Hi Everyone,

Its almost time for me to make my dining reservations & I am freaking out

Our first time (and possibly only time as we are coming from Australia)

We are a family of 4. Two adults a 12 year old girl & 10 year old boy

Please give me your suggestions for

Character meal? (note - we would have just come off a Disney Cruise so may be charactered out)
Dessert party?
Dining event? (eg Illuminations cruise)
Disney Springs for dinner?
Family restaurant suggestions at each park

There are no allergies or special requirements so anything goes!

thanking you all in advance. This group has been so helpful with my planning

Disney Hollywood - Kids would probably enjoy "The Sci-Fi" or "50's Prime Time Cafe" at Disney Hollywood Park (both are fun, unique places).
Magic Kingdom Park - "Skipper Canteen" or maybe "Liberty Tree Tavern".
Animal Kingdom - "Tusker House" or "Yak & Yeti". We have had good meals at both.
Epcot - Lots to choose from at Epcot. "Via Napoli" (pizza & pasta) We like the pizza. "Coral Reef" the atmosphere is great. They have a huge aquarium. You can watch the sharks & sea turtles as you eat your dinner. We find that the food is hit or miss at Coral Reef. We have had some really good meals there, and some very average meals as well. There is also "Biergarten". It is a German food buffet.
Disney Springs - Once again, lots of places to choose from. Thinking of the kids, they might enjoy "T-Rex". We have also eaten at "The Boathouse". "Homecomin'" is a place we want to try on our next visit.
You may want to get online and check out the menus at these places.
Dessert Party - We have only done the "Tomorrowland Dessert Party" at Magic Kingdom. We enjoyed it. The desserts really weren't anything special, but it was fun and we enjoyed our view of the fireworks.

For character meal I would suggest Tusker House at AK, 1900 PF dinner - the stepsisters are a riot, or Garden Grill at EP
If doing a dessert party, do either the before or after party in plaza garden for HEA so you can get best view of castle projections
Not sure about dining events - I haven't done that but there is a pirates cruise with Peter Pan I hear
At DS I would recommend Ragland Rd for the Irish dancing and food
AK - Yak & Yeti or Tusker House
DHS - Sci Fi or 50'sPT
EP - so many to choose from but Biergarten, Garden Grill, Rose & Crown, Teppen Edo, Via Napoli (altho I didn't like this one, most people rave about it
MK - BOG quick service lunch, CRT just because its cool to eat in castle, Plaza

Hope you have a wonderful time!

ETA: I cant believe I forgot this for a dining event - go to Hoop De Doo Revue - its a blast!

OK, first and foremost: breathe. Whatever you choose, you and your family will enjoy it. It's simply not possible to try everything at WDW, so don't sweat the stuff you don't try.

Some we've enjoyed over the years:
MK: Be Our Guest. We do the dinner and love it. As a PS, it's a rare place in that adults can enjoy a glass of wine with your dinner. You can meet the Beast on your way out.
Crystal Palace... we have breakfast here with Pooh and Friends. We get the earliest ADR we can, then enjoy an almost empty (well, by WDW standards) park

Epcot: So many choices! We love the Coral Reef, though it gets mixed reviews. One whole wall is an aquarium. We go every trip and haven't had a bad meal.
We also love Le Cellier in Canada, though it counts as 2 meals on the DDP.
This trip we're also trying Via Napoli and Tappan Edo, just to mix things up.

DHS: When the kids were young, we always did Sci Fi. The food is predictable-- burgers and stuff, though the shakes are great. But you're seated in a "car" watching corny Sci Fi clips. (NOTHING SCARY... Woody Woodpecker in Outer Space type stuff.

Epcot: We love Breakfast with the Characters at the Tusker House. We do a late breakfast there, and tend to make it more of a brunch as they change the buffet.

Resorts: We love Cape May (at the Beach Club, an easy 5 minute walk from International Gateway in Epcot. This trip, once again, we're choosing to eat there twice: Once for the Seafood buffet dinner. (MY kids hate seafood, but still love the buffet.) Also, on our last day, we're doing the Character Breakfast.

Chef Mickey's (At the Contemporary, a 3 minute walk from the Magic Kingdom, or you can take the monorail just for fun) is an absolute first night dinner for my family. It's loud and noisy but it's mandatory for us.

