Ok,IMHO there is no comparison and it is Chef Mickeys all the way unless:
You do not like characters
You want a good steak over choice for everybody
You want a break from sillyness and would like a serious meal

Thre is no place like it for the disney magic and your 5 year old should love it.
Sorry if I offend anyone, thats just what I would do, good luck choosing and may your trip be sprinkled with pixie dust,
Claire

thank you for your input.
i realize that chef mickeys is a character breakfast and concourse is not- i am asking for the food , not the entertainment.
i dont want to offend anyone either, just want to know where the food is better. we plan to go back to the resort to relax a bit and eat dinner before going back to the park for the christmas party.

In my opinion, they are both good in their own way and you have to decide what kind of food you want. Chef Mickey is a nice buffet, I think including Prime Rib,m with a fun and rollicking atmosphere. At the Concourse Steak House, you will find the type of menu that you find at your local "nice" steak restaurant. A more quiet relaxed meal. We think both have good food for what they are.

Without a doubt, go to Chef Mickey's. As far as buffet food goes, this restaurant is pretty good. Concourse Steakhouse is the worst dinner meal our family has ever eaten at WDW. The prime rib was tough, the rest of the food ordered was mediocre at best, and the service was just okay.

I would go with Chef Mickey's. The food is good and has a good variety for everyone. I think it would be a great in-between meal and it is a festive atmosphere.

Personally I'd keep riding that monorail until it stops at the polynesian, then I'd get off and walk a few feet to the Kona Cafe. Much, MUCH better food than the two places you mentioned, and a nicer atmosphere as well IMHO.

Or go a little further and have a MUCH better Character meal at 1900 Park fare or a wonderful casual but non-character meal at the GF cafe.
