Dining Reviews Sep 2008 & Feb 2009 Update 8/13 - Complete!

How do you look up the EXIF?

I'd love a P&S that could do bokeh - it made those CR pictures beautiful.

You need to have a program that can read the data. There are a bunch of freeshare programs out there. Do a search for EXIF reader and you can down load the software.

It's great because you can see the dates and times that the photo was taken. You can usually also see the camera and settings used.
It's tied to the camera and not memory card.

I'm glad you like those pictures so much, but like I said, that was done in editing, and not on the camera.

How exactly do you do this in editing? WHich program do you use? What are the steps. This is all very very interesting to me as I have so many pictures I'd love to do that for but my point and shoot doesn't have the capability. I was thinking of a new camera but if it can be done in editing my problem is solved.

I was going to ask the same thing. I have Paint Shop Pro and Photoshop. I haven't been able to produce bokeh like that in the photos.

I would love to be able to do that and not have to lug my dSLR and multiple lenses all over WDW.

I have to look into a Powershot, because it seems to be a GREAT camera. In addition to the bokeh, the clarity is that of a dSLR (at least in some photos). The sensors in a p&s are much smaller than a dSLR so the picture quality usually lacks.

Nice work disneyfav!! :thumbsup2 You really should visit the photography board, we'd love to have you.

I use Photobucket. All you have to do is hit the edit button, then in effects there's one that's for blurring edges. It's not hard to do at all.

Blurring the edges is different from bokeh. Bokeh is a blurred background.

This is one example of bokeh. See how the background is blurred? There are different levels of bokeh, but as you can see it is different from just a blurred edge.

I just tried it using photoshop and it didn't work the same way at all. I must be doing something wrong. It was just the very edge that blurred, even when I sharped or softened the edge it didn't matter. Oh well, back to camera shopping....esp if photoshop and paint pro doesn't do it any better.

Maybe I'll post some of my food pics over there. The good ones anyway, like the CA Grill ones. But I haven't edited all the pics yet, as I'm editing them as I need them for my reviews.

I obviously don't know all the professional stuff, but that sounds like kind of the same thing. I've always been happy enough with the way my pictures turn out to not worry about all that technical stuff. It all seems a little confusing.

Love the photos from CP.. I am glad to hear that the salmon is good I think I skipped it last time I ate lunch there thinking it might not be good. Might have to book a return to CP for lunch!!!

If you have other photos too, you should post them. They also have a weekly contest. There are all different levels over there, from beginner to pro.

I see what you mean now. That's a very pretty photo, it looks like it belongs in a cookbook or something.

That's not my photo, but I wanted to show the difference between blurred edges from Photobucket and bokeh and the CG pics.

You have to try the salmon. I almost didn't try it, thinking the same thing, but since the server recommended it, I did, and I am so glad I listened to his recommendation.

I think I may have entered the weekly contest once awhile ago with an Ariel pic I have. I think it may have been a Valentine's contest.

I love the CP review! I am not a very adventurous eater but I'm looking to broaden my culinary experienced this trip, being on the DxDDP and all. How is salmon? Is it very "fishy"? I have already decided to try the Mahi Mahi at Coral Reef, but might try the salmon too!

I don't think salmon is all that mild, and it's probably one of the fishier fishes, but it was such a great balance of flavors between the chile-rub, and sauce that was on it. I need to see if I can find the recipe for that fish, it was so good. There are actually a few recipes I'm going to have to go looking for.

After a long, very tiring, but very fullfilling day at the Magic Kingdom I was exhausted, and ready to crash, but I felt like I had to go to dinner, since it was already included, and I didn't want to not be able to say that I ate at all the signature restaurants in one trip.

I arrived at the Wilderness Lodge at 8:30 for my 9:05 ADR. After a quick change in the bathroom, (there was no way I was going to wear the same sweaty t-shirt I'd worn all day in the parks to a nice restaurant,) I checked-in. I was told that I probably wouldn't be seated until close to my ADR time, so they gave me a pager, and I headed to the lounge to make myself comfortable as I waited for my table.

At 9:00 I walked back up to the check-in desk, where the girl apologized for the long wait. I told her it was no problem, after all, I had been there very early, and it still wasn't my ADR time yet. At 9:10 I was finally seated, at a four top, which I felt was unnecessary, but I suppose they were out of two-tops, and didn't want to make me wait any longer for my table.

I sat on the booth side of the table, which was a bad idea, because the whole meal I kept on just wanting to lay down and take a nap on the booth. That seemed a more enticing idea at the time then sitting through a three-course meal, but like I said, I wouldn't let myself skip dinner. (This would happen a few times throughout my trip, where it would've been a better idea to skip the meal then force myself to go, but I always went.)

My server this evening was Paul, and he explained to me what I was entitled to on the deluxe plan, an appetizer, entree, and dessert. I asked him if I could have the cheese plate as my appetizer, since it's kind of seperated from everything else on the menu, and he said of course I could.