1900 Park Fare dinner (At the Grand Floridian, on the monorail from the MK) is a lot of fun. Cinderella and the prince dance, the stepsisters bicker about who is prettiest. Try the cold strawberry soup if they have it.

Consider the Hoop De Do Revu at Fort Wilderness. The show is so corny it's a riot, and the food is standard BBQ-- fried chicken, baked beans, and so on. Easy to get to via boat from MK.

Other: - The MK Dessert Party is off the list for my family, with my husband's diabetes it just wouldn't be fair to him. But we LOVED it in the past!!! In 2014 we got tickets for everyone attending our family reunion as a Christmas Gift, and it was a wonderful choice!!!

We did the Pirates and Pals fireworks cruise last trip, it was a gift and we enjoyed it.

Non food: make a real effort to catch the fireworks show at each of the parks. I LOVE Illuminations-- it's the closest to something that "Makes" the trip for me. My kids, on the other hand, need to see the show at the MK. And we all enjoy Fantasmic at DHS.

We enjoy Tusker at AK. Most characters and they spend a lot of time with the kiddos. We also go to Chef Mickey’s for breakfast, however our experience has been 20 minuets past our reservation time or more. For lunch quick service is best to save time. Dinner at Be Our Guest by far is our most enjoyable!

I love Ragland Road at Disney Springs. The Irish dancing is phenomenal, and you enjoy it while you eat a wonderful dinner.

At those ages---I agree with Ragland Road, it is a very fun atmosphere. Sci-Fi Diner in HS has been one of my favorites since I was those same ages as a kid. Character Meal---if you are looking for some of the non-standard characters, Ohana for breakfast (Lilo and Stitch and Mickey) We love Tusker House for breakfast as well. If you are only coming over once--you might want to consider Cinderella's Royal Table. It's expensive and for many it is a one and done---but you get to eat in Cinderella's Castle, and I think that is pretty special to do at least once. We have also had a great meal at the Boathouse too. We have also have a good time at Tratoria Al Forno on the Boardwalk for dinner--and like to walk around a bit with their evening entertainment afterwards too. Lots of people rave about their character breakfast too (Ariel and Eric and Rapunzel and Flynn)

I would do the ROL Tiffins package. The food at Tiffins is excellent. Yak and Yeti is also good.

I think the HEA dessert party can be worth it. I have not been for dinner but we enjoyed lunch at Skippers Canteen.

There are lots of options in Epcot.

Sanaa is excellent if you can make the trip to AKL.

MK: If you are looking for something less formal/fancy in Magic Kingdom, Pecos Bill's is great!
Epcot: Via Napoli (Italy pavilion) - love the thin crust wood-fired pizzas
DHS: 50s Primetime Cafe (pot roast; fried chicken) or Sci-Fi dine-in theatre (burgers, fries, shakes)
AK: Satuli Canteen (Unique menu, not the best for picky eaters)
DS: Raglan Road (irish fare)
Resort: Beaches and Cream at the Beach Club Villas is fun - check out the Kitchen Sink sundae!
This isn't a restaurant - but I highly recommend Karamell Kuche for dessert in Epcot (Germany pavilion)

AK: Loved the ROL package at Tiffins!! Had an amazing time; great food, great service and wonderful atmosphere. The ROL passes were great, we got there about 15min ahead of time and had plenty of room.

Special treat: Illuminations cruise. We did this for DD 16th B-day and loved it. It was pricey but so great. I would do this once the bridge is fixed at the Swan/Dolphin, it might be done now. That way you can head up that way too.

EP: Loved the Illuminations dessert party. Plenty of dessert options, great savory options and a good bar. There are really nice seats with a great view. Riding Frozen at the end was great!

MK: We loved Crystal Palace for a breakfast character meal. Love Pooh and friends. The breakfast is good and the character interactions were not rushed.

We absolutely love Hoop Dee Doo Review. That is a must for our family.

Our favorite restaurants are in the resorts - so we don't eat a lot of TS meals at the parks.

Resorts
AKL - A must for us is Sanaa and Boma. Sanaa is great if you get a table at the window - you can watch the animals while you eat.
Poly - Kona breakfast, Ohana dinner
CR - Wave breakfast or lunch or dinner
WL - Whispering Canyon Cafe
GF - 1900 Park Fare - enjoy breakfast or dinner. The dinner is fun with Cinderella's step mother and step sisters.

