Direct Exchange Thread for DVC Owners on Disboards

I was wondering why there was no catagory/thread that posted owners that wished to participate in direct exchanges with other DVC owners? Is this something that is prohibited on the Disboards site?

We have a whole board for that, not just a single thread.

Go to the DISboard's DVC-Rent/Trade board.

If you want to post something, be sure you read all the posting rules for that board as there are specific requirements.

Yes, just follow the posting guidelines from the sticky at the top of the page.

We have three categories for TRADES. Read the sticky post and follow the links to the TRADES definitions where you'll find specific information about which trade category to use and what type of trade you can post.

All rent/trade threads first go to a validation queue where they are reviewed and processed before they actually post to the board. This is all explained in the "Required Reading" sticky threads on the board.

I think a big reason why you are not seeing many or any actual trades is that a reciprocal trade requires both parties to transfer twice (1-in, 1-out) and that is one more transfer than Disney allows us (per year). Not impossible depending on use years, but darn near impossible.

This is probably my biggest gripe with DVC. I think this policy only serves Disney by stressing people into buying more points to get the 11 month window at another resort.

Not necessarily, a BCV owner could make a reservation in the name of a BWV owner and vice versa. But, if there is a point differential in those reservations, then a price or other exchange (transfer of points, etc) would have to be agreed upon. And actually finding owners at those two particular resorts that want to stay at the other may be difficult, as both are popular resorts and many owners bought at those particular resorts in order to utilize the 11 month window, not to stay at a different resort.

I hope it works out for the OP, but there will be details to be discussed between the two parties.

I hadn't thought about that scenario... Interesting. A little like renting points, but not.

Sure wish Disney would just allow two transfers per year... it would make it so much easier for members to do real (non commercial) trades.

Hi Rob! I have to read the sticky's yet, but I would feel funny just kinda announcing out there "BWV Owner willing to ressie a boardwalk view for a HHI summer ressie". I would feel better if owner's registered for the exchange board so you know people would be in good standing before dealing with them. Just some of my concerns.

How do we go to DVC to request 2 transfers per contract. That doesn't seem ridiculous. Maybe have the first transfer free with the second one for small fee.
It's sure help out.

Also, the R/T board is great but it needs to be segmented more into the different categories. It's a pain to sort through.

There is nothing in the POS that would allow DVC to collect a fee for a transfer.

I think the only way to categorize the R/T would be to break it into separate sub-boards, which probably isn't a great idea.

Example- I am a BWV owner. I actually wanted ressies at ALK for F&W. I'm going to have to change rooms because I couldn't get what I wanted ( hopefully my waitlist will come through, though) I would have been happy to "trade" resorts back when this would have been possible ( I would have made an 11 mo BWV ressie for what I wanted at AKL ). Of course, now it's too late. But, if there was a safe way to do it, it would be a great perk.

What you are asking for already exists on the Rent/Trade Forum.

This category is for use by DVC owners ONLY. This is similar to "Trade Offered" except the request is being made by a DVC owner wishing to trade a DVC Resort Reservation for either (1) a non-DVC resort reservation, or (2) a different DVC-Resort reservation (essentially wishing to swap one DVC-Reservation for another).

* Open-ended trades are allowed meaning that as a DVC owner, you do not have to have a current DVC-Reservation already made, and the non-DVC resort (or DVC-Resort) you are requesting does not have to have a current reservation already made. If there is no current DVC-Resort reservation already made, then you may post the "Trade Wanted" request any time on the board. You may want to do this a year or more ahead of your desired vacation dates in order to give owners at the non-DVC resorts time to schedule their particular resort.

There are posting rules that apply to this category, so those of you who want to trade DVC reservations have a bit of homework to do to make sure your offer/request makes it through the validation software.

I think the problem is that these requests are all lumped into the same site : rent/trade. Would it be possible to have a separate catagory, listing, however you want to phrase it so that it would be a totally different category, link, thread. Having all rent and trade requests in the same "pot" doesn't help those that want only to "trade".

I agree and I think some of the people trying to Transfer points to fellow members would like separate catagories too. I don't know how many "transfer" threads have replies about renting a BWV std view during F&W or VWL during Xmas decoration season.

