells you a tip like that feel free to leave that on these boards 👍👍 (and if you don’t want to mention it publicly I bet @pkrieger2287 would take your PM on the matter!)

There must be a playbook in Disney's possession created decades ago that dictates that whenever there is a severe economic crisis, you raise prices more than you would at other times. That is what happened after 9/11, during the early years of the Great Recession, and now during Covid.

I think Disney wanted to implement alot of changes and now is using covid as an excuse ME-EMH-AP in disneyland and now this increase I think thers more to come Fast pass - disney dining to mention a few it gives them and excuse to shut them down and reopen them with the changes

Lots of new DVC resale listings today. Coincidence or are people really PO'd at Disney? I know I feel like I got a kick in the gut and DH does too...and he doesn't usually react like I do.

Edit: I'm now washing floors two down and seven to go...grhhh :laundy: cleaning "therapy"