At MK - we like Liberty tree lunch or dinner (they are very different).
At AK - we really enjoyed the new QS place Satuli Canteen. For TS we really like Yak and Yeti.
At HS - a definite is Sci Fi. It is so different sitting in the cars and watching the movies.
At EPCOT - we have many - Garden Grill, Via Napoli, San Angel Inn, 9 Dragons, Rose and Crown.

As for a dessert party we absolutely loved Pirates and Pals Fireworks Dessert Voyage. We did not stop laughing at this party. Our captain on the boat was hysterical. So much fun and wonderful to be in the water when you watch the fireworks.

I hope this helps - enjoy!

Hi! We are also an Australian family, kiddos are 11 & 12 (both girls), we have been a few times so some of our dining will be repeats, and some new to us. We will be there over Christmas so I have made a few more TS bookings than usual so we don't miss out on a seat somewhere when we want out of the crowds. It's our second time going at Christmas too, though the last time was five years ago. My thinking this year with my planning has been... can I get this experience (or something similar enough to it) at home - or can I get it in the parks without it being a dining experience?

We have a longer stay so more ADRs, but I'll let you know what we're looking at doing and why so you can decide what's more important to you (ie, are you after better meals, or atmosphere/theming, the ability to enter a park early, or characters... )

Magic Kingdom -
Skipper Canteen: this is new to us, but the menu looks like it will work for our family and the Skipper humour is fun :D
BOG (Be Our Guest): We have done this before and while I wasn't actually totally wowed by it, this time we have a pre-park opening booking which means being able to wander through parts of the park before the crowds descend. We've done this with Crystal Palace in the past and it has always been special. These days Crystal Palace isn't a particularly useful PPO booking because the park is open up through mainstreet for everyone before opening now, which means walking to the restaurant is not the quiet, special (magical!) experience it once was. (Crystal Palace is still a fun place to get a meal though if you're into Winnie the Pooh, Tigger, Eeyore etc...). Back to BOG though - it's a restaurant you can book for, and you can even make your order ahead of time online, but you don't need to tip here as it's officially a Quick Service location.

This time around we are not doing Cinderella's Royal Table because we have done it before and while it was fun to dine in the castle, the girls are no longer into princesses and it's not a 'wow' meal for the price. You can also do this though as a pre-park opening meal which might add to its value for your family.

Hollywood Studios -
Sci-Fi Dine In Theatre: My kids have great memories of this and are super keen to do it again! The meals are generally burgers & fries fare, but I'm a fusspot lol and found something I enjoyed. Great fun to do at least once. (We have also done the 50s prime time before and while I remember it being good, I don't remember it as fondly as sci-fi and nor do the kids).

This year we are also doing Hollywood & Vine/Minnie's Seasonal/Fantasmic! package - not because we expect it to be amazing, but because it is something we haven't done, and the kids are likely to enjoy it. I probably wouldn't choose it first.

I've also booked Mama Melrose's this year, but haven't done that before. :D

Epcot:
This year we are doing Chefs de France (new to us), San Angel Inn (I have zero memories of the food lol, but LOVED the atmosphere! Not like anything we get in Australia), Tokyo Dining (this *is* like something we can get in Australia but we enjoy sushi - I wouldn't pick it first), Coral Reef (I remember a great big turtle hovering right beside us the last time we ate here! However - everything you see in this restaurant [in terms of the aquarium] you can see from outside the restaurant too, so you can still enjoy that aspect without eating here), and Garden Grill - rotating restaurant with Chip and Dale. We are doing this as a pre park opening too, with the hopes that we will be right there to jump on Soarin' (which can get long lines) when we are done! :D . We have done Via Napoli and I literally have almost zero memories of it lol. Epcot also has some good quick service places too though, so if you wanted to save some $$ you could still choose to eat Japanese/Chinese/Mexican/French etc etc, and still experience the atmosphere wandering around inside each of the countries. The big food court over by Garden Grill is also good with lots of healthy as well as delicious options. Hmm I'm not sure I've helped here but the point of my ramblings is that you can eat well here by eating Quick Service, and still experience everything Epcot has to offer. Love Epcot :D

Animal Kingdom:
We haven't done Rivers of Light before and so have decided to do a ROL package at Tusker House. We have done breakfast at Tusker House before and the kids enjoyed that... we could choose from Tiffins or Tusker for the ROL package and while the food at Tiffins is more up my alley, ultimately I decided that for the money, I can eat at places in Australia that have meals comparible to Tiffins, but I can't recreate Tusker. So Tusker it is :D I have booked Yak & Yeti too as I remember the biggest, most amazing Tuna Salad here, though I don't recall anything terribly memorable about the restaurant itself. If we decide to cancel this booking later, it won't be a massive loss. Except for where that salad is concerned ha ha.