First and foremost, the moderators are correct, the "Trade Wanted" and "Trade Offered" threads already provides DVC members with this wonderful ability for 2 DVC members to accomplish a "Home Swap" by taking advantage of each others 11-month window. This would allow all DVC members an opportunity to stay at almost any resort they wish during any time of year - any difference in points could be rented at a fair pre-determined price or accomplished with a SINGLE 1-time transfer between the 2 members.

Personally, I believe the problem is simple. The vast majority of members have no clue that a "Home Swap" capability is available! I suspect the category names "Trade Offered" and "Trade Wanted" are simply confusing and do not properly describe the fantastic potential for this type of "Direct Exchange." I believe most DVC members would have no idea they could find a "Home Swap" capability in a forum entitled "Rent/Trade."

If there was a separate forum or even a more descriptively advertised thread for the "Direct Exchange" that BWV Dreamin is suggesting, I sincerely believe it would provide a fantasic perk for DISboard members and would become one of the hottest forum on the DISboards. Two DVC members exchanging reservations has certainly got to be a lot safer than renting points to a total stranger!

The whole reason that the "Trade Wanted" and "Trade Offered" forums reap little or no result is simply because the vast majority of DVC and Disboard Members have NO IDEA that a "Home Swap" can be accomplished there. As a result, nobody looks at those threads and VERY few members request trades there because of the obvious lack of responses.

The reason I have been quite about this for so long if simple. I have tremendous respect and gratitude for all the hard work provided by our wonderful moderators like WebmasterDoc, Caskbill, Chuck S and CarolMN - where would we be without them - nowhere!

So I am very hesitant to support a new idea or forum where somebody else (our already overworked moderators) would be required to do all the work. I would love to see a "survey" thread asking DVC members if they are aware that "Home Swaps" or "Direct Exchanges" are available through the "Trade Wanted" and "Trade Offered" boards. I would love to see these boards advertised more effectively so Disboard members can take advantage of this terrific capability. I would love to see a separate forum called "Home Swaps" so more members would know where to look.

Unfortunately, I am not computer literate enough or even authorized to do any of those things and I do not feel it's proper to simply plant more work on our moderators. So I'm hoping that this thread really takes off and is viewed by many DISboard members - hopfully that will begin to draw some attention to what I'm sure could become an extremely popular and successful forum.

Maybe a new "Home Swap" forum should only be made available to DISboard members who make an annual contribution to the DISboards - this fee would offset the additional work involved in creating and maintaining a new forum. I'm sure many DVC members would be delighted to contribute $15 or $20 a year in exchange for the ability to acquire successful "Home Swaps."

Thank you Dave for saying everything I wanted to say but couldn't find the words to do it!!! Please, please, mods, lets give this a chance. I am open to however it could be done, it just needs to change from its current format. It needs to be "singled out" so that everyone can see it loud and clear.

Due to the costs involved with having more boards, there would need to be considerable activity to justify a special 'swap' board.

While contributions to the DISboards is always appreciated, remember that all the webmasters and moderators of the Rent/Trade and DVC boards are volunteers and do not receive any compensation in any way, so this would be a heavier work load on people who volunteer their time already.

If anyone wants to create a poll and post it to see what kind of interest there would be, by all means feel free to do so. The DVC-Mousecellaneous board would probably be the best selection as that is the most active of all the DVC-boards here on the DIS.

Also we have some pretty sophisticated software programs (written by myself) that is used to process the Rent/Trade board, which automates a number of features including automatic PM's, checking thread bumps, and so on. If a 'swap' board was created new programs would be required.

Checking the history of all R/T board submissions so far for 2008, the number of posts in any of the three 'TRADE' categories is quite small compared to the other categories.

We could entertain some possibilities if there is enough interest. Perhaps renaming the Rent/Trade board to Rent/Trade/Swap board. It would also be easier to just create a new 'swap' category rather than a whole new 'swap' board. If someone wants to create a poll we'd be glad to look at the results.

FYI, the moderators on the Rent/Trade board are myself, WebmasterDoc, and LisaS

ChuckS and CarolMN moderate the regular DVC-boards, along with myself, JimC, and CarolAnnC. They do not have anything to do with the R/T board.
