We hadn't actually intended to eat at the Portobello Yacht Club this trip. Our scheduled restaurant that night was Pucks Upstairs. But thanks to a private party taking up the entire restaurant, we weren't able to get in. But the quick-thinking Mrs U immediately thought of Portobello and after a call from the manager at Pucks to the manager at Portobello, we were able to get in w/o an ADR.
So a brisk walk thru Pleasure Island later, we arrived at the restaurant. And it was nice to be back. The early version of Portobello was definately more "nautical" in look and feel. Now, there is a distinct Italian look and feel to the place--which seems fair since Portobello is essentially an upscale Italian restaurant. No spaghetti and meatballs here--.
I wish I could say that Portobello has a good beer list. Unfortunatley--they don't. I settled on a Peroni, while Mrs U had a glass of wine from a pretty good wine list. We also got to sample the "house" sangria--if you like that kind of wine, this was pretty good.
For appetizers, we decided to split a margherita Pizza. It had a plum tomato sauce, mozerella, and basil. Pretty basic, but very good. And as usually happens in such "splits" of an appetizer, Uncleromulus always seems to wind up with more slices than Mrs U. That's good too!!
For her entree, Mrs U selected one of the listed Chefs specials. It was Swordfish Siciliana, charcol grilled and served with mascarpone smashed red bliss potatoes with a red wine reduction. My entree was off the regular menu-Grouper Carciofi. This was also charcol grilled, and came with artichokes, roasted potatos, and a lemon white wine sauce. Both were good sized portions and very good. However--I must here point out here that there was a couple with their daughter sitting next to us (the tables at Portobello, while not Alfredos close, are fairly close together) and I was able to get a birds-eye look at the Filet Gorgonzola he'd ordered. It was as pretty a piece of Black Angus filet as I've seen in awhile and tho I didn't actually taste it, I think next time I might order that.
We both ordered the same dessert-Panna Cotta, with strawberrys. And this came with an added touch-a swirl of spearmint running thru the Panna Cotta. Never saw that before, but it was just enough to give it a special and interesting taste.
Our meal at Portobello made us forget completely the disappointment at not being able to get into Pucks. And seeing the place crowded and full was nice too!
Next up: California Grill. (But not today--both my fingers are tired).

Well done. Thanks for another interesting review. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Portobello Yacht Club last August.

Thorough review as always. Both fish dishes sound great.

How would you describe the pizza crust?

I'm glad your dinner turned out so well after all. :thumbsup2

I can't wait to hear your CG review.
So much so, that I would be willing to have you dictate it over the phone to me so that I can type it for you to get it out there!
We have followed your advice many times in the past... and you never steer us wrong!
Thanks!

I'm sure if the gentleman knew you were writting a review for the Dis with your celeb status and all he surely would have given you a bite!!

thanks for the review. i have always enjoyed Portabello in the past. my mom and i went last december, much to her liking. i really had no opinion on the choosing of the venue but she really wanted to go. it was a lovely dinner for our first night arrival. the "house" wine was a bit too sweet for me so i ordered a nice glass of pinot noir. we also split the margherita pizza and the farfalle pasta with chicken and asparagus. both were delightful. we were too full for dessert, especially after the bread and roasted garlic. yum!! i am craving the pasta again and we plan to eat there for lunch again in october. i'm glad you liked it too.

Thanks for another great review! I enjoy reading them and value your opinions. Looking forward to the CG one! :)

Your review reminds me of how much DH and I enjoy Portobellos. Thanks for the review! :)

DH and I have a special fondness for PYC. It was the first dinner we ate on our honeymoon at WDW. Our last meal there was 2003 and it was wonderful. We decided to go with the meal plan for our Oct trip, so we won't be doing PYC. It is the one DTD restaurant I really wish accepted the plan. We are trying Raglan Road though. DH is really into beer also!

Thanks Uncleromulus! We have enjoyed PYC several times (including last July) and I always get the rigatoni. I just love it!

I think more should try it when they are looking for Italian, rather than the usual in-park suspects. I guess that it would be much harder to get a table if they did though ;)

Enjoyed reading your review ~ Thanx for sharing.

BCV23-that crust was quite thin, somewhat crisp.

Sounds like a crust after my own heart. It has been many moons since we dined there. I should plan a return I guess. :thumbsup2 Thanks for the answer.

Thanks for another great review Uncleromulus. On our last visit to Portobello Yacht Club I was very dissapointed in my entree, it just was not very good. So I am glad to hear that maybe PYC has returned to it's outstanding former self. :)

Good luck with that...if you read my former posts all I do is rave about Portobello...I've been going there for the past 15 years!! We went last night...FYI--NEW CHEF...NEW MENU! I will review tomorrow in further detail...lets just say...I'm worried.