Everywhere else:
We have eaten at California Grill twice - once was great, once was so-so, but both times the view of the fireworks from up here was pretty special and so we have booked to do it again. I tend to book it on a Christmas or Halloween party night if dates are right so we can see the fireworks we won't see since I don't tend to spend the extra going to parties (kids used to be too young, and now that they are older I know they'd much prefer the Halloween party to the Christmas Party. They are all about trick or treating... ie the lollies).
Dessert Party - We have done this twice, it's a nice view of the fireworks but at this year's prices I know it's not worth it for us. We have other plans for fireworks views. However for the times we have done it, it has been memorable and worthwhile. Kids would both like to do it again but I can't make it work with my plans anyway lol.
'Ohana: we have eaten here twice, once at a table that had a view of the fireworks at the right time (awesome experience!) and once not (but we were able to get up and see them if I recall). I remember it being crazy busy last time but for some reason, am looking forward to doing it again lol.
T-Rex and Rainforest Cafe: these are so unlike anything we can do in Australia and my kids are dying to do both again. Check out videos and see what you think. If I had to pick just one, I'd go for Rainforest. Fun shop to check out before and after too. If going to T-Rex, request not to be in the ice-room - full of bright changing colours, I found that super hard on my eyes!
V&A: We did Victoria & Albert's one year - very special, but we did it sans kids. Tossing up whether to do it again but not convinced (I see the menu doesn't actually change *that* much year to year and we'd have to take kids this time and I don't know that they'd appreciate it like I would. Don't even know the hubby would appreciate it like I would lol!)
I have booked something at the Grand Floridian Cafe this year, but that is mostly to make sure we have a reason to visit the GF and check out the holiday decorations. (We have eaten there before and it was good, but not super different to a meal we could get in Aus). Actually, thinking about it, I've booked a 1900 Park Fare breakfast there this year too, as I try and work out what we should do for Christmas Day.
The boathouse: enjoyed this, but not totally different to something we'd get in Australia - except for those Aquacars! Def. tempted to do those this time. But you don't eat in those lol.
Earl of Sandwich is something easy & yum do as QS during the holiday period - Turkey & cranberry sandwiches etc. A few years back we signed up to their loyalty progam and all ate free :D

In terms of your planning - you are coming a long way, so if I were you I would make any reservations you think you might want, then research them to death (everyone over-researches, right??). It *is* possible to pick up desirable ADRs after the 180-day mark (particularly around the 45-day mark, when people cancel trips) but if you are visiting in a busy time, it's less stressful to have a reservation or two you might cancel later, than be trying to chase a reservation you didn't initially make kwim.

Your kids are such a great age for Hoop dee doo revue!! That gets my vote!

Another fun thing to do over in DS is to make your own treat at Goofy candy company. I usually do the pretzel rods and rice Krispy treat but they also do marshmallows and apples. You chose what kind of chocolate to dip them in, what topping you want and another chocolate drizzle. It's fun and yummy!

You are all amazing!!! Thank you so much for taking the time to give such great suggestions. I will look up all these places. Didn’t think of raglan road but now I’m looking forward to checking it out. I wish I was staying longer to try them all!

Character meal? 1900 Park Fare Dinner, the character interaction is spectacular! ‘Ohana Breakfast is also great
Dessert party? Eh. No.
Dining event? (eg Illuminations cruise) I would venture to say that Calirnia Grill is a dining event. It has the best view at WDW and wonderful food. Dinner and fireworks!
Disney Springs for dinner? I am very excited to try Homecomin’ this trip, and you may enjoy trying some regional Southern US foods. Grits! Biscuits and gravy! Deviled eggs! Mmmm...
Family restaurant suggestions at each park
DHS: Sci-Fi is super fun and unique
MK: I enjoy the counter service options more than the table service here: BOG lunch, Pecos Bill
Epcot: La Hacienda, Biergarten, Tokyo Dining are our favorites
AK: I’ve never had TS here but Flame Tree BBQ is terrific
