We hadn't actually intended to eat at the Portobello Yacht Club this trip. Our scheduled restaurant that night was Pucks Upstairs. But thanks to a private party taking up the entire restaurant, we weren't able to get in. But the quick-thinking Mrs U immediately thought of Portobello and after a call from the manager at Pucks to the manager at Portobello, we were able to get in w/o an ADR.
So a brisk walk thru Pleasure Island later, we arrived at the restaurant. And it was nice to be back. The early version of Portobello was definately more "nautical" in look and feel. Now, there is a distinct Italian look and feel to the place--which seems fair since Portobello is essentially an upscale Italian restaurant. No spaghetti and meatballs here--.
I wish I could say that Portobello has a good beer list. Unfortunatley--they don't. I settled on a Peroni, while Mrs U had a glass of wine from a pretty good wine list. We also got to sample the "house" sangria--if you like that kind of wine, this was pretty good.
For appetizers, we decided to split a margherita Pizza. It had a plum tomato sauce, mozerella, and basil. Pretty basic, but very good. And as usually happens in such "splits" of an appetizer, Uncleromulus always seems to wind up with more slices than Mrs U. That's good too!!
For her entree, Mrs U selected one of the listed Chefs specials. It was Swordfish Siciliana, charcol grilled and served with mascarpone smashed red bliss potatoes with a red wine reduction. My entree was off the regular menu-Grouper Carciofi. This was also charcol grilled, and came with artichokes, roasted potatos, and a lemon white wine sauce. Both were good sized portions and very good. However--I must here point out here that there was a couple with their daughter sitting next to us (the tables at Portobello, while not Alfredos close, are fairly close together) and I was able to get a birds-eye look at the Filet Gorgonzola he'd ordered. It was as pretty a piece of Black Angus filet as I've seen in awhile and tho I didn't actually taste it, I think next time I might order that.
We both ordered the same dessert-Panna Cotta, with strawberrys. And this came with an added touch-a swirl of spearmint running thru the Panna Cotta. Never saw that before, but it was just enough to give it a special and interesting taste.
Our meal at Portobello made us forget completely the disappointment at not being able to get into Pucks. And seeing the place crowded and full was nice too!
Next up: California Grill. (But not today--both my fingers are tired).