Before being served my cheese plate I was served some nice sourdough bread. Like I said in my California Grill review, I'm not a huge fan of sourdough, but this one was nice as well, and I do like the butter at Artist Point, though I'm not sure what it is exactly that makes it so great.

I was then served my cheese plate, which had three different kinds of cheeses on it, Fiscalini cheddar, Midnight Moon, which is a type of goat cheese, and Echo Mountain blue cheese. Also on the plate were raisins, a fig cake, walnut toast, and tomato-onion marmalade.

334.jpg

I started with the Midnight Moon. Usually when I have goat cheese it's creamy, but the texture of this cheese was almost more like that of cheddar. I thought this was a very nice cheese, and I really liked it with the walnut toast and the tomato-onion marmalade, which had a delicate sweet flavor. The blue cheese, which I've had before in one of their salads, is a very good, but not overly pungent blue cheese, though I usually prefer the more creamier blues. This was very nice with the fig cake, though I thought the fig cake had a slightly odd aftertaste. The last cheese, the Fiscalini cheddar, was my favorite, but that's no suprise as I love cheddar cheese, and this was a lovely sharp one, that I pretty much ate a la carte without bothering with the accompiaments.

For my entree, despite the fact that I had a lot of salmon at lunch, I ordered the cedar plank-roasted Pacific wild king salmon.

336.jpg

This was a lovely piece of salmon, and was cooked perfectly. Remember how I said in my California Grill review that I found a few things to be overly salted? This was another one. The outside was generously coated with salt and pepper, a little too much in my opinion, but it was still good. With the salmon came pear and smoked belly hash, which I actually thought was more interesting then the fish itself, though I did find that to be a little dry, though with the pear-ginger sauce, which was a wonderful, slightly sweet sauce, I thought it all worked out in the end to be a quite nice dish, though I prefer the buffalo steak I'd had the last time I had eaten here.

By the time I had finished my salmon I was almost completely falling asleep, and I couldn't imagine eating anything else, even though I knew I'd be getting dessert. I also didn't know how I was going to make it back to Pop, since I was barely even keeping myself sitting up straight at that point. Luckily this is the only day I felt so tired that I thought I might fall asleep at the table.

For dessert, which I really didn't even want, but ordered anyway, I had the berry cobbler.

340.jpg

This was a small piece of cobbler, as well as a scoop of black raspberry ice cream, surronded by raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, and blueberries. I thought the cobbler part was kind of dry and too crumbly, but the ice cream and berries were actually very refreshing, and I managed to eat quite a bit.

There seemed to be some trouble with the tip here. I had given Paul my credit card to charge the tip, which I had rounded to the nearest dollar, but when he ran in through, it charged a penny less, so it went through as $12.99 instead of the $13 I had wanted to charge. He said it was really weird and he had never seen that before, and I agreed that it was weird as well. Obviously that penny wasn't a big deal, but I just wanted to share that.

Overall I really do like Artist Point, but after a few trips there I have pretty much tried everything of interest to me on their menu. So while I'd return, it wouldn't be my first choice just based on that.

DisneyFav,

We are considering Artist Point for our December trip. Did you have a chance to try any of the wines? Any recommendations?

Enjoying your reviews!!

No, sorry. I had a drink in the lounge before dinner, and I tried to limit myself to one drink a night while I was down there. I think the only times I had wine, instead of a cocktail, were when I had some dessert wines a couple of nights with dessert. That was at Yachtsman Steakhouse, where I had Rosa Regale, and Flying Fish, where I had an ice wine flight.

I do still have the menu though, and if you like I can post the recommended wines that go with the entrees. I don't have the full wine menu though.

Thanks!

I am not really a wine drinker - my husband is; I had just heard good things about the wine list at both AP and CG. I prefer mixed drinks myself :goodvibes

We currently have reservations for Narcoosees as our one "nicer" sit down dinner (we are in a 2br at SSR, so will have a kitchen for many meals). I am just wondering if I made the right call.

Can you give us a hint as to which restaurant was your favorite since it looks like you ate at all of the nicer places? :worship:

Thanks for any help!!

Overall, for this trip, my favorite of the signature restaurants was probably Citricos or Yachtsman Steakhouse. If I had to put them in order, in would probably go;

Yachtsman Steakhouse
Citricos
California Grill
Narcoossees
Jiko
Flying Fish
Artist Point

That's just for this trip though, any other trip Jiko would've been at the bottom of the list, and Citricos would've been lower.

Thanks again. We've actually eaten at Yachtmans before (and really enjoyed it), so I was looking for something different. But, maybe I should see if I could switch it? A night at the YC/BC/BW area is always nice.

Decisions!!

Keep up the reviews! They are great!!

Another round of great updates! I'm drooling!!

This was the first time I ate at Yachtsman, and I am so happy I finally ate there. I had no idea what I was missing.

I would say if you've already eaten there, go somewhere else. I think all the signature restaurants are great, and you won't be dissapointed at Narcoossees. The meal I had there was great. I don't want to give too much away about it before I write the actual review, but it's definatly worth going there at least once.
